A population analysis of the structure and variability of NOR in Salmo trutta by Ag, CMA3 and ISH.

An analysis of the variation in the number and location of rDNA genes has been carried out in two populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from Poland by using Ag and CMA3-staining, and rDNA in situ hybridisation. We observed an interindividual variation in arm number with NF = 100, 101, and 102. This variation was connected with the size polymorphism of the short (NOR-bearing) arm of the chromosome pair 11. The population studied showed a multichromosomal distribution of active NORs. Atypical Ag-NORs consisted of rDNA genes, as evidenced by rDNA-ISH. In addition to individuals with standard NORs, specimens with extra NORs as well as others with only one active NOR and single interphase nucleolus were observed.

Efficacy of a vitamin A-fortified wheat-flour bun on the vitamin A status of Filipino schoolchildren.

BACKGROUND: Wheat flour is a possible food vehicle for vitamin A fortification. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the efficacy of consumption of a vitamin A-fortified wheat-flour bun (pandesal) on the vitamin A status of school-age children. DESIGN: This was a double-masked clinical trial conducted in 396 and 439 children aged 6-13 y attending 4 rural schools in the Philippines. The children were randomly assigned to a vitamin A-fortified (experimental) or nonfortified (control) group. A 60-g vitamin A-fortified pandesal (containing approximately 133 microg retinol equivalents) or a nonfortified pandesal was consumed by the children 5 d/wk for 30 wk. Vitamin A status, hemoglobin concentration, anthropometric status, morbidity, and dietary intake were assessed at baseline and 30 wk later. A modified relative dose response (MRDR) was assessed in a subsample of 20% of the children ( approximately 75/group) with the lowest initial serum retinol concentration at the 30-wk follow-up. RESULTS: Baseline serum retinol significantly modified the effect of the intervention. The fortified group, whose initial serum retinol concentrations were below the median, had a 0.07 +/- 0.03-micromol/L greater improvement in serum retinol at the 30-wk follow-up than did the control group (P: = 0.02). Improved vitamin A status was also evident in the MRDR subsample. End-of-study differences in the MRDR showed that vitamin A- fortified pandesal intake decreased the percentage of children with inadequate liver vitamin A stores by 50% (15.3% compared with 28.6%; P: = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Daily consumption of vitamin A-fortified pandesal significantly improved the vitamin A status of Filipino school-age children with marginal-to-low initial serum retinol concentrations.

Sex determination in sciarid flies: a model for the control of differential X-chromosome elimination

In sciarids, all zygotes start development with the 3X;2A chromosome constitution, two of the three X chromosomes being of paternal origin. The elimination of either one or two paternal X chromosomes produces the X:A signal which determines development along the female (2X;2A) or male (X0;2A) pathway, respectively. A model is proposed in which a chromosomal factor (CF) positively interacts with the X chromosome(s) causing its/their elimination. The number of X chromosomes to be eliminated is controlled by a maternal factor (MF) which regulates the amount of free CF factor interacting with the X chromosomes. Imprinting refers to the inability of maternal X chromosomes to bind CF factor. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Interobserver variability in application of the revised Sydney classification for gastritis.

The Sydney classification for gastritis provides guidelines for histological grading of gastric biopsies. In an ongoing study of gastric preneoplastic lesions in Chiapas, Mexico, 7 biopsies from 150 patients (4 from the antrum and 3 from the body) were obtained during endoscopy and studied histologically. The first 74 endoscopy specimens were read independently by 2 general surgical pathologists. We assessed diagnostic concordance using kappa statistics. The 2 pathologists then jointly reviewed biopsies about which they had disagreed to reach a final diagnosis. A second group of 76 endoscopies was subsequently evaluated independently by the 2 pathologists, and concordance was again assessed. In the first group of biopsies, we found low concordance rates (Heliobacter pylori 0.59, acute inflammation 0.22, intestinal metaplasia 0.60, and atrophy 0.04). In the second group, of independently reviewed cases, there was better concordance (H pylori 0.77, acute inflammation 0.50, intestinal metaplasia 0.70, and atrophy 0.64). We presumed that use of the Sydney classification would result in minimal interpretational differences achieving ideal kappas greater than 0.80. Because pathology results are based on subjective interpretation of this classification, complete diagnostic agreement is practically impossible. Concordance by general surgical pathologists after joint review of cases was similar to that obtained by gastrointestinal pathologists.

