Serum immunoglobulin (G, A and M) classes and IgG subclasses in sickle cell anaemia.

Serum concentrations of immunoglobulins G, A, M and IgG subclasses were determined by single radial immunodiffusion assay in a population of sickle cell anaemia patients resident in the tropics. Fifty apparently healthy subjects of haemoglobin genotype AA, of comparable age, sex and socioeconomic status (SES), and in the same environment as the patients, were included as controls. Three indices of morbidity in SCA, namely frequency of crisis, degree of anaemia and the number of organ complications, were used to derive a severity score for each patient; and thus categorize the subjects into severity groups. Immunoglobulin levels were then correlated with the indices of morbidity as well as the derived severity score. IgG, IgA, IgM, IgG1 and IgG3 levels were significantly raised in the SCA subjects when they were compared as a group with the controls. When separated into disease severity groups, the mildly affected patients were found to have virtually normal levels of immunoglobulins. Total IgG concentration and level of the IgG3 subclass showed significant positive correlation with frequency of crisis and derived severity score. Markedly raised levels of IgG and IgG3 may be predictive of severity in sickle cell anaemia.

Myotonia dystrophica: unusual features in a Labrador family.

A large family with myotonia dystrophica has been recognized in an isolated area of Labrador. The complete family tree showed 29 of 108 members to be affected, including an infant with the congenital form of the disease. The propositus presented with epiphora and reduced frequency of blinking, with incomplete closure--features that have not previously been stressed. Ten of the younger affected persons had no lens opacities, although most had systemic muscle signs. Slit-lamp examination was therefore not a valuable method of early detection of the disease in the family. Many of the women affected by myotonia dystrophica had obstetric complications, particularly hydramnios, premature onset of labour, necessity for cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal death. Hydramnios was associated in each instances with perinatal death. The fetus in each case of hydramnios may have had the gene for myotonia dystrophica. Immunoglobulin A concentrations were reduced significantly in 27 affected persons in comparison with 77 unaffected family members. There were no such differences for the other immunoglobulin classes.

Immunoglobulin allotypes in African populations. I. Gm--Am haplotypes in a Nigerian population.

The study of immunoglobulin allotypes in various Negro populations has shown that their polymorphism is different from that in other populations. This particularly true for the alleles of the gamma3 and alpha2 locus. Numerous investigations have been made in which a limited number of markers were determined. It seems to be of importance to compare the results of the determination of all markers known at present in different tribes from various African countries. Such information may ultimately lead to additional support for theories on the origin and migration of early African inhabitants. In this paper we resent the results of the study of the first of a series of studies on African populations.

Association between tonsil size and immunoglobulin concentrations.

Tonsil size and serum immunoglobulin (G, A, M and D) measurements were studied in 1049 individuals during a health survey on the West Coast of Newfoundland. The data were subjected to multifactorial analysis of variance. People with vestigial tonsils had the lowest mean IgG-levels, whereas those with naturally absent tonsils had the highest mean IgG-levels. There were also statistical differences in the mean IgA levels in relation to tonsil size. Individuals with vestigial tonsil sizes had the highest mean IgA levels whereas those who had had a tonsillectomy had the lowest. There are no tonsil size-related differences for IgM or IgD concentrations.
