Synthesis of new tricyclic phosphines and phosphinites by intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions of trivalent phospholes.

Phospholes bearing an allyl-X substituent at phosphorus tend to undergo an intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition (IMDA) leading to the corresponding tricyclic derivative. When X = O or NR, the IMDA easily takes place at room temperature. When X = CH2, the IMDA slowly takes place around 110-140 degrees C, as a function to the substitution pattern of the dienic system. Two tricyclic derivatives (X = O and CH2) have been characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis of the P-sulfides.

Di- and tetranuclear palladium complexes incorporating phospha- and diphosphaferrocenes as ligands.

Monophosphaferrocenes and 4 react with [Pd(COD)Cl2] (COD = cyclooctadiene) to afford cis- [Pd(1 or 4)2Cl2] complexes that slowly decompose in solution to give dimeric complexes 3 and 6 of general formula [[Pd(1 or 4)Cl]2]. In these dimers, which incorporate a Pd-Pd bond, phosphaferrocenes act as four electron donors through the phosphorus-atom lone pair (mu2-bonded) and through one orbital of appropriate symmetry at iron. These dimers can also be more conventionally prepared from the reaction of cis- [Pd(1 or 4) Cl2] complexes with [Pd(dba)2] (dba = dibenzylidene acetone). The reaction of octaethyldiphosphaferrocene (7) with [Pd(COD)Cl2] yields a dinuclear complex [Pd2(7)2Cl4] (8) in which the two ligands 7 are coordinated in a trans fashion through the phosphorus-atom lone pairs. Decomposition of 8 in solution yields a dimeric dicationic complex of general formula [[Pd2(7)2Cl]2]2+[FeCl4]2- (9a) incorporating four palladium atoms. In each ligand. one phospholyl ring behaves as a two-electron donor through the phosphorus-atom lone pair whereas the second binds two palladium centers in a mu2-fashion. A plausible mechanism that explains the formation of dimers 3, 6, and 9a involves the preliminary oxidation of the mono- or diphosphaferrocene ligand. Parallel experiments aimed at confirming this hypothesis have shown that complex 9a can be synthesized from the reaction of FeCl2 with complex 8. Also presented is another synthetic approach to the synthesis of the tetranuclear complex 9b (counterion is GaCl4-) from the reaction of the palladium(0) complex [Pd(7)2] (10) with [Pd(COD)Cl2] the presence of GaCl3 as chloride abstractor.

Formation of a phosphorus-phosphorus bond by successive one-electron reductions of a two-phosphinines-containing macrocycle: crystal structures, EPR, and DFT investigations.

Chemical and electrochemical reductions of the macrocycle 1 lead to the formation of a radical monoanion anion [1](*)(-) whose structure has been studied by EPR in liquid and frozen solutions. In accord with experimental (31)P hyperfine tensors, DFT calculations indicate that, in this species, the unpaired electron is mainly localized in a bonding sigma P-P orbital. Clearly, a one-electron bond (2.763 A) was formed between two phosphorus atoms which, in the neutral molecule, were 3.256 A apart (crystal structure). A subsequent reduction of this radical anion gives rise to the dianion [1](2)(-) which could be crystallized by using, in the presence of cryptand, Na naphthalenide as a reductant agent. As shown by the crystal structure, in [1](2)(-), the two phosphinine moieties adopt a phosphacyclohexadienyl structure and are linked by a P-P bond whose length (2.305(2) A) is only slightly longer than a usual P-P bond. When the phosphinine moieties are not incorporated in a macrocycle, no formation of any one-electron P-P bond is observed: thus, one-electron reduction of 3 with Na naphthalenide leads to the EPR spectrum of the ion pair [3](*)(-) Na(+); however, at high concentration, these ion pairs dimerize, and, as shown by the crystal structure of [(3)(2)](2)(-)[(Na(THF)(2))(2)](2+) a P-P bond is formed (2.286(2) A) between two phosphinine rings which adopt a boat-type conformation, the whole edifice being stabilized by two carbon-sodium-phosphorus bridges.

Enhancing the dienic reactivity of phospholes: an improved access to trivalent 7-phosphanorbornenes.

A structural comparison of 1-cyano- and 1-alkoxy-3,4-dimethylphospholes with 1-benzylphosphole has led to some unexpected conclusions. There is no univocal relationship between phosphole aromaticity and pyramidality at phosphorus. It has been found that both the highly pyramidal 1-cyanophosphole 1 (sigma(CPC angles) = 290 degrees), and the much less pyramidal 1-alkoxyphosphole 6 (sigma(CPC angles) = 310 degrees) have a low Bird aromaticity index (27 for both molecules), when compared to 1-benzylphosphole (sigma(CPC angles) = 303 degrees, BI = 35.5). This low aromaticity is correlated with a high reactivity of the diene in both 1 and 7 (similar to 6) toward acrylonitrile. Good stereochemical control is observed with 7, which gives exclusively the anti, endo [4 + 2] cycloadducts with acrylonitrile and diethyl vinylphosphonate.

Gold(I) and Gold(0) Complexes of Phosphinine-Based Macrocycles.

A "CO-like matrix", showing coordination analogous to that of carbonyl groups, is provided by silacalix[4]phosphinine macrocycles. Reaction with Au(I) leads to the first gold(I) complexes of macrocycles, which can be reduced with sodium or potassium to the paramagnetic gold(0) complexes (an example is shown), as evidenced by cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy.

Microbial hydroxylation of natural drimenic lactones.