Bipolarity in children.

Childhood and adolescent bipolar disorder have been less studied than adult onset bipolar illness. However, case reports of mania in childhood can be found as early as the mid 19th century. Historically, several factors have made the accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder in childhood difficult: clinical bias against the diagnosis of mania in children; low base rate of disorder; symptom overlap between bipolar disorder and other more prevalent childhood-onset psychiatric disorders; and developmental constraints and variability in clinical presentation. The epidemiology of juvenile-onset bipolar disorder remains an open topic for research. The disorder appears to increase in prevalence with advancing age until young adulthood. Reported phenomenology of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents indicates a highly variable presentation with a developmental trend towards increased resemblance to the adult phenotype with increasing age of onset. Diagnostic accuracy for the disorder is improved by adherence to diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM) criteria and may be aided by structured or semistructured diagnostic interviews. The course of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents has also received limited systematic study. However, research to date supports a clinical picture of a relapsing, recurrent illness with substantial morbidity. Systematic studies of pharmacologic treatments of acute mania in children and adolescents are limited in number and scope. Clinical justification for the use of acute antimanic treatments such as lithium and valproic acid is still based upon studies conducted in adults. There remains an immediate and significant need for additional research into all aspects of juvenile-onset bipolar disorder.

Opposite modulation of capsaicin-evoked substance P release by glutamate receptors.

Substance P and glutamate are present in primary afferent C-fibers and play important roles in persistent inflammatory and neuropathic pain. In the present study, we have examined whether activation of different glutamate receptor subtypes modulates the release of substance P evoked by the C-fiber selective stimulant capsaicin (1 microM) from rat trigeminal nucleus slices. The selective NMDA glutamate receptor agonist L-CCG-IV (1-10 microM) enhanced capsaicin-evoked substance P release about 100%. This facilitatory effect was blocked by 0.3 microM MK-801, a selective NMDA receptor antagonist. The metabotropic glutamate receptor agonists L-AP4 (group III) and DHPG (group I) (30-100 microM) inhibited capsaicin-evoked substance P release by approximately 60%. These inhibitory effects were blocked by the selective metabotropic glutamate receptor antagonist (+/-)-MCPG (5 microM). On the other hand, AMPA and kainate (0.1-10 microM), did not significantly affect capsaicin-evoked substance P release. Thus, substance P release from non-myelinated primary afferents, and possibly nociception, may be under the functional antagonistic control of some metabotropic and ionotropic glutamate receptor subtypes.

Genetic structure of brown trout, salmo trutta l., at the southern limit of the distribution range of the anadromous form

Genetic variation at 33 protein loci was investigated in 41 wild brown trout populations from four river basins in Galicia (northwest Spain) to analyse the amount and distribution of genetic diversity in a marginal area, located in the distribution limit of the anadromous form of this species. The genetic diversity detected within populations (H between 0 and 6%) lies within the range quoted for this species in previous reports. The Mino, the most southern river basin analysed, showed a significantly lower genetic diversity and the highest genetic differentiation among the river basins studied. The hierarchical gene diversity analysis showed high population differentiation in a restricted area (GST = 27%), mostly due to differences among populations within basins (GSC = 22%). The reduction of GST observed when the isolated samples were excluded from the analysis (GST = 17%) showed the importance of habitat fragmentation on the heterogeneity detected. Gene flow among populations was comparatively evaluated by three indirect methods, which in general revealed low figures of absolute number of migrants per generation, slightly higher than 1. The gene flow among basins reflected a positive relationship with geographical distance. This trend was confirmed by the significant correlation observed between geographical and genetic distances, including all population pairs, which suggests a component of isolation by distance in brown trout genetic structure. Nevertheless, the nonsignificant intrabasin correlation demonstrates the complexity of genetic relationships among populations in this species. The model of genetic structure in brown trout is discussed in the light of the results obtained.

Improving the efficiency of artificial selection: more selection pressure with less inbreeding.

