Karyology of the Savi pine vole, Microtus savii (De Sélys-Longchamps, 1838) (Rodentia, Arvicolidae): G-, C-, DA/DAPI-, and AluI-bands.

Specimens of the Savi pine vole (Microtus savii) were collected from three localities in central (Pisa and Viterbo) and southern Italy (Rosarno, Calabria) and were karyotyped using G-, C-, DA/DAPI-, and AluI-banding. All karyotypes had 2n = 54 chromosomes and seemingly identical autosomal banding. The sex chromosomes of the southern Italian specimens, M. savii brachycercus, showed additional large blocks of heterochromatin. In the northern specimens, M. savii savii, the X chromosome is metacentric, whereas in the southern specimens of M. savii brachycercus the X chromosome is a much larger submetacentric chromosome, and the Y chromosome is more than twice the size of the Y in the northern specimens. DA/DAPI staining reveals three levels of fluorescent intensity in the sex chromosomes of the Calabrian specimens. The sex chromosomes of M. savii brachycercus also have the only AluI bands seen in either chromosome set. These data suggest a heterogeneous origin and composition of the C-band regions of these chromosomes. Preliminary data suggest that fertility is reduced in crosses between the two karyomorphs.

Atypical radiographic appearances of tuberculous granulomas of bone.

We present four adults with tuberculous granulomas of bone. In three patients the granuloma involved the end of a long bone. The vertebral body and the right pedicle of the 10th thoracic vertebra were involved in the fourth patient. In all four the adjacent joint or the disk space was spared; hence the lesions mimicked bone neoplasms. Sclerotic changes, periosteal reaction and sequestration were present in three patients. Three of the four patients were not white. Since histologic specimens may not reveal mycobacteria, radiologists should alert orthopedic surgeons to the need to obtain material for culture at the time of biopsy of lesions that might be unusual manifestations of skeletal tuberculosis.

Radial manometric study of the anal canal: preliminary results.

The pressure profile of the anal canal results from the effects of several muscles mainly the internal and external anal sphincter and the puborectalis. The preliminary results of radial manometric study of the anal canal carried out in 36 healthy volunteers, are reported. Based on the obtained results it is concluded that the anal canal shows a statistically significant difference in the radial distribution of pressure. The anatomo-physiologic mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, are discussed.

[Leydig-cell tumors of the testicle].

Leydig's cells tumor account for 1-2% of all testicular tumors. The authors report a rare case of benign Leydig's cells tumor in a young man with gynecomastia. They examine the embryogenesis, the hormonal modifications, the criteria of malignancy, the treatment and results. They present a review of the literature pertaining to this rare tumors.
