[A comparative analysis of rebif 22-mcg and copaxone efficacy in multiple sclerosis].

A comparative analysis of efficacy and tolerability of such immunomodulating compounds as rebif 22-mcg and copaxone used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis is presented. The analysis was based on the data obtained in the 2-year study of copaxone (145 patients) and rebif 22-mcg (74 patients) therapy carried out in the Neurology Institute, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

[Results of a multicenter study of Rebif-22 mcg administration in Russia].

The results of multicenter study of Rebif 22 micrograms in Russia have been reported. 167 multiple sclerosis patients have received Rebif 22 micrograms three times a week for 1 year. This study provides evidence for reduction of the relapse rate in patients with relapsing/remitting and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. The tendency to the decrease of the severity of relapses, less need for steroid use and the decrease of EDSS score in patients with relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis have been shown. In general Rebif 22 micrograms was tolerated well.

[Progressive course of multiple sclerosis].

The mechanisms of MS progression are now studied with great attention and the treatment strategies at this stage of MS are widely discussed. The clinical peculiarities, genetic profile, immunological and biochemical changes, data of pathomorphological and MRI studies are discussed in this review. The data of own original immunological, biochemical and MRI studies, comparing relapsing-remitting and progressive MS course are presented. The role of axonal degeneration in the disease progression and data of the last trial of beta-interferons in secondary progressive MS are also discussed.

[Neurotransmitter changes in multiple sclerosis].

Elevated levels of norepinephrine and of excitatory amino acids (glutamate, aspartate) were observed in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis while there were elevated content of glutamine, asparagine and glycine in their blood. An important point concerning these results was the relation between biochemical indices and the character of neurological symptoms, their severity as well as the course of the disease. The role of neurotransmitters in pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and particularly in biochemical mechanisms of the relation between nervous and immune system that underlie the development of neurological deficiencies is suggested.

Changes in neurotransmitters in multiple sclerosis.

Patients with multiple sclerosis were found to have increased cerebrospinal fluid, noradrenaline, and excitatory amino acid (glutamate and aspartate) levels, with increased blood glutamine, asparagine, and glycine levels. An association was found between these biochemical parameters and the nature and severity of neurological symptoms, as well as with the course of the disease. Neurotransmitters are proposed to have a role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis, particularly in the biochemical mechanisms of the relationship between the nervous and immune systems, as well as in the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the development of neurological deficit.
