Structure and giant magnetoresistance behaviour of Co-Cu/Cu multilayers electrodeposited under various deposition conditions.

Electrodeposited Co-Cu/Cu multilayers were prepared under a variety of deposition conditions on either a polycrystalline Ti foil or on a silicon wafer covered by a Ta buffer and a Cu seed layer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed a strong (111) texture for all multilayers with clear satellite peaks for the multilayers on Si/Ta/Cu substrates, in some cases for up to three reflections. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy investigations indicated a much more uniform multilayer structure on the Si/Ta/Cu substrates. The bilayer periods from XRD satellite reflections were in reasonable agreement with nominal values. An analysis of the overall chemical composition of the multilayers gave estimates of the sublayer thickness changes due to the Co-dissolution process during the Cu deposition pulse. The XRD lattice spacing data indicated a behaviour close to a simple "multilayer" Vegard's law which was, however, further refined by taking into account elastic strains as well. In agreement with the structural studies, magnetoresistance data also indicated the formation of more perfect multilayers on the smooth Si/Ta/Cu substrates. An analysis of the magnetoresistance behaviour revealed the presence of superparamagnetic (SPM) regions in the magnetic layers. The contribution of these SPM regions to the total observed giant magnetoresistance was found to be dominating under certain deposition conditions, e.g., for magnetic layer thicknesses less than 1 nm (about 5 monolayers).

[Prognosis and invasion marker expression of cutaneous melanoma. Metastasis-associated genes (nm23, CD44v3, MMP2].

For the evaluation of the prognosis of the melanoma malignum (MM) several markers have been used before but none of them was powerful enough therefore a search for new markers is justified. The authors have studied the expression of three metastasis associated proteins, nm23, CD44v3 and MMP2 collagenase using immunohistochemistry on the paraffin embedded tissue samples of 22 primary skin melanomas. The expression of these markers was independent from the thickness of the tumor or the clinical stage of the disease. Due to the frequent discrepancy between the thickness of the tumor and the actual outcome of the disease, they regrouped the cases according to the biological behaviour of the tumor into non-metastatic, lymph node-metastatic and organ metastatic forms. Based on the MMP2 expression +/- tumors can be found but the expression does not correspond to the biological behaviour of MM while decreased nm23 expression characterized the lymph node metastatic tumors. CD44v3 expression was rare in MM and occurred at low level, however, when expressed it showed significant correlation to the organ metastatic phenotype. The authors concluded that the classic invasion markers in case of MM have a limited potential in the characterisation of the invasive phenotype, therefore more sensitive markers are necessary.

[Telescopic anastomosis in esophageal and gastric surgery].

In 1991 we tried to adopt the telescopic anastomosis technique which had been used in bowel surgery made with the esophagus. In our method a 1.5-2 cm long stump of the distal esophagus is laid in the lumen end-to-side of the other organ (stomach, jejunum, large bowel). The oral the worst blood supplied part of the stomach has also removed and an end-to-end anastomosis has been made. We used this method in 125 patients until the end of 1997. In 89 cases during esophageal resections, and from it in 36 cases the anastomoses were made and-to-end, in 36 cases during total gastrectomies were made telescopic anastomosis leakage in the neck that healed after conservative treatment. We noticed advanced ischemic necrosis of the stomach used for replacement in 4 cases. Two of these patients healed after operative treatment. After gastrectomies all anastomosis healed without any complication. In 6 cases occurred anastomotic stenosis always after anastomotic leakage. 3 patients could be treated with dilatation, in 3 cases had to make reoperations due to stenosis. The authors emphasize that the method is simple, made in single lawyer, the sutures are not drained the lumen. They have not got strong opinion about the propensity for stenosis due to few cases.

Effect of intracerebral serotonin administration on pituitary-thyroid function.

Thyroid function was investigated following intrahypothalamic implantation of cannulae containing 80 mug serotonin-creatine sulphate or after intraventricular injection of 100 mug of the same substance. Control animals received either needle implantations or intraventricular injections of creatine-sulphate. Thyroid/serum 131-I ratio, activity of the thyroid gland as evaluated histologically and thyrotrophic hormone (THS) content in the pituitary were significantly decreased in serotonin-treated animals. Thyrotrophic hormone releasing hormone (TRH) concentration of the hypothalamus was also significantly lowered in serotonin-treated animals when compared to intact controls. Creatine-sulphate injected rats showed a slight decrease of TSH content of the pituitary and of TRH concentration of the hypothalamus which is probably due to a stress effect caused by the intracranial intervention and/or by the intraventricular administration of a relatively large molecule, such as creatine sulphate. It is concluded that serotonin decreases the functional activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid system by inhibiting the TRH-secretion of the hypothalamus.