The use of population genetic variability in present-day selection schemes can be improved to reduce inbreeding rate and inbreeding depression without impairing genetic progress. We performed an experiment with Drosophila melanogaster to test mate selection, an optimizing method that uses linear programming to maximize the selection differential applied while at the same time respecting a restriction on the increase in inbreeding expected in the next generation. Previous studies about mate selection used computer simulation on simple additive genetic models, and no experiment with a real character in a real population had been carried out. After six selection generations, the optimized lines showed an increase in cumulated phenotypic selection differential of 10.76%, and at the same time, a reduction of 19.91 and 60.47% in inbreeding coefficient mean and variance, respectively. The increased selection pressure would bring greater selection response, and in fact, the observed change in the selected trait was on average 31.03% greater in the optimized lines. These improvements in the selection scheme were not made at the expense of the long-term expectations of genetic variability in the population, as these expectations were very similar for both mate selection and conventionally selected lines in our experiment.

The epidemiology of hearing impairment in an Australian adult population.

BACKGROUND: This study measured the prevalence of hearing impairment, and major demographic factors that influence the prevalence, in a representative South Australian adult population sample aged > or = 15 years. METHODS: The study group was recruited from representative population surveys of South Australians. Participants in these surveys who reported a hearing disability were then recruited to an audiological study which measured air and bone conduction thresholds. In addition a sample of those people who reported no hearing disability were recruited to the audiological study. RESULTS: The data reported in this study are the first in Australia to assess the prevalence of hearing impairment from a representative population survey using audiological methods. The data show that 16.6% of the South Australian population have a hearing impairment in the better ear at > or = 25 dBHTL and 22.2% in the worse ear at the same level. The results obtained in this representative sample compare well with those obtained in the British Study of Hearing, although some differences were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, there are only a few studies worldwide that have audiologically assessed the impairment of hearing from a representative population sample. The overall prevalence of hearing impairment in Australia is similar to that found in Great Britain, although there are some differences between the estimates of severity of impairment and some sex differences. The corroboration of the two studies reinforces the status of hearing impairment as the most common disability of adulthood. The present study also showed that there are a large number of Australians who may benefit from a more systematic community-based rehabilitation programme including the fitting of hearing aids. Secondly, the study identified the need for health goals and targets for hearing to be based on an epidemiological approach to the problem.

Change from conventional haemodiafiltration to on-line haemodiafiltration.

BACKGROUND: On-line haemodiafiltration (HDF) is a technique which combines diffusion with elevated convection and uses pyrogen-free dialysate as a replacement fluid. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference between conventional HDF (1-3 l/h) and on-line HDF (6-12 l/h). METHODS: The study included 37 patients, 25 males and 12 females. The mean age was 56.5 +/- 13 years and duration of dialysis was 62.7 +/- 49 months. Three patients dropped out for transplantation, three patients died and three failed to complete the study period. Initially all patients were on conventional HDF with high-flux membranes over the preceding 34 +/- 32 months. Treatment was performed with blood flow (QB) 402 +/- 41 ml/min, dialysis time (Td) 187 min, dialysate flow (QD) 654 +/- 126 ml/min and replacement fluid (Qi) 4.0 +/- 2 l/session. Patients were changed to on-line HDF with the same filtre and dialysis time, QD 679 +/- 38 ml/min (NS), QB 434 +/- 68 ml/min (P < 0.05) and post-dilutional replacement fluid 22.5 +/- 4.3 l/session (P < 0.001). We compared conventional HDF with on-line HDF over a period of 1 year. Dialysis adequacy was monitored according to standard clinical and biochemical criteria. Kinetic analysis of urea and beta2-micro-globulin (beta2m) was performed monthly. RESULTS: Tolerance was excellent and no pyrogenic reactions were observed. Pre-dialysis sodium increased 2 mEq/l during on-line HDF. Plasma potassium, pre- and post-dialysis bicarbonate, uric acid, phosphate, calcium, iPTH, albumin, total proteins, cholesterol and triglycerides remained stable. The mean plasma beta2m reduction ratio increased from 56.1 +/- 8.7% in conventional HDF to 71.1 +/- 9.1% in on-line HDF (P < 0.001). The pre-dialysis plasma beta2m decreased from 27.4 +/- 8.1 to 24.2 +/- 6.5 mg/l (P < 0.01). Mean Kt/V (Daugirdas 2nd generation) was 1.35 +/- 0.21 in conventional HDF compared with 1.56 +/- 0.29 in on-line HDF (P < 0.01), Kt/Vr (Kt/V taking into consideration post-dialysis urea rebound) 1.12 +/- 0.17 vs 1.26 +/- 0.20 (P < 0.01), BUN time average concentration (TAC) 44.4 +/- 9 vs 40.6 +/- 10 mg/dl (P < 0.05) and protein catabolic rate (PCR) 1.13 +/- 0.22 vs 1.13 +/- 0.24 g/kg (NS). There was a significant increase in haemoglobin (10.66 +/- 1.1 vs 11.4 +/- 1.5) and haematocrit (32.2 +/- 2.9 vs 34.0 +/- 4.4%), P < 0.05, during the on-line HDF period, which allowed a decrease in the erythropoietin doses (3861 +/- 2446 vs 3232 +/- 2492 UI/week), (P < 0.05). Better blood pressure control (MAP 103.8 +/- 15 vs 97.8 +/- 11 mmHg, P < 0.01) and a lower percentage of patients requiring antihypertensive drugs were also observed. CONCLUSION: The change from conventional HDF to on-line HDF results in increased convective removal and fluid replacement (18 l/session). During on-line HDF treatment, dialysis dose was increased for both small and large molecules with a decrease in uraemic toxicity level (TAC). On-line HDF provided a better correction of anaemia with lower dosages of erythropoietin. Finally, blood pressure was easily controlled.

