Electrocerebral changes in acute alpha-chloralose poisoning: a case report.

A patient who had swallowed a high dose of alpha-chloralose (AC) exhibited a severe CNS depression, myoclonic convulsions and a flat EEG tracing. An episode of respiratory depression occurred also during hospitalization. The cerebral electrical activity reappeared after 18 hrs., EEG and clinical pictures subsequently showing a rapid improvement. Chemical tests revealed the presence of 0.3 mg/100 ml of trichloroethanol in the blood. Treatment included the administration of diazepam against convulsions and assisted respiration. This case confirms previous clinical and experimental observations, proving that AC should be regarded as a convulsant in addition to being an anesthetic agent.

The interaction between alcohol, chlorpropamide and phenformin in a severe combined poisoning: case report.

A young non-diabetic woman ingested 2.5-3.7 g of chlorpropamide and 0.6-0.9 g of phenformin together with a large dose of alcohol, nitrofurantoin and promethazine in a suicidal attempt. She developed severe metabolic acidosis, hypokalemia, polyuria and prolonged hypoglycemia in the absence of typical hypoglycemic symptoms. These unusual clinical features were in part explained on the basis of the interactions between alcohol and the other drugs.

The effect of oxine-5-sulphonic acid on the hepatic drug metabolism in the rat.

Oxine-5-sulphonic acid inhibits the metabolism of aminopyrine in the rat liver in vitro. The characteristics of this inhibition vary according to whether the oxidative N-demethylation of the substrate is determined by the formation of the metabolite 4-aminoantipyrine or by the production of formaldehyde.
