Genetic heterogeneity and familial carcinoma of the breast.

The particular patterns of familial aggregations of cancer in the several families reported from our clinical resource suggest that multiple genotypes explain their diversity of cancer susceptibility. This knowledge could be of value in improving cancer control. We postulate that each particular genotype functions in concert with differential carcinogenic interactions, including a possible oncogenic virus, contributing to carcinogenesis in the susceptible patient. This reasoning is consistent with a concept of genetic heterogeneity as an explanation for familial carcinoma of the breast. This phenomenon is not unlike the current explanation for the genetics of the mucopolysaccaridoses, the lipidoses and several other major disorders of man which show genetic heterogeneity.

Acute osteomyelitis in children: a review of 116 cases.

We reviewed 116 cases of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) (without septic joints) from 1979 to 1985 to establish current patterns of clinical presentation, modes of treatment, and success of therapy. We found that patients present early in the course of their disease, and many have no findings other than local tenderness and an elevated sedimentation rate. Sixty-four of the patients were treated nonoperatively. The average antibiotic treatment time was 2 weeks by intravenous (i.v.) administration followed by additional outpatient oral therapy for periods of up to 4 weeks. This treatment regimen applied specifically to acute osteomyelitis led to no known treatment failures.

Alzheimer's disease: new horizons in diagnosis and treatment.

We are in the midst of an explosion in research in Alzheimer's disease. Advances in our scientific understanding of genetic factors and pathogenesis are leading to enhanced diagnostic capabilities and new presymptomatic and symptomatic therapies. Estrogen therapy in postmenopausal females and NSAIDs show early promise, while AChE inhibitors keep getting better. Armed with knowledge and new diagnostic and therapeutic tools, we can finally begin to fight this devastating disease.

Provisionals: not just temporaries.

When a provisional is to be worn for an extended period of time, the laboratory-processed provisional may be indicated because of its strength, wear-resistance and resistance to discoloration. A large selection of shades are available, resulting in better esthetics. The incisal blend gives the provisional a translucent effect. Office visits for repairs and maintenance will be minimized. If the patient has confidence after the provisional visit, he or she will have equal confidence in the final restoration. The only difference between the two should be the materials used.
