Comments on a standardized version of Luria's tests.

Appreciation is expressed for the work of Golden's group in the selection of Luria's tests, the standardization of their administration, the collection of norms, and the evaluation of the reliability and validity of the Luria-Nebraska test battery. However, questions are raised concerning the ability of the test to efficiently handle topical diagnosis and to construct rehabilitation programs. Concern is expressed over the possible vulgarization of Luria's doctrine of functional systems and the loss of predictive power in Luria's tests through neglect of qualitative information and methodology. Suggestions are made as to how Luria's qualitative methodology might be incorporated in a standardized version of a neuropsychological examination.

Some ways of optimization of aphasics rehabilitation.

The main task of re-education in aphasia is the restoration of speech communicative function, which is characterized by activity, directionness and intentionality. These features can appear only in a society, with the best medium for its realization being a group or a society. Group lessons profit from the dynamics of the small social group in order to restore general and verbal communication. The group lesson also makes it possible to organize correctly, a verbal environment for aphasics. We have worked out methods of group rehabilitation based on some theoretical points of view, such as the conception of aphasia as a system and not as an isolated problem. This is comprised of these constituents: (1) problems of speech itself, (2) problems of speech relations with other mental processes, (3) problems of personality. We worked out three groups of methods: (1) methods influencing speech; (2) methods influencing other mental and status; (3) methods influencing patients personality, their emotions and wills.

[Speech and perception in acoustic-mnestic aphasia].

In clinical practice of brain lesions one of the frequently encountered disorders is the so-called acoustico-mnestic form of temporal aphasia, which was first described by A.R. Luria. However, its nature and the mechansim of speech disorders in this form of aphasia are still not clear, despite the theortical and practical significance of this problem. The convened experiments have demonstrated that disorders of such forms of speech as nominating, repeating and understanding in acoustico-mnestic aphasia emerges from visual and acoustical perception and its complicated connections with speech. Disorders of nominative functions of speech are related mainly to defects in the visual sphere, disorders of repeating and partially understanding speech - with the narrowing of the volume of acoustical perception. A possible pathophysiological mechanism of such speech disorders may be a decrease in the brain activity which leads to a substitution of simultaneous processes of perception by successional ones.

[Effect of branched-chain amino acids on nitrogen metabolism in irradiated rats].

The influence of a mixture of amino acids, with a branched chain, on the protein-nitrogen metabolism in irradiated animals was investigated. Repeated intraperitoneal administrations of the drug was shown to reduce the severity of radiation affection and to normalize nitrogen metabolism decreasing the postirradiation nitrogen losses by the organism.

[Localization of cortical lesions of the human brain and features of recognition of emotional expression].

The quantity of correct and erroneous identifications of human emotions was compared according to their intonational and mimical cues in the group of healthy persons (31 persons) and in the group of patients with lesions of different cortical parts of the left and right cerebral hemispheres (54 patients). It was established that the intactness of the temporal parts of both hemispheres is important for non-verbal recognition (choosing of appropriate photograph by the observer) of emotions by mimics. Correct verbal identification of emotions by mimics requires the integrity of the fronto-parietal parts of the left hemisphere while verbal identification of emotional intonation needs the intactness of the fronto-parietal parts of the right hemisphere. The significance of the temporal areas (especially of the right hemisphere) increases in case when the emotional colouring of the presented verbal communication does not coincide with its contents.
