Self-assembly of oligomeric porphyrin rings.

A cobalt porphyrin equipped with two different but geometrically complementary pyridine ligands self-assembles to form an unusually stable complex with approximately 12 porphyrin monomers arranged in a macrocyclic array.

Assessment of alcohol dependence and other psychiatric disorders: implications for rehabilitation programs of the DUI offender.

This paper focuses on the psychological make-up or profile of the first time "apprehended" Driving Under the Influence offenders from the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The profiles are compiled using a variety of psychological tests assessing issues of: Alcohol Dependence, Major Depression, Personality deviance, alcohol induced Organicity and severe Psychiatric impairment (symptoms of schizophrenia and manic-depressive disorders). 91% of the alcohol impaired drivers complained of at least some acute symptoms of depression. However, in total 38% of the sample showed significant signs of a clinical psychiatric syndrome (one requiring intervention or treatment) in addition to alcohol dependence. The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test and the MacAndrews Alcoholism Test proved to be a useful combination in defining alcohol dependence.

The drug impaired driver. Detection and forensic specimen analysis.

Whole blood samples were collected from arrested D. U. I. subjects in two locations, by the U. S. Park Police (USPP) in and around Washington, D. C. and through a suburban police department (MLMP), for the purpose of detecting illicit drug use. All blood samples were screened using an adapted Abuscreen RIA to non-urine (blood) procedure for the following drugs: THC, Cocaine, PCP, and Opiates. Forensic samples were confirmed through GC/MS. Results and characteristics of drug offenders are presented. It was found that 39 percent of sampled offenders from the MLMP showed measurable levels of cannabinoids. 9.5 percent of sampled offenders from the USPP showed measurable levels of Phencyclidine. Recommendations are made for the processing of suspected drug impaired drivers.

Diazepam abuse in pregnant women on methadone maintenance. Implications for the neonate.

The authors found that the course and treatment of narcotic withdrawal in two neonates was complicated by prenatal exposure to high doses of diazepam, or Valium (Roche Laboratories, Nutley, NJ). Both of the mothers were on methadone maintenance for narcotic dependency prior to the diagnosis of pregnancy. The authors documented maternal intake of diazepam in the range of 40-60 mg/day for a duration of 4-27 weeks prior to delivery. Both infants initially responded well to medical therapy for narcotic withdrawal, but at 7-14 days of age, withdrawal symptoms intensified, requiring an increase in the dosages of Paregoric (UDL Laboratories, Rockford, IL) and opium tincture in both infants and the addition of phenobarbital therapy in one infant. Both infants continued on medical therapy until they reached 1 month of age. Diazepam use by pregnant women can be associated with a later presentation of withdrawal symptoms in the neonate than that induced by the use of other drugs. Close follow-up during the first month of life is warranted for infants exposed to diazepam prenatally.

Evidential breath ethanol analyzers, accuracy and sensitivity to breath acetone.

The purposes of this study included the examination of the relative accuracy of a number of evidential breath analyzers available in the United States, the sensitivity of ethanol breath analyzers to simulated breath acetone and the generation and subsequent interference created by endogenous acetone. This study used both laboratory simulation and human ethanol testing as well as a systematic examination of the sensitivity of various ethanol breath test instruments to both endogenous and simulated breath acetone. The results suggest that when evidential breath ethanol testers are administered in a uniform fashion, consistent and reliable results occur. Further, endogenous and simulated breath acetone can effect infrared ethanol breath testers but at levels in the case of endogenous acetone, in a non-significant fashion. Simulated breath acetone, consistent with other research produced selective interference on evaluation of breath instruments. The instruments utilizing wavelength 3.4 microns infrared bands were affected the greatest. Endogenous breath and blood acetone was demonstrated in a non-diabetic. The resulting breath acetone levels did produce mimicked ethanol levels on all single wavelength (3.4 microns range) instruments. Nine micron IR range instruments and the Breathalyzer 900 which utilizes a wet chemical procedure were unaffected by endogenous acetone. Those instruments equipped with acetone detectors, found in certain instruments, did not identify endogenously produced acetone.
