Effect of xyloglucan (tamarind seed polysaccharide) on conjunctival cell adhesion to laminin and on corneal epithelium wound healing.

PURPOSE: To explore the role of a natural polysaccharide extracted from tamarind seed (xyloglucan, or tamarind seed polysaccharide, TSP) on the integrin-substrate recognition system and on repair of corneal wounds. METHODS: a) Cultured human conjunctival cells were labeled by addition of a tritiated amino acid mixture. Their adhesion to laminin-coated culture wells in the absence or presence of TSP was checked by radioactivity count. b) The corneal epithelium of albino rabbits was damaged by applying a paper disc soaked with n-heptanol. The eyes were then treated with TSP, with a hyaluronate reference formulation and with normal saline solution (controls). The diameter of corneal wounds was measured daily, after fluorescein staining. RESULTS: Compared to hyaluronate, TSP slightly but significantly increased the wound healing rate. TSP 1.0% exerted a positive influence on cell adhesion to laminin, up to a certain laminin concentration. CONCLUSIONS: The ability of the polysaccharide to promote corneal wound healing might depend on its influence on the integrin recognition system.

[Effect of x-rays on the hemolytic substances of the Yoshida ascites tumor].

Ricinoleic-like haemolytic substances were isolated from tumour cells and peritoneal liquid fractions in rats with Yoshida's ascities hepatoma. Their activity was measured by means of photometric techniques. Crossed haemolytic tests showed differences in the choice expressed by these substances for the red cells of animals of various species. Whole body irradiation led to changes in the quantity of these substances. Their metabolism was examined by administering 3H2- and 14C6-labelled oleic acid. A variety of results was observed. Microscopic examination of target red cells in a study of the oleic acid-lysine-membrane bond confirmed the results given by the densitometer.

Computerized interactive morphometry as a potentially useful tool for the study of human placenta.

Two hundred human term placentas underwent morphometric study by means of semiautomated computerized method. Outer villous perimeter per cent parenchymal area and mean chord length were the investigated parameters. The mean value of outer villous perimeter, mean chord length and per cent area were respectively 46.9 mu (X 1000 mu 2) with a standard deviation of 4.6, 57.7 mu (standard deviation 9.3) and 66.1% (standard deviation 7.4). The relative distribution of these various parameters can constitute a valid basis for a comparison in cases of placental insufficiency.

[Peri-navel intestinal patch-like choristia (author's transl)].

The authors describe an umbilical anomaly marked by confluent erythematous and crusted plaques, spreading beyond the navel limits and histologically regarded as a choristia that is to say a displacement of intestinal tissue within the epidermis. The ultrastructural study investigated the relationship between intestinal cells and keratinocytes. The authors believe that behaviour analogies exist between ectopic intestinal cells and Paget's cells.
