On the role of serotonin in aggressive behaviour of ants Genus formica.

The object of our study was the investigation of the effects of aggressiveness on brain 5-HT concentration in ants genus Formica. The brain concentrations of 5-HT in ants is relatively high. The results indicate that both isolation, interspecies aggressiveness and intraspecies aggressiveness were accompanied by the increased brain serotonin.

The role of serotoninergic neurons in rats agressive behaviour.

Lesions of the dorsal and medial raphe nuclei that caused a marked decrease of the 5-HT level in the forebrain induced in groupped rats intraspecies aggressiveness but failed to increase mouse-killing behaviour. In rats isolated for 3 weeks lesions of the raphe nuclei did not change behaviour of "killers" and natural "non-killers". The role of 5-HT in mechanism of the aggressive behaviour is discussed.

Patterns of endocrine reactivity in patients with recent myocardial infarction. Clinical and biochemical correlations: trial of endocrine therapy.

The following endocrine function parameters were studied serially in a group of 10 patients with recent myocardial infarction: blood and urinary levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine, urinary excretion of vanillyl-mandelic acid; protein-bound iodine, Hamolsky test (Hamolsky, Stein, and Freedberg, 1957); blood insulin; 24-hour urinary excretion of 17-hydroxycorticoids, sodium, and potassium. The acute phase of myocardial infarction, especially in those patients with a severe clinical course (rhythm disturbances, coronary insufficiency, circulatory failure), was associated with disturbed endocrine reactivity. The most frequent and the earliest feature was the increased level of the 24-hour urinary excretion of epinephrine, combined with a pronounced decrease in blood insulin level. Later in the course of the disease, as the adrenergic reactivity returned to normal, there was an increase in blood insulin to normal levels. In 3 patients with severe clinical symptoms of acute myocardial infarction, there were, in addition to the increased 24-hour urinary excretion of catecholamines, a decreased blood insulin, higher than normal levels of protein-bound iodine, and of the Hamolsky test. One of these patients developed hypoadrenia. It is possible that the abnormal endocrine reactions accelerate the catabolic processes within cardiac tissue (catecholamines, thyroid hormones), especially when there is a possible functional deficiency of hormones, occurring as a general adaptation reaction to stress (cortisol, insulin). The disturbances that follow may be dangerous for the patient.

[Neurofibroma and meningioma of the spinal canal].

The authors described a 22-year-old female patient in whom a neurofibroma had been removed at the age of 13 years (laminectomy L1, 2, 3), and 9 years later psammoma was removed by laminectomy Th7, 8, 9). Both tumours developed outside the cord and were removed radically. The patient without complaints and without neurological deficit returned to work.

[Meningeal cyst of the sacral canal with coexistent hernia of the nucleus pulposus L4-L5].

The authors describe a female patient aged 46 years in whom a meningeal hernia developed in the sacral canal, probably after trauma in childhood but produced no neurological changes. After 40 years hernia of the nucleus pulposus developed at the L4-L5 level causing right-sided ischalgia and strong pains. After surgical treatment pains disappeared.

[Meningocele in the cervical segment of the spine associated with vertebral fusion].

The authors describe a patient aged 22 years in whom a developmental anomaly was found with fusion of the vertebral bodies C4 through C6, posterior spina bifida from C5 through Th1 and meningocele at the level C4 through C7. The meningocele was removed surgically. The case illustrates an integral connection between this set of anomalies and the malformations from the group of dysraphism.
