[Determination of metal dusts in aerosols using x-ray fluorescence. Comparison with other analytical methods].

Determination of metals in aerosol collected as thin layer on membran filters has made employing X-ray fluorescence. Standards are prepared in suitable chambers: dust collected on membran filter is weighted. The problems of methodology are discussed. Calibration curves have been prepared for Pb - Fe - Cd - Si; comparisons have been made with other methods employing atomic absorption spectroscopy.

[Determination of metals in biological fluids].

The AA. show the analytical methods which can be used to determine the presence of metals in the biological liquids by means of the atomic absorption spectroscopy. For some metals the analysis can be directly achieved by means of atomisation of the biological liquid in a flame or in a graphite furnace; for other metals it is necessary a treatment of the sample to separate the metal from the rest of the matrix, which can be: calcination, microcalcination, mining. In the final part of this paper, a table is showed with the concentration values in urine, blood, serum of occupationally exposed subjects and not, for the following metals: Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Hg, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn.

[Calibration of selective samplers for respirable dust].

The AA., after a short introduction on the concepts of respirable dust consider the double stage selective samplers in the literature. They suggest three of them, which are all characterized by different suction flows; the features of separation of the dust in the air are documented by means of calibrated mixtures of aerosol. As to the penetration ACGIH curve, satisfactory results are obtainable fro the 12 mm sampler with a 10 l/min flow and for the 25.4 mm sampler with a 70 l/min flow. The tests achieved with the Dorr-Oliver 10 mm metal sampler do not agree with the above mentioned curve for a capacity included between 0.7 and 2.5 l/min.

[Functional conditions of the respiratory system and work site pollution. III. Relationships between "risk indicators" and "respiratory risk" in a chemical industry (author's transl)].

The results are reported of a retrospective study carried out by the authors on 717 workers of a chemical industry whose exposure was diversified and quantified through a work environment survey. A comparison between "risk indicators" and both objective (respiratory function changes) and subjective (chronic bronchopneumopathy symptoms) "risks" showed a significant probability of the causal role played by work environment pollution in respect of the repiratory changes found by the authors.

[Functional conditions of the respiratory system and work site pollution. II. Prevalence of respiratory function changes in workers employed in bichromate and chromic acid production (author's transl)].

The authors report the prevalence of respiratory function changes in two groups of workers employed in bichromate and chromic acid production. In the first group (82 subjects) examined at the Institute of Occupational Medicine, the following tests were performed: filling out of a questionnaire for cronic bronchitis; chest x-ray; spirometry; pulmonary diffusing capacity (DLco) measurement; blood gas analysis on arteriolized capillary; He and CO2 rapid expiratory curves determination. No environmental pollution data were available. In the second group (180 subjects) examined at the working site, the following tests were performed: filling out of a questionnaire -or chronic bronchitis; spirometric determination. Environmental pollution data were available. A causal connection is hypothesized by the authors between either roentgenologic or respiratory functional changes and chromium exposure, and an increased proportion between lung function changes and exposure length is stressed.

[Environmental and biological monitoring of subjects occupationally exposed to precious metals (gold lost-wax casting)].

Environmental monitoring during lost wax casting in jewelry handicrafts was performed for gold, silver, zinc and copper by means of personal samplers and ICP-AAS techniques were used for determining airborne metals. Personal sampling was prolonged for a working week by continuous monitoring during 8 hours shifts, replacing the membrane filter every 2 hours, in 6 workers; in the same workers urine samples were collected during the week and levels of Au, Ag, Zn and Cu were measured by ETA-AAS. During casting process Ag air concentrations ranged 0.27-0.6 mg/m3 while mean levels of Au, Cu, and Zn were 0.028 0.030 and 0.056 mg/m3 respectively. Urinary excretion of Ag (I) determined by solvent extraction and separation by liquid anion exchanger proved very high, after 24-36 h from the casting processes.

[Individual dosimetry and biologic monitoring of workers exposed to low concentrations of aniline].

Low aniline vapours concentration exposure has been studied through either active or passive individual dosimeter, in a group of workmen employed in the production of an antioxidant for the rubber industry. We collected 28 samples, confirming the clear correlation existing between the two methods which was already demonstrated in a previous work. We newly suggest the usefulness of the individual passive dosimeter instead of the traditional vacuum pump system. Meanwhile we have determined bound and free aniline and total aromatic amines, with and without an extractive method on column, on urinary samples collected before and after the workshift. The values so obtained have been compared with the results of the active individual dosimetry. We could demonstrated a statistical significative correlation only between urinary aniline determination and the level of exposure, so confirming the value of this parameter as biological indicator of occupational exposure.
