Cost containment and the link to quality.
This article provides a practical perspective on cost containment as it relates to physicians, nurses and hospitals. The success of any cost containment program depends on commitment of all the players to an accountable quality program. Case studies based on real life situations and dilemmas have been chosen to accentuate the importance of timing involved in deciding when to consult physician advisor assistance. The final portion of this article addresses the process of peer review as a component of successful cost containment. In this section the peer review process and the effects changing legislation has had on it are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the accountability loop within this process.
