Immunoglobulins and complement in human periodontitis.

The gingiva in human periodontitis shows IgG, IgM, and C3 suggesting an antigen-antibody response binding and activating complement. The irregular distribution of the fluorescence on the basement membrane suggests binding of antigen-antibody complexes.

Diurnal variation in epithelial cell population kinetics of young mouse tongue.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a diurnal variation in the DNA synthesis pattern of epithelial basal cells in the dorsum of the mouse tongue between infancy and preadult ages. The pattern of DNA synthesis in the basal cells of mouse tongue in 24-hour periods for different age groups was studied by isotope labeling and radioautography. A strong diurnal variation was found in the pattern of DNA synthesis with the degree of variation dependent on the age of the experimental groups.

Mandibular histiocytosis X and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The occurrence together of two major distinct diseases in the oral area is relatively rare. In this report, a case is presented in which histiocytosis X was found to develop in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The nature of the differentiated histiocytoses is explored, and the possibility of the relationship between a lymphoproliferative and a histiocytic disease entity is investigated.

Colonic motility diagnosis based on colonic pressure.

Manometry of the alimentary tract is a valuable and widely used means to evaluate and diagnose the function of the alimentary tract. However, the measurement can be inconvenient due to the invasive method used, and the many factors affecting results. Research on colonic pressure data is even more insufficient. This paper deals with colonic pressure data via an improved method ensuring that pressure data of the whole colon is available. The data is analysed based on the learning vector quantization (LVQ) method. Testing results show that this method distinguishes the normal data and the abnormal data, consistently with the original diagnoses. This method can serve as an assistant diagnosis of colonic motility and contributes to further research on colonic motility based on pressure data.

Why teeth associated with inflammatory periapical lesions can have a vital response.

It is a general conception that teeth having an inflammatory periapical lesion are nonvital and the associated periapical lesions are not innervated. However, structurally intact and functioning nerve fibers have been shown to be present in the periapical lesion and/or the associated pulp. Therefore, when a patient presents with an endodontically involved tooth associated with a periapical lesion and experiences pain during canal instrumentation, the need for local anesthesia is apparent.

A retrospective study of oral and maxillofacial biopsy lesions in a pediatric population from southern Taiwan.

This is a retrospective study of biopsied oral lesions (N = 534) in a pediatric population (0-15 years old) in southern Taiwan. In this study, we included 6% of the 9672 biopsies performed from 1985 through 1996. The lesions were divided into three groups according to patients' ages, 0-5 years old; 6-10 years old; and 11-15 years old The majority of the samples were from the oldest age group (273/518). With the exclusion of normal tissues (N = 26), 518 samples were classified into four categories: inflammatory lesions, cystic lesions, tumor or tumor-like lesions, and other lesions. The largest number of lesions occurred in the inflammatory lesion group (46%). The 12 most frequently occurring lesions contributed about 78% of all the biopsies in the three age groups (0-15 years old). Frequencies of the lesions of mucous extravasation phenomenon, dentigerous cyst, fibrous dysplasia, and odontonia in our three pediatric age groups showed a significant proportion in the biopsies of the same lesions in the group of patients of all ages. These information may be valuable for both epidemiology and teaching.