Establishement of the dorso-ventral pattern during embryonic development of drosophila melanogasater: a logical analysis

This report focuses on dorso-ventral patterning in the segmented region of the Drosophila melanogaster embryo. According to the concept of positional information, this pattern results from the different response of cells to the Dorsal-protein morphogen. This protein shows a distribution gradient along the dorso-ventral axis, with the highest concentration on the ventral side. Using the generalized logical formalism developed by R. Thomas and co-workers, the different cellular responses were analysed in terms of the intracellular loops between the regulatory genes. Two positive loops were found to be involved, each constituting a switch which can be acted upon by the Dorsal morphogen to determine the different cell types that make up the embryonic dorso-ventral pattern. The novelty in this use of generalized logical formalism is the employment of a multilevel variable to represent a morphogen gradient. The proposed model accounts for the essential qualitative effects of the Dorsal gradient in the dorso-ventral determination process. Three main conclusions may be drawn. Firstly, the gene twist needs to have two functional threshold concentrations, one for autoactivation and the other for activation of the gene snail. Secondly, the autoactivation threshold must be smaller than that which activates snail. Thirdly, the action of the gene snail on the maintenance function of the gene twist is crucial for cells to be able to choose between the mesoderm or neuroectoderm developmental pathways. Furthermore, it is predicted that if the gene snail shows autoregulation, this will not be crucial for the determination of the embryonic D-V pattern. Differences in sleep variables, blood adenosine, and body temperature between hypothyroid and euthyroid rats before and after REM sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation causes an increase in energy expenditure in animals. Thyroid gland function has been related to metabolic function, and this may be compromised in sleep manipulations. The objectives of the present study were the following: 1) to develop a model of hypothyroid rats by surgical removal of thyroid glands without extirpation of the parathyroid; 2) to observe the sleep architecture in euthyroid (Etx) and hypothyroid (Htx) rats, both before and after rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation (96 hours); 3) to challenge both groups (i.e. Etx and Htx) with REM sleep deprivation (96 hours) and then evaluate the effects on temperature; and 4) to measure the levels of adenosine and thyroid hormones in blood. One-month-old Wistar male rats (weight 90-100 g) were studied. The thyroid gland was removed, and the parathyroid glands were reimplanted within the neck muscle (Htx) under halothane anesthesia. A sham-operated group was also included (Etx). Four months later, the animals were studied according to the following protocols. Protocol 1: Animals of both groups (i.e. Etx and Htx) were implanted for sleep recordings. After a baseline polysomnography, these animals were REM sleep deprived by the platform method (96 hours). Protocol 2. An intraperitoneal temperature transducer was placed into animals of both groups under deep halothane anesthesia. They were studied at baseline, during 96 hours of REM sleep deprivation, and on the rebound period. Protocol 3: Plasma thyroid hormones [T3, T4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)] and plasma adenosine were determined in both groups. Results of protocol 1 indicated that the main difference observed in Htx rats during the baseline sleep was an increase in delta sleep (slow-wave sleep 2) and a reduction in waking time compared with Etx animals. REM sleep rebound after 96 hours of REM sleep deprivation was similar in both groups. In protocol 2, the main finding was that Htx animals had reduced body temperature. A significant difference in body temperature between Etx and Htx animals was found mainly during lights-on period. REM sleep deprivation in the Etx group produced an increase in body temperature. Htx animals showed the opposite effect, with a reduction in body temperature during and after REM sleep deprivation. In protocol 3, the main findings were that Htx animals exhibited a significant reduction in blood thyroid hormones (T3, T4), and that they also had high levels of plasma adenosine. REM sleep deprivation produces changes in temperature regulation. The increase in body temperature during REM sleep deprivation may require thyroid integrity. Absence of the thyroid gland does not seem to influence REM sleep recovery after its deprivation. The high plasma adenosine levels found in the Htx group may explain the increase in delta sleep in this group.

