Corneal staining relating to contact lens wear.

This paper presents an overview of the common types of corneal staining that are encountered when wearing contact lenses. Included are descriptions of corneal staining occurring with rigid lenses (polymethylmethacrylate and cellulose acetate buterate), various types of hydrophilic lenses and silicone lenses. Specific patterns of sodium fluorescein staining are depicted and related to the various types of contact lenses.

Contact Lenses

A clinical study of CAB lens wear.

A clinical study of 100 patients fit with gas permeable contact lenses (cellulose acetate butyrate) reveals a 79% success rate. The authors found good eye physiological response with minimum corneal edema, minimum corneal staining, no increase in follicular hypertrophy and minimum spectacle blur.

Adolescent

Pitting stain with soft contact lenses--Hydrocurve thin series.

A survey of 85 of our patients (170 eyes) wearing relatively steep based curved Hydrocurve thin series hydrophilic lenses, shows that 32 percent of the eyes fit demonstrate a particular type of corneal staining (21 percent light, 6 percent moderate, and 5 percent heavy). We have designated this corneal epithelial staining as Pitting Stain. It occurs as concentrated, superficial, punctate staining that may coalesce and deepen into branching patterns with a whitish pitting appearance.

Adolescent

Arcuate staining.

Contact Lenses

An analysis of arcuate staining with the B&L SOFLENS. Part I.

A survey of 100 of our patients wearing Bausch & Lomb hydrophilic lenses shows that 38.5 per cent demonstrate corneal staining. The type of corneal staining that we are concerned with is epithelial, superficial, arcuate and usually located peripherally in an area between four and eight o'clock.

Adolescent

An analysis of arcurate staining with B&L SOFLENS. Part II.

A study of 72 eyes fit with hydrophilic lenses reveals that 46 per cent manifested arcuate staining. Arcuate staining is epithelial, superficial and located in an area between four and eight o'clock on the cornea. The authors relate several factors of soft lens fitting to the occurrence of arcuate staining.