Incubation of confertifolin and isodrimenin with Mucor plumbeus, Aspergillus niger or Rhizopus arrhizus gave in good yields the corresponding 3 beta-hydroxy derivatives. From isodrimenin, the known natural 7 alpha-hydroxy derivative (futronolide) was also obtained and its structure was definitely established by X-ray crystallographic study of its acetate derivative.

The synthesis of polyphosphinine macrocycles, which consist of a 16-membered ring with four phosphorus atoms (P4) and a 12-membered ring with three phosphorus atoms (P3), is described. Their high coordination ability is demonstrated by the quantitative synthesis of the rhodium and iridium cation complexes of the P4 macrocycle and by quantitative synthesis of the W(CO)3 complex of the P3 compound. Unlike the other available macrocyclic ligands bearing oxygen, sulfur, di- or tricoordinate nitrogen, and even tricoordinate phosphorus as ligating atoms, which are all essentially final sigma donors, these dicoordinate phosphorus-based macrocycles have strong pi-acceptor properties. Their use can be envisaged for the stabilization of negative oxidation states of transition metals or in reductive catalysis.

Characterization of allelic V kappa-1 region genes in inbred strains of mice.

Germ line genes encoding mouse Ig kappa-chains belonging to the V kappa-1 group have been isolated from BALB/c, NZB, and CE, three inbred strains of differing kappa haplotype. The V kappa-1A and V kappa-1C germ line genes isolated from BALB/c (Ig kappa c) were identical to those previously described. These are the two major V kappa-1 germ line genes in BALB/c and together account for 40 of the 53 expressed V kappa-1 sequences that have been reported to date. Allelic differences in a single germ line variable region gene (V kappa-1A) in different strains of mice explain the differences in L chain IEF patterns previously associated with the Ig kappa-Ef2 locus. The rearranged kappa-gene expressed in the BALB/c myeloma MOPC-460 has been isolated and found to represent a V kappa-1A somatic variant differing by three nucleotides from the germ line V kappa-1A gene. Germ line genes isolated from NZB (Ig kappa b) and CE (Ig kappa f) show greater than 95% identity with the BALB/c genes over the 1700 nucleotides compared. Comparison by region indicated the greatest conservation of sequence occurs in and around the leader exon followed by the V-region exon. The NZB gene encodes the amino acid sequence found in the myeloma PC-2205, previously designated V kappa-1B. The V kappa-1 gene isolated from CE is likely an allele of the BALB/c V kappa-1C gene as the two share greater than 96% identity over 1700 nucleotides. The CE gene has been designated V kappa-1Cf. Ancient remnants of LINE-1 repetitive elements were detected approximately 400 bp downstream of all of the V kappa-1 genes. These possess greater homology with repetitive elements found near other kappa genes than they do with the native L1Md sequence.

Synthesis, structure and spectroscopic properties of two models for the active site of the oxygenated state of cytochrome P450 [corrected].

Two dioxygen adducts of thiolato-iron(II) porphyrins, [K(222)][Fe(TPpivP)(SC6HF4)(O2)] 1a and [Na(18c.6)][Fe(TPpivP)(SC6HF4)(O2)] 2 were synthesized by reaction of O2 with five-coordinate, high-spin, cryptated alkali metal thiolato-iron(II) 'picket fence' porphyrinate. They were characterized by visible and infrared spectroscopy: lambda max (log epsilon) = 360 nm (4), 427 nm (4.69), 560 nm (3.69), 610 nm (3.40) for both compounds; v(16O-16O) = 1139 cm-1 in chlorobenzene and fluorobenzene for 1a and 2. Single crystals of composition [K(222)][Fe(TPpivP)(SC6HF4)(O2)].[K(222)](SC6HF4)(C 6H5Cl)(H2O) 1b were obtained by diffusion of pentane/xylene mixtures into chlorobenzene solutions of 1a at -5 degrees C. Single crystals of composition [Na(18c.6)][Fe(TPpivP)(SC6HF4)(O2)] were obtained by slow diffusion of pentane into benzene solutions of 2. Structures of 1b and 2 were studied at 20 degrees C (1b) and -100 degrees C (1b and 2). 1b: space group P2(1)/c (monoclinic), a = 16.806(5) A (1.6806 nm), b = 14.331(4) A (1.4331 nm), c = 52.000(15) A (5.2000 nm), beta = 92.95(2) degrees, V = 12.507 A3 (12.507 nm3), Z = 4, Dcal = 1.28 g.cm-3 (t = 20 degrees C). The final R1 factor was 0.085 for 5238 reflections having I greater than 3 sigma(I). 2: space group P2(1)/c (monoclinic), a = 13.107(3) A (1.3107 nm), b = 27.055(4) A (2.7055 nm), c = 25.029(4) A (2.5029 nm), beta = 96.84(2) degrees, V = 8812 A3 (8.812 nm3), Z = 4, Dcal = 1.18 g.cm-3 (t = -100 degrees C). The final R1 factor was 0.088 for 6587 reflections having I greater than 3 sigma(I). The iron atom is, in both compounds, bonded to the four porphyrinato nitrogens (Np), the sulfur atom of the axial thiolate and one oxygen atom of the axially end-on bonded dioxygen molecule. The average Fe-Np distance found in 1b [1.994(4) A, 0.1994 nm] is not significantly different from that found in 2 [1.993(3) A, 0.1993 nm]. The Fe-S bond length is 2.367(3) A (0.2367 nm) in 1b and 2.365(2) A (0.2365 nm) in 2. The Fe-O1 distances with the oxygen atom of O2 bonded to iron are respectively 1.837(9) A (0.1837 nm) and 1.850(4) A (0.1850 nm). The end-on bonded O2 molecule is disordered in both complexes 1b and 2.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
