HLA antigens in ulcerative colitis: a study in the Sicilian population.

HLA antigens were investigated in 41 Sicilian patients with ulcerative colitis and in 151 healthy controls. Frequencies of HLA-B5 and DR2 were increased in the group of patients with ulcerative colitis whereas the DR3 antigen frequency was decreased. However the corrected p values were not significant. Thus, present results indicate that in ulcerative colitis HLA linked genetic factors play a marginal role, if any.

Sonographic appearance of fecal masses.

Fecal impaction, caused by incomplete evacuation of feces over an extended length of time, may lead to the formation of a fecaloma, a large, firm mass of stool. Sonography is commonly used as the first imaging procedure in patients presenting with abdominal masses. In the five cases cited, fecaloma was suspected by sonography in four cases; confirmation was obtained by rectal examination in three cases and by radiographic studies in two cases. A representative case report is presented of a 74-year-old woman who had a large pelvic mass detected on physical examination. Sonographically, the fecaloma had a highly echogenic surface and a posterior acoustic shadow. Radiographic examination showed a "soap bubble" appearance, suggestive of stool. Thus, fecaloma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with highly reflective and shadowing abdominal and/or pelvic masses.

CT evaluation of the pelvic cavity after cystectomy: observation in 40 cases.

This study reports our experience with CT in 40 patients who underwent total cystectomies. This technique permits careful monitoring of post-operative recovery and defects and identifies complications, local recurrences, or diffuse neoplastic spread. In complete cystectomies with or without neobladder, the possibility of recognizing abnormalities depends on the operator's ability to recognize normal postoperative modifications and asymmetry in the muscle masses along the lateral walls and to identify any unusual masses. Local recurrence in the pelvic cavity can show up as alterations in the thickness of the soft structures that cover the pelvic walls or as new masses. A postoperative abscess is suggested by the demonstration of gas in a nonintestinal mass. A urinoma generally presents as a low density mass with a thin wall even if some urinomas communicate with the genitourinary tract and therefore opacify with the use of intravenous contrast medium administration. Despite these limitations, CT remains the best investigative technique for exploring the pelvic cavity after cystectomy, making it an indispensable examination in well-programmed patient follow-up.

[Doppler ultrasonic arteriography with colorimetric morpho-function analysis of frequency (Echoflow). Preliminary trials].

Doppler arteriography with chromatic frequency analysis is a new and very sound diagnostic method in cases of vascular disease. It can be carried out with apparatus such as the Echoflow (reg'd), a natural development of the Doppler technique ultrasonography. Vessels are shown in red, yellow, or blue, depending on the rate of their intraluminal flow. Surface arteries lying 5-6 cm below the skin and not hidden by bone can be studied. Preliminary results on 23 supra-aortic trunks, 21 lower extremity arterial systems, and 5 upper limb systems are described. The use of the instrument in other situations in also recommended.

[Use of common glass in radiation protection].

The X-ray absorption meter (Diagnostic energy between 20-60 Kev) of common place-glass has been studied. The possibility of replacing lead glass with a reinforced type, also very cheap, has been examined.
