Interdisciplinary treatment of the malignant lymphoma of the thyroid.

720 patients with malignant tumor of the thyroid were treated at our department between 1950 and 1996. Histological examination revealed 15 cases (2%) of malignant lymphoma (14 female, 1 male mean age: 69.8 year). In 8 cases Hashimoto thyroiditis, in 1 case chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis was verified beyond the lymphoma. According to Ann Arbor staging, 9 patients were stage I E, 3 II E, 1 III E, and 2 IV E. Radical surgical treatment was performed in 7, palliative in also 7, and only biopsy in one case. Irradiation was administered in 9, chemotherapy in 8 patients. In 5 out of the 7 palliative operated patients tracheostomy was performed. 10 patients were lost. The therapy of the non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the thyroid is debated in the literature. There are some authors, who question the role of surgery. Our experience, based on the longer survival of the patients, who underwent radical operation, support those, who consider the possible surgical treatment as the initial part of the multimodal therapy.

Elemental concentrations in human erythrocytes and blood plasma following radiotherapeutic irradiation.

Elemental concentrations in whole blood samples from irradiated mice were found [1] to change uncorrelated with the depression of red blood cell count. The aim of the present work was to clear up whether or not similar effects appear in the case of human radiotherapeutic irradiations. Concentration ratios were taken for erythrocyte and plasma fractions with the proton induced X-ray emission method for the elements P, K, Ca, Fe, Zn in the case of patients undergoing postoperative gamma irradiation following mastectomy. None of the concentration ratios were found to be influenced under the present conditions of irradiation.

[Results of radiation therapy of cancer of the lip (author's transl)].

The authors are presenting the 5-year survival rates of 170 patients treated for carcinoma of the lip at the radiological department of the Medical University in Debrecen. The results of radiation therapy, clarified and stage-correlated, are as follows: T1 100%, T2 90.2%, T3 67.9%. They call attention to the fact that in planning and carrying out the schedule of radiation treatment its effectiveness is stage-dependent. In radiation treatment applied in conformity with this, the basic laws of radiation therapy have to be observed. In the treatment of Stages T1 the optimal added-up radiation effectiveness lies at 2000 to 2500 reu with Chaoul tubes 1 and 2, for Stages T2 at 2300 to 2600 reu with Chaoul tubes 3 and 4, for Stages T3 at 2500 to 2600 reu with Chaoul tubes 3, 6 or 10 and additional telecobalt irradiation of the corresponding lymphatic chains.

[Urographic evaluation of Vx2 kidney carcinoma and control implantation in rabbits].

The development of Vx2 carcinoma induced in the kidney of rabbits was followed by urography. First the X-ray anatomy of the renal pelvis in the rabbit is described, pointing out the differences against the human pattern. Urography is easy to carry out and to evaluate, and it revealed some sign of the turnover in 75,6% of the cases in the third week and in 100% after 21 days. The radiological symptoms are described and classified. These symptoms are not specific but call attention to the progress of carcinoma.

[Experimental methods of creating V X 2 bone tumour in rabbits (author's transl)].

V X 2-carcinomas were induced in rabbit femurs by various methods. Inoculation near the periosteum after injury of the condylus medialis femoris was considered most successful. Results of 124 inoculations and 10 controls are demonstrated by angiograms, pharmakoangiograms and histologic photographs. Injury of periosteum and bone favors the taking and spreading of malignant growth.
