[Comparative assessment of two test systems for identification of enterobacteria].

Ninety-seven enterobacterial isolates from patients were identified parallel by Enterotest and MMT E1, a new test system developed in Russia. Enterotest helped identify 97% of enterobacterial strains, MMT E1 86.6%. The results coincided in 83.5% of cases. Enterotest system often failed to demonstrate reaction to phenylalanine, this impeding Proteus identification. Some tests failed in MMT E1 as well. Elimination of these shortcomings will improve the reliability of the test systems and permit their wider use at practical clinical microbiology laboratories.

[The dynamics of the wound microflora in the victims of the earthquake in Armenia].

The data on the composition of wound microflora, as well as changes in the contamination index over the course of treatment of patients with the syndrome of prolonged compression, who were brought to the institute after the earthquake in Armenia, are presented. The authors characterize the structure of the causative agents of wound infection in the patients treated at the traumatological department of the institute over several years. The epidemiological situation in the hospital in the period when the earthquake victims were treated there is analyzed.

[The rapid diagnosis of the anaerobic component of mixed infections in surgery].

Rapid diagnosis of obligate anaerobes was conducted by means of gas liquid chromatography, bacterioscopy, and monitoring. It was found that in 80% of patients the results of rapid diagnosis coincided with those of complete cultural study. Monitoring of obligate anaerobes yields generalized information on their species composition, drug sensitivity, and etiological importance in mixed anaerobo-aerobic infections. The data of rapid diagnosis makes it possible to use directed antibiotic therapy before bacteriological examination is completed.

[Identification of staphylococci isolated from suppurative-inflammatory processes using the STAPHYtest].

Ninety-four strains of staphylococci isolated from patients with pyoinflammatory processes were identified with the use of STAPHYtest system. This test system helps identify 72% of strains. 80.9% of coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated mainly from the wounds were identified as S. aureus. Half of coagulase-negative staphylococci were referred to S. epidermidis. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are isolated almost equally frequently from all types of pathologic material.

[The wound microflora of patients with gunshot injuries to the extremities during a mass hospitalization].

The dynamic study of the microflora of bullet wounds in 32 patients was carried out. In cases of mass hospitalization coccal microflora (staphylococci and streptococci) was mainly isolated from wounds, at the period of treatment hospital infections with enterobacteria, Pseudomonas and Enterococcus occurred. Before cleaning the wound a decrease in the contamination rate for all microbial species was observed. As the disease progressed an increase in the amount of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains was registered. The results of sanitary microbiological investigations made in the wards where the wounded patients were treated correspond to the structure of the causative agents of purulent processes in patients.
