A variant chromosome no. 21 consisting of two stalks and two satellites in tandem was detected during a survey of a human isolate. The variant segregated in three generations of a large kindred. One male had the variant no. 21, a metacentric Y, and a 47,XXY complement; however, no other evidence of chromosomal nondisjunction was found. Computer-aided analysis of sequentially stained variant no. 21 chromosomes indicated that silver-stained material corresponded to the proximal stalk region (as defined by Giemsa), but often covered both the distal stalk and satellite (also as defined by Giemsa). These data support the hypothesis that human nucleolar organizers are localized to the stalks of acrocentric chromosomes.
The financial burden of cancer treatment is a major source of anxiety for the families of pediatric cancer patients. Parents of these patients report that nonmedical, out-of-pocket expenditures are the most troublesome because, unlike medical bills, nonmedical costs must be paid immediately and are rarely reimbursed. Data on nonmedical expenditures (transportation, food, lodging, clothing, family care, and miscellaneous) were collected from 70 patients' families for one-week periods at three-month intervals. Multiple regression analysis was carried out to ascertain the factors influencing costs. Factors contributing to nonmedical costs included level of care, the patient's Performance Status, distance from the treatment center, and family size. Thirty-two families reported loss of pay when one or both parents accompanied the child to the hospital. When this loss was combined with the nonmedical costs, the results indicated a serious strain on the family budget. For half the families surveyed, the total expenses plus loss of pay amounted to more than 25% of the weekly family income.
Ten latex-fixation kits (both slide and tube) were evaluated by use of a reference serum containing 250 IU of rheumatoid factor (Communicable Disease Center). All tests were performed with serial dilution of serum; adjacent tubes differed by a factor of 0.10 log10. Geometric titers, means, standard deviations, and variance analysis were used to evaluate commercial kits. Three levels of variance were applied: (1) 0.18 or less for intralaboratory variation when the same serum is tested with the same kit; (2) 0.18-0.35 when various lots or batches of the same serum were used; (3) 1.0 or less when various commercial kits were tested with the same serum. The sensitivity of each commercial kit was determined by assigning to it a value (the minimum detectable unit) arrived at by dividing the number of units in the standard by the titer obtained. The technic presented could be applicable to other serologic tests, and thus provide a general method for their standardization and quality control.

The effect of marijuana on the free recall of nonverbal memory was evaluated by presenting 22 male volunteers with line drawings of geometric figures for ten acquisition trials. Each subject served as his own drug control. The study was performed over two sessions with drug condition and list of stimulus materials counterbalanced. Recall varied with drug condition and scores obtained on the Embedded Figures Test. Marijuana reduced recall mainly in those subjects making two or more errors on the Embedded Figures Test, but had little effect on subjects making one or no errors. Intrusion errors were also elevated following marijuana intoxication, but this effect was unrelated to embedded-figures performance . These results are discussed with reference to degree of field dependence and cognitive style.

An early childhood language analysis and intervention program, based on two models of pragmatics, is described. The theoretical constructs of each pragmatics model are described first, followed by a discussion of how the clinicians in the program translate these constructs into procedures for the analysis of and intervention with language disorders in preschool-aged children. Mention is made in conclusion of the limitations within which the program operates.

Cells of embryos carrying a lethal nucleolar mutation have been maintained in vitro for extended periods of time. Normally these mutants live only 9 to 12 days after fertilization but their cells in culture will survive for more than 3 months. The extent of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis was determined in primary cultures prepared from normal embryos and nucleolar mutants having different numbers of ribosomal RNA genes. We found that the accumulation of radioactivity into rRNA for normal and mutant embryos was similar in vivo and in vitro. In primary cultures of normal embryos which have two nucleoli per cell and mutant embryos which have only one nucleolus per cell, the incorporation of radioactivity into rRNA was similar even though the normal cells have twice as many rRNA genes. Thus the mechanism which regulates dosage compensation of the rRNA genes operates both in vivo and in vitro.
34 experienced marijuana users were divided into four equated groups of eight subjects each based on recognition memory test performance. One week later each group was retested following administration of marijuana containing 0, 5, 10 or 15 mg delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol. A dose-related effect of marijuana on pulse rate and subjective measures of potency and pleasantness occurred. Ratings of potency and changes in pulse rate were highly correlated, but this relationship did not hold within a given dosage group as determined by partial correlations. No effect of marijuana on the distribution of hit and false alarm rates or confidence ratings during the recognition memory test was noted.
