Human lens transparence in high-myopic subjects.

The possibility of a relation between high myopia and lens opacity was studied. For this research, the Lens Opacity Meter 701 was used. The lens opacity values measured in 91 high-myopic eyes were compared with those measured in a control group of 106 emmetropic eyes. This comparison showed that myopic had always higher lens opacity values than emmetropic ones, and this result was statistically significant after the age of 20.

Adolescent

[Asthenopia and monitor characteristics].

An epidemiological survey on 30,000VDT operators has been carried out to evaluate the relationship between asthenopia and monitor characteristics. A VDU operator has been classified as asthenopeic if he complained about at least two of the following ten symptoms: headache, tearing, eye smarting, blurred vision, double vision, ocular itching, photophobia, blinking, nausea, eye heaviness. Visual discomfort has been related to 1) the presence of flicker; the possibility to regulate, 2) brightness, 3) height; and 4) inclination of monitor. Asthenopia has resulted statistically correlated to the presence of flicker and to the impossibility of regulating height and inclination of monitor for both sexes. The possibility to regulate monitor brightness has not determined a reduction of visual discomfort either in men or in women.

[Cofactorial glaucoma--causes].

The various types of glaucoma may be classified more accurately by studying the structure and physiology of the trabecular meshwork. Seen in this light, the development of glaucoma is linked to "extrinsic" and "intrinsic" factors. The intrinsic factors represent the predisposition to glaucoma; the secondary factors intervene in a secondary phase, creating a resistance to aqueous humor outflow. In so-called primary glaucoma the predisposition plays a decisive role, while the extrinsic factors are not so important. In cofactorial glaucoma the predisposition is only of slight significance, while the extrinsic factors are extremely important. In true secondary glaucoma predisposition plays a minimal role, while the extrinsic factors are all the more important. In correlated glaucomas the predisposition may be extremely relevant, but the extrinsic factors which represent the key causes are still unknown. Several types of glaucoma are described as examples.

Glaucoma

"Minor" application of soft contact lenses.

Some of the minor applications of soft contact lenses are believed to be more important than was hitherto thought. Soft contact lenses may be used to potentiate the therapeutic action of drugs, for the pleoptic treatment of ambylopic patients, for determining the visual field in aphakia and high myopia, and for the treatment of corneal wounds and descemetocoele.

Amblyopia

[Clinical and therapeutic aspects of haemorrhagic glaucoma (author's transl)].

Haemorrhagic glaucoma is a clinical syndrome. It is in fact the terminal stage of many very different ocular conditions. During the evolution towards the hypertensive haemorrhagic stage two conditions are essential: venous stasis and neoformation of capillary vessels. These factors have different incidence, but they are always present and affect each other. On the base of the pathogenesis the therapy of haemorrhagic glaucoma is more effective the sooner it is applied. When the syndrome is clear-cut the therapeutic possibilities are very poor. For these cases the authors suggest the operation of diathermotrabeculectomy whose surgical procedure is detailed.