A tinnitus problem questionnaire in a clinic population.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate difficulties associated with tinnitus in a large sample of patients using an open-ended problem questionnaire. DESIGN: Four hundred seventy-three unselected patients referred to the Tinnitus Clinic of the Welsh Hearing Institute (1986 through 1991) completed the Tinnitus Problem Questionnaire (Tyler & Baker, 1988). Before clinical assessment, patients were invited to list problems that they associated with their tinnitus in order of importance in an open-ended questionnaire. Their responses were coded into 45 categories. The responses of 39 patients who only described their tinnitus were excluded, leaving unselected responses from 436 patients, 224 women and 212 men, whose average age was 57.1 yr. The questionnaire elicited an average 3.78 responses per patient (range 1 to 12). RESULTS: The 30 most common difficulties attributed to tinnitus are described. There was broad agreement between the problems reported in this clinic-based study and those reported by a self-help group sample (Tyler & Baker, 1983). CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of these responses into groups based on psychological (30.1%), hearing (23.5%), health (20.7%), sleep (14.6%), and situational (11.1%) difficulties highlights the need for recognition of the global consequences of tinnitus to many patients and for a broadly based tinnitus management model.

Interaction of mercury with human and bovine milk proteins.

The interaction of inorganic mercury with human and bovine milk proteins was studied. Gel filtration chromatography of skimmed milk and whey incubated with mercury showed that, in human milk, mercury was mainly bound to caseins, while a low proportion was bound to albumin. In bovine milk, mercury was associated with two protein fractions, caseins and beta-lactoglobulin. Furthermore, it was shown by electrophoresis that mercury induced the formation of dimers of beta-lactoglobulin. Thus, in both human and bovine milk, mercury possessed greater ability to interact with milk proteins than to the low-molecular-weight substances. However, the pattern of mercury distribution was different between the milk of these two species.

Estradiol, progesterone and steroid receptors. Benign cycling versus malignant non cycling cells.

Levels of estradiol and progesterone from blood together with oestrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PgR) from breast tissue were studied from a total of 2500 data bank cases of breast neoplastic disease. We report here, 340 premenopausal women with recorded menstrual cycle data which enabled the study of the effect of peripheral hormone variation on ER and PgR with respect to cycle phase. The findings were also correlated with 30 immunohistochemical specimens. In the specimens with benign neoplasm (141 cases, age 28 +/- 18 years) the ER levels were low (9.2+/-9.4 fmol/mg protein) as in normal breast tissue, whereas PgR levels were high ( 76+/-102.4 fmol/mg protein). Both ER and PgR levels decreased in association with the peak of blood progesterone of the early secretory phase. In the 15 cases of benign neoplasm from the luteinic phase studied by immunohistochemistry there were few ER positive cells (29+/-15%) which were small (265+/-27 pixels) and faintly stained (MOD: 34+/-3UA), while the PgR positive cells were more numerous (79+/-15%), bigger (377+/-70 pixels), strongly stained (MOD: 48+/-5UA), and centrally located in the breast ducts. The differences in size and optical density were statistically significant indicating that both receptors are expressed by different cells. The cell cycle dependence of these differences is discussed. In the series of malignant neoplasms (199 cases, age 41+/-6 years), ER and PgR cytosol levels were both generally high (ER: 38+/-75.9, PgR: 86.6+/-137), and did not show variations due to the menstrual cycle, while blood progesterone, PgR, and the percentage of ER positive cases increased during the menstrual cycle. The 15 malignant cases in the luteinic phase showed, through immunohistochemistry, that size and staining intensities of receptor positive cells were similar to the other 199 cases and were not found to be directly influenced by hormonal activity related to the menstrual cycle. Comparisons between benign and malignant specimens showed significant biochemical and immunohistochemical differences in the degree of ER positivity while, on the contrary, PgR levels were similar.

