On the general concepts of action and ability. A philosophical introduction to the theory of handicaps.

The main task of this paper is to contribute to the theory of disabilities and handicaps, in particular their characterization and classification. It presents an analysis of the conditions for the successful performance of actions. By this procedure a list of reasons for failure of action, i.e., for disability and handicap, is obtained. This list can be used for a detailed classification of disabilities and handicaps. Some theories in modern philosophical action theory serve as platforms for the analysis.

Behavior

Routine ERG recording using medium frequency flicker stimulus.

A medium frequency flicker stimulus of 10 Hz is evaluated in routine clinical ERG recording in detecting cone disorders. Tested on a number of normal eyes and on eyes with confirmed or suspected retinal disease it appears to be very useful as a complement to the standard program with the Krakau-Ohman apparatus. It yields an easily recordable and quantified response.

Adult

Ocular herpes simplex infection. A clinical evaluation of virus isolation and studies on iodo-deoxyuridine resistance.

Fifty-seven patients with ocular herpes simplex (HS) infection were studied for evaluation of existing methods for virus isolation and its application in diagnosis of HS infection. Virus was isolated in 90% of 34 cases with keratitis dendritica, when specimens were taken within eight days of onset of symptoms. The same isolation frequency was obtained in 10 cases of palpebral herpes with conjunctivitis. No isolation was possible in 11 cases of keratitis disciformis. Laboratory confirmation was obtained within four days in 70% of the positive cases. Ten strains of HS virus type 1 were examined for IDU resistance, 5 strains isolated prior to and 5 during IDU treatment. Nine of the strains had the same degree of sensitivity. One strain isolated during treatment was found to be highly resistant.

Cells, Cultured

Routine ERG recording with LED light stimulus.

An apparatus for ERG recording in clinical practice using light-emitting diodes as stimulation light is described and evaluated. By introducing special electronic devices, slow potentials (c-wave) can be recorded and there is no need for a shielded cage. The function of the set-up is trouble-free and the reproducibility is very satisfying.
