The early follow-up of 131I-treatment of thyrotoxicosis.

No general agreement exists concerning the optimal time for the first control of patients treated with 131I for thyrotoxicosis. Ten consecutive cases were followed clinically, and current laboratory thyroid tests were frequntly performed during a 14 week period to point out the optimal control time and the best setup of control parameters for such patients. It is concluded that clinical examination, supplied with T4, T3, T3-test, and TSH determinations 12--14 weeks after therapy seems rational as a first step in the lifelong follow-up of these patients.

Acetylsalicylic acid-induced gastrointestinal bleeding determined by a 51Cr method on a day-to-day basis.

The daily gastrointestinal blood loss caused by plain and microencapsulated acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) tablets was compared. Fourteen healthy, male volunteers participated in a double-blind, cross-over study, lasting 38 days. Before drug administration a median gastrointestinal bleeding of 0.9 ml/24 h was observed. During oral intake of 1.5 g ASA twice a day for 5 days, an increased faecal blood loss was seen in all volunteers. The increase was significant for both plain and microencapsulated ASA (p less than 0.01). Plain ASA tablets, however, caused a greater faecal blood loss than the microencapsulated tablets (p = 0.05), maximum median levels being 6.2 ml/24 h and 3.9 ml/24 h, respectively. An optimal design of radiochromium studies for determination of drug-induced gastrointestinal blood loss is discussed.

Mixed bullous disease with labile erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

A woman, aged 66, fulfilled all the usual criteria of dermatitis herpetiformis. Subsequently, she developed circulating IgA and IgM basement membrane zone antibodies, a labile erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and the clinical picture changed to one of bullous pemphigoid. Her labile ESR was obviously caused by a factor related to the erythrocytes. Direct Coombs test was positive.

Phosphatidic acid biosynthesis in rat liver mitochondria and microsomal fractions. Regulation of fatty acid positional specificity.

The positional and fatty acid specificity of phosphatidic acid biosynthesis in rat liver mitochondria and microsomal fractions was studied by using acylcarnitines, CoA and an excess of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.21) as the source of acyl-CoA. In the mitochondria, the preference for palmitic acid at the 1-position is increased at high acyl-CoA concentrations, whereas it is decreased in the microsomal fraction. There was no change in the fatty acid specificity at the 2-position with different acyl-CoA concentrations in any of the factions. The preference in mitochondria for linoleic acid at the 2-position is strongly increased at high concentrations of lysophosphatidic acid.
