Validation of soft bottom benthic habitats identified by single-beam acoustics.

Acoustic diversity charts were produced for a Portuguese soft bottom mid-shelf area, depth from 30 to 90 m, using a single-beam echo sounder coupled to the acoustic systems QTC VIEW Series IV and V. A similar acoustic pattern was identified by both systems, which, after ground-truth interpretation based in available sediment and biological data, established a preliminary spatial distribution model of the benthic habitats in this coastal area. However, some of the acoustic areas were interpreted using one or very few sediment and benthic samples. A specific validation survey was conducted a posteriori, in which the positioning of the sediment and benthic community sampling sites was based on the acoustic diversity previously identified. The results clearly confirm the benthic habitats distribution model suggested by the acoustic method, indicating a high potential for the use of such approach in the identification and mapping of large-scale soft bottom coastal shelf habitat diversity.

[The prevalence of measles, rubella, mumps and chickenpox antibodies in a population of health care workers].

We present an epidemiological and serological study in 409 health care workers randomly selected from the 4,103 workers of the University Hospital of Coimbra. A low level of susceptibility for measles (1.2%; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.15-2.23%), rubella (2.4%; 95% CI: 0.9-3.9) and varicella (3.2%; 95% CI: 1.5-4.7%) and a very high one for mumps (17.3%; 95% CI: 13.7-21.1%), were found. Ineffectiveness of historical information in predicting immune status to all of these diseases was found. An economic analysis of preventive measures was done. A mumps vaccination policy for health care workers is recommended and the opportunity of measles and rubella vaccination is discussed, facing the results of this study. Continuous monitoring of these diseases is needed anticipating the changes in epidemiology that are expected to occur with childhood vaccination.

To die with dignity.

This paper examines the conundrum facing an individual with a terminal disease who wishes to end his or her life in a manner that maintains a minimum of dignity. The State's interest versus the individual's right to live or die is examined in its various aspects. The interference by the State supplanting the Church as the authority that interprets the boundaries between life and death, with the individual losing his voice as well as his body to the impersonality of maintaining a life not worth living, is studied, as well as the implicit dangers when the freedom to decide when and who should die is measured against the present international economic situation. The need to listen to the language of the dying as well as to their need for a 'closure' is approached with a view to future study.
