[Conservative treatment of vertical recti and oblique muscle deviation in permanent and accommodative strabismus].

The aim of this study was observation of influence of exercises with hypercorrective prisms on the behavior of vertical recti and oblique muscles. The study covered 182 persons with permanent strabismus (4 persons were operated early) and 8 children with accommodative strabismus. As treatment we applied exercises with hypercorrective prisms of 35 dioptres in front of each eye with the edge in direction of the biggest deviation of the eye. A full regression of the hyperfunction of muscles was noticed in 25 patients. The favourable changes were achieved in 38 patients. However the majority of patients were not doing the exercises systematically. Surely it is not the only reason of the lack of final beneficial result of exercises. The applied localization exercises with prismatic hypercorrection in hyperfunctions of vertical recti and oblique muscles gave beneficial result in form of regression of these hyperfunctions or reduction of the range of their deviation. There was also favorable influence on the regression of "residual" deviations of eye after operations. Application of such exercises in accommodative strabismus with hyperfunction of vertical recti and oblique muscles prevent from dissociation of binocular vision and genesis of permanent strabismus.

[Neoplasms of the orbit and ocular adnexa in children--diagnosis and treatment].

Analysis of diagnosis and treatment of the orbit and ocular adnexa in 38 children was made. In 24 cases (63%) benign and in 14 (37%) malignant neoplasms were diagnosed. Among malignant neoplasms there were: 1 melanoma of the conjunctiva, 5 lymphoma, 1 carcinoma sebaceum, 1 pigmentary progonoma, 3 rhabdomyosarcoma, 1 fibrosarcoma and 2 embryonic ganglioma. Usefulness of the applied diagnostic methods and results of treatment are discussed. Long-term results were good in all benign lesions. In malignant neoplasms, they depend on the period of diagnosis and beginning of the therapy.

[Evaluation of the effect of treatment with FIBS preparation on the clinical state and various parameters of the immune system in patients with uveitis].

The study material comprised 60 patients treated at the Clinic of Ophthalmology PMA in Szczecin, in the years from 1981 to 1984 due to uveitis. In the patients routine laboratory examinations were performed and extended by additional ones in the direction of diseases being of rheumatoidal type, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, diabetes and focal infections. All the patients had rosette tests of E, EA, EAC prior to treatment and after 30 days of therapy. The patients were divided at random into 2 groups with 30 persons each. Apart from typical treatment for uveitis the group I was given the FIBS preparation. The clinical picture failed to reveal any significant differences between the groups of patients. It was observed that the count of lymphocytes T and B in the peripheral blood was disturbed. After the applied treatment changes were recorded in the count of lymphocytes T and B, the shiftings in the group of patients, having been treated with FIBS, were marked more distinctly, particularly in the count of lymphocytes T.

[Laser therapy of ocular toxoplasmosis].

The authors present the results of treatment by laser coagulation of inflammatory retino-choroidal foci in 32 persons with ocular toxoplasmosis. The diagnosis of Toxoplasma etiology was set on a basis of positive immunological reaction for Toxoplasma gondii antigen and after exclusion of other etiological factors. Among 42 eyes stabilization of the process after 1 intervention was observed in 34, i.e. in 89 p.c. (period of observation--up to 4 years). In the following 8 eyes arised the necessity to perform additional coagulations because of formation of fresh foci which appeared in 5 eyes after 6 months, in 2 eyes after 1 year and in 1 eye after 2 years since onset. The authors consider the application of laser coagulation in ocular toxoplasmosis as a favourable method together--or independently--with pharmacological treatment.

[Disturbances of vertical muscle function treated with a localization method].

The studies comprised 84 patients with horizontal squint and deviation of the vertical muscles and 4 children with vertical muscles disturbance, without squint while looking straight ahead. In the majority of cases, hyperfunction of the inferior oblique and inferior rectus muscles in both eyes were observed. A short treatment with hyper-corrective prisms, set with the edge in the direction of the hyperfunctional muscles was applied. In 24 persons surgical treatment allowed to settle simultaneously hyperfunction of vertical muscles and horizontal deviations.