Cadmium uptake by Caco-2 cells. Effect of some milk components.

The effect of some milk components on the cellular uptake of cadmium has been studied using a human intestinal cell line (Caco-2). Cadmium uptake by Caco-2 cells increased with the concentration of this metal in the culture medium, in a saturable way. These cells were exposed to different concentrations of cadmium and the synthesis of metallothionein was studied by a cadmium-saturation method. The levels of metallothionein increased with the cadmium concentration in the medium up to 20 microM of metal. Supplementation of the culture medium with 10% bovine milk caused a 25% decrease in the uptake of cadmium with respect to that internalized by the cells maintained in the culture medium alone. However, the uptake of cadmium from the medium supplemented with 10% human milk was similar to that with serum-free medium. beta-Lactoglobulin interacted with cadmium when studied by equilibrium dialysis, showing a stoichiometric binding constant of 5 x 10(4) l/mol. Interaction of lactoferrin with cadmium, however, was negligible. When Caco-2 cells were incubated in culture medium containing lactoferrin, cadmium uptake decreased with respect to that observed incubating the cells in a medium containing beta-lactoglobulin or in the free-protein medium. The inhibitory effect of lactoferrin on the uptake of cadmium might be due to a reduction of the cell surface charge, through its binding to the membrane.

Bilateral internal mammary artery grafting in women: a 21-year experience.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery bypass grafting traditionally has carried a higher mortality rate in women than in men. It remains the leading cause of death in women despite major advances in diagnosis and treatment over the past 2 decades. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to identify risk factors that adversely influence hospital mortality, morbidity, and long-term clinical results in women undergoing bilateral internal mammary artery grafting. From January 1972 through October 1994, 327 consecutive women received bilateral internal mammary artery grafts and supplemental vein grafts. Patient age ranged from 32 to 84 years (mean, 65.7 years). There were 262 patients (80.1%) with three-vessel disease; 71 (21.7%) had substantial (> 50%) stenosis of the left main coronary artery, 65 (19.9%) had a moderately reduced (0.30 to 0.50) ejection fraction, and 11 (3.4%) had a severely reduced (< 0.30) ejection fraction. Preoperatively, 316 patients (96.6%) were in New York Heart Association class III or IV. RESULTS: There were 1,016 coronary artery grafts (mean, 3.1 per patient). The overall hospital mortality rate was 3.4% (11 of 327). Postoperative complications included myocardial infarction in 18 patients (5.5%), stroke in 5 (1.5%), pulmonary insufficiency in 11 (3.4%), reoperation for bleeding in 7 (2.1%), and sternal infection in 8 (2.4%). Independent predictors of operative death were postoperative cardiac arrest (p < 0.001), use of intraaortic balloon pump (p < 0.001), and reoperation for bleeding (p < 0.050). Follow-up was completed on 316 hospital survivors (100%) and ranged from 6 months to 21 years (mean, 5.1 years). Actuarial survival (mean +/- standard error of the mean) was 90.5% +/- 1.9% at 5 years and 65.6% +/- 6.1% at 10 years. At follow-up, 252 patients (94.0%) were asymptomatic in New York Heart Association class I, and 12 (4.5%) were in class II. CONCLUSIONS: This longitudinal study demonstrates that bilateral internal mammary artery grafting, though technically demanding, can be achieved in women with low hospital mortality and morbidity rates. Patients experienced reduced late cardiac events, excellent functional improvement, and enhanced long-term survival.
