Since the advent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) numerous M. avium intracellulare disseminated infections have been recognised. Blood culture is a convenient method for diagnosing these infections. At Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital AIDS patients with persistent unexplained fever each had three blood cultures. The blood samples, taken on 3 consecutive days without taking in account fever peaks, were collected in the Isolator-10 lysis-centrifugation system and inoculated onto Löwenstein-Jensen medium with and without 0.25% sodium pyruvate. From February 1986-September 1987, 564 samples taken from 165 patients were cultivated for the detection of mycobacteria. Sixty one (10.8%) taken from 19 patients (11.5%) were positive. M. avium intracellulare was the most frequently isolated mycobacterial species. In 10 patients, the positive blood culture was the only or the first positive culture for mycobacteria.
Ansamycin LM 427 (or rifabutine) is a spiropiperidyl-rifamycin which has been proposed as a treatment for tuberculosis and mycobacterial infections resistant to rifampicin. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MCI) of rifabutine and of rifampicin for 10 strains of M. tuberculosis sensitive to rifampicin, 15 strains of M. tuberculosis resistant to rifampicin, 10 strains of M. xenopi and 15 of M. avium-intracellulare have been measured in a comparative fashion on gel DIFCO 7H11 medium and also on a Loewenstein-Jensen medium. The MCI of rifampicin and of rifabutine inhibiting 90% of the strains (MCI 90) of M. tuberculosis sensitive to rifampicin have been 0.06 mg/l on 7H11 media and 1 mg/l on Loewenstein-Jensen media respectively. For strains of M. tuberculosis resistant to rifampicin they were respectively 256 and 8 mg/l on 7H11 and of 1024 and 128 Loewenstein-Jensen, for the strains of M. xenopi they were 8 and 0.5 on 7H11 and 64 and 4 mg/l on Loewenstein-Jensen respectively, and finally for strains of M. avium-intracellulare they were 64 and 2 mg on 7H11 and 256 and 16 on Loewenstein-Jensen media. With rare exceptions for proven mycobacterial infections there was a link of the order of 20:1 between the values for CMI of rifampicin and rifabutine measured on Loewenstein-Jensen medium and on 7H11; the MCIs were ten times more elevated on the first than on the second and the liaison between the MCI of rifampicin and the MCI of rifabutine tended to show that these two antibiotics have the same mode of action.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Cefadroxil and cefalexine were characterized by thermal and spectral analysis. A vibrational study by infrared and Raman spectroscopies was made to connect the structural data with the antibacterial activity.

We have shown by several physicochemical methods that the existence of different crystal habits for a given molecule does not necessarily imply polymorphism. For sulfamethazine, we found one polymorph, form 1, whose crystalline structure is published herein, and a methanol solvate.

While visually fixating on a central, coloured object, thirty-six infants aged between two and five months were presented with a peripheral target to the right or to the left of midline. Both objects were presented at two distances: either 30 or 90 cm from the infant. The extent of the effective visual field was measured by the presence and the latency of saccadic shifts of gaze from the fixation object toward the target object placed at varying degrees of eccentricity. The effective visual field expanded between two and four months. Near peripheral targets were detected at greater angles of eccentricity than those more distant, but this effect was modified both by age and by the distance of central fixation. For two- and three-month infants the effective visual field was most reduced when the central fixation object was placed at 30 cm and the target object at 90 cm. The ability to respond to peripheral objects more distant than the fixation object develops after three months.
