[The efficacy of calcium channel blockers in the treatment of affective disorders and pathologic drive for alcohol in patients with alcoholism in the remission period].

Forty three patients with chronic alcoholism of stage II with secondary affective disorders (anxiety, subdepression) and actualization of pathological drive for alcohol in remission period were divided into 3 groups: patients were treated with nimodipine (90 mg/day during 10 days), patients were treated with nifedipine (45 mg/day during 10 days) and patients of control group (they received a placebo for 10 days). The study was double blind. The results revealed that both calcium channels antagonists reduced a level of depression measured with the Hamilton scale and Zung test. Ten-day nimodipine (but not nifedipine) course also caused a significant decrease of anxiety evaluated by the Spilberger test. Both medications, being significantly more efficient comparing to placebo, led to desactualization of pathological drive for alcohol in parallel with affective disorders reduction. Because of the absence of the depriming effect of these compounds on CNS as well as of dependence phenomenon, calcium channels antagonists may be used in narcology for stopping secondary affective disorders and actualization of pathological drive for alcohol in remission period.

[Hygienic aspects of the use of food additives].

The state of usage of food supplements was studies in Kiev and some Ukrainian regions. Remains of widely using food supplements were determined. The attempt to determine food supplements load on the person. The results of investigation have shown a possibility of food supplements consumption in amounts bordering upon permissible daily level or exceeding them.

[Cerebral blood flow function during altered cholinergic mediation].

The study of cerebral blood flow was performed with the aid of hydrogen clearance technique and the cinema-television method in alteration of cholinergic transmission by means of phosphorus-organic inhibitors of cholinesterase and a cholinolytic agent in unanesthetized rats. The enzyme inhibition by 60-70% sharply increased the velocity of blood flow in the microvessels of cerebral cortex and in the sagittal sinus. A considerable vasodilation of pial vessels occurred. Atropine administration reduced the velocity of both the cortical and the total blood flow, increasing the lumen of pial vessels in intact animals. Whereas atropine administration against the background of the inhibitors action normalized the blood low velocity with no elimination of the vasodilation of pial arteries. The findings suggest that atropine widely used in poisoning with various inhibitors of cholinesterase, does not normalize the tonus of cerebral vessels.

[Nutritional characteristics and the prevalence of obesity among individual groups of the population in the Ukrainian SSR].

The prevalence of adiposity and nutritional status among the working population of seven regions in the Ukrainian SSR (teachers, workers engaged in the chemical, metallurgical, textile, wood-working industries and in agriculture) were studied. Only 44 per cent of males and 25 per cent of females were found to be of normal weight. Some surplus weight had 21 per cent of men and 26 per cent of women, 9 per cent of men and 21 per cent of women suffered from adiposity of the 1st degree and 2 per cent of males and 15 per cent of females had adiposity of the II degree. The nutrition of the obese was more rich in calories at the expense of bread-stuffs, potato, pure carbohydrates and some products of animal origin (fats). Overweight and obesity were observed more often among teachers of both sex and also among female-workers of cotton factories and smelters. The proportion of the patients with cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders was higher among the obese. These data witness the need for differentiation of nutritional standards depending upon the energy spent by the representatives of individual occupational groups of the population.

[Medico-biological evaluation of sodium salt of nitrofurylacrylic acid as a food additive].

Nitrofurylacrylic acid sodium salt is a substance of moderate toxicity. Its LD50 for male rats after oral administration comprises 1220 mg/kg, for female rats--1400 mg/kg. The minimal toxic dose, in case of long-term administration comprises 14 mg/kg. At the level of doses from 0.04 to 4.0 mg/kg no mutagenic effect was detected. Oral and subcutaneous administration of minimal tolerance doses of the agent induced formation of malignant neoplasms developing, predominantly, from the epithelial tissue, with localization depending on the route of the agent administration. A conclusion has been made on impossibility of using this substance as a food additive.

[Hygienic substantiation of using new antibiotic preparations, tylosin phosphate and vitagrin as food additives].

Hygienic regulation of the use of the agents studied in animal experiments as food additives has been validated with respect to the dose level, regimen of addition and the period of waiting for slaughter. It is recommended that tylosin-phosphate should be included into the animals' ration as a food additive in a dose of 60 mg/kg for a short time (2-3 days), the period of waiting for slaughter being not less than 6-7 days. Addition of vitagrin has been recommended for young growing animals in a dose of 400-500 g/ton of feed. The dose of vitagrin should be reduced to 200-300 g/ton of feed one-two months before slaughter, with a 10-day period of waiting for slaughter.

[Experimental study of the possible use of sodium dehydroacetate as a food additive].

The results are presented of toxico-hygienic investigations of dehydroacetic acid sodium salt (DHASS) proposed as a food additive. The compound toxicity values have been assessed, and late results of the preservative influence on the body of experimental animals after its oral intake have been studied. An approximate value of daily intake (AVDI) of the compound has been calculated. It has been shown that DHASS cannot be recommended as a food additive because its technologically effective concentrations are significantly higher than AVDI.
