The persistence of microorganisms on impression materials following disinfection.

Following in vitro inoculation with C albicans or P aeruginosa, three impression materials--polysulfide rubber, irreversible hydrocolloid, and poly(vinyl siloxane)--were disinfected with either 0.1% or 0.02% chlorhexidine gluconate and a quantitative assessment of the microorganisms was made. Very few microorganisms were retained on the poly(vinyl siloxane) material immediately after microbial inoculation. The numbers of microorganisms on polysulfide impression materials diminished rapidly with time even without disinfection, and a 30-minute disinfection procedure resulted in total microbe elimination. With irreversible hydrocolloid, microorganisms persisted and disinfection procedures were considerably less effective. When the disinfection efficacy of three commercially available agents was compared using irreversible hydrocolloid impression material, chlorhexidine gluconate (0.2%) was found to be less effective than either glutaraldehyde (2%) or sodium hypochlorite (0.0125%); the latter two agents were comparable in their antimicrobial effect. Thus, a simple disinfection regime of 30 minutes with commonly available disinfectants may be effective in eliminating cross-contamination from impression materials.

Hairy leukoplakia: a new clinical entity.

Recent advances in therapy mean that prompt diagnosis of AIDS can prolong the life of those infected. Hairy leukoplakia is a new clinical entity that is one of the early signs of HIV seropositivity, and the GDP is well placed to recognize this lesion and refer patients on for treatment. In this second article in the twice-yearly Aids Commentary series the author describes how to diagnose this new condition, and the treatments that are available.

The efficacy of rubber dam isolation in reducing atmospheric bacterial contamination.

A study was made to ascertain the efficacy of rubber dam isolation in controlling atmospheric bacterial contamination, when conservative pedodontic procedures are performed. There was a highly significant (p less than 0.001) reduction in bacterial contamination of the atmosphere, perioperatively, when rubber dam isolation was used. As the reduction in bacterial aerosols was greatest at 1 m from the headrest, the use of rubber dam would minimize significantly the inhalation of infective aerosols by dental personnel.

Adenine auxotrophic heterozygosity in Candida krusei.

Candida krusei CK 18 carries heterozygosity for a recessive adenine biosynthesis allele, as it can be induced by UV irradiation to form adenine mutants at high frequency. The resultant mutants were characterized with the phenotype of red colony and residual growth on minimal media. The majority of the descendant prototrophic segregates were capable of continuous segregation to adenine mutants, suggesting gene conversion as one possible mechanism for the occurrence of the adenine auxotroph in the isolate.

Oral Candida infections--a review.

Candida species are the commonest agents of oral mycoses. They cause a variety of diseases including the new variant, erythematous candidosis, which is frequently described in HIV infection. Due to these and other reasons the classification of oral candidosis has been recently revised, and further more new therapeutic regimes have been described. Hence in this article an overview of oral Candida infections is presented with special emphasis on current concepts related to classification and treatment.
