Personal clinical experience in 36 psychiatric patients with true or masqued depression, receiving a combined treatment of acupuncture (in traditional and auricolar suprarenalic points), "vital" drugs (DPA 300-900 mg/die; l-glutamine 250-500 mg/die) and psycho-drugs (amitryptiline 50 mg/die; clomipramine 10-30 mg/die; diazepam 2-20 mg/die; haloperidol 2 mg/die) is described. 35 out of 36 cases improved by such therapy. Possible synergic mechanisms leading to a considerable reduction of usual phychodrugs, and attenuating or eliminating various side effects are finally discussed.
A description is given of the important part played by the skin as a site of electrical charges, as shown by the data offered by cutaneous electrophysiology. Personal research on 150 subjects is described. The results have useful applications in semeiotics and viscerocutaneous therapy. They also provice an explanation for the results achieved by acupuncture, a subject at present in the forefront of scientific investigation.
This report was read to the National Congress of the Italian Anaesthesia Society in 1976. A personal series of acupuncture induced anaesthesia is presented and a number of general remarks are made regarding the application of the technique to various areas of surgery.
Relaxation and tranquility are commonly induced by acupuncture. Techniques are presented and neurophysiological theories underlying the therapeutic effect are discussed. Emphasis is laid on the importance of this effect in psychiatric management.
The effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of lower limb obliterating arteritis as an alternative to pharmacological sympatheticolumbar block was assessed by comparing local O2 consumption in the ischaemic extremity. It was found that both techniques lead to vasodilation sufficient to normalise local values. Acupuncture, however, has a more protracted effect up to 24 hr., as compared with only 12 hr after pharmacological block.
Hospitals in communist China perfected a new acupuncture technique about 3 yrs ago, whereby needles are placed in the scalp to stimulate the cortical centres below. This method is particularly indicated in subjects with neurological damage. Results observed in 45 subjects with cerebral vasculopathy at the neurological clinic of Pisa University and the reflexotherapy service of the University of Turin were encouraging and suggest that clinical experimentation should be attempted on a wider scale.
On the basis of a study of the innervation of the cutaneous areas stimulated in cranial acupuncture, a neurophysiological classification of the technique is proposed, considering the bulbar level as the first site of integration of the afferent vessels activated by cranial acupuncture.
After stressing the uncertainties of classifying the syndrome exactly and the part played by psychosomatism in its aetiopathogenesis, some forms of acupuncture have been attempted as alternatives to psychodrugs and antispastic substances. 50 cases are examined in which diagnosis of irritable colon was confirmed by thorough clinical and laboratory examinations, use is also being made of appropriate computerizable tables.
The early clinical results of using acupuncture in painful face syndromes are reported. A nosological classification is given and techniques used and therapeutic indications presented in brief.
