Short note: Behavioral genetic research: achievements and concerns.

Behavioral genetic research is advancing rapidly. This can result in the improvement in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. However, humankind may not be able to use reasonably the results of research into the genetic basis of behavior, and genetic discoveries may lead to the violation of human rights. The author calls for international cooperation in order to make sure that the results of genetic research will be used for the sake of people.

The role of the endogenous opioid system in the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders.

The author suggests that anxiety disorders are related to a deficiency in the endogenous opioid system. The author classifies deficiencies of the endogenous opioid system as congenital or acquired, and also as real or relative. Individuals with 'real deficiency' cannot function adequately in any situations, including situations which are natural for human beings. Persons with 'relative deficiency' are unable to function adequately under circumstances which are unnatural for humans: their 'adaptational reserve' is insufficient. The use of opioid substances and alcohol is a form of self-medication to reduce anxiety. Acupuncture and its variations, psychotherapy, and the administration of placebo can decrease anxiety because these therapeutic maneuvers activate the endogenous opioid system.

The role of the endogenous opioid system in the effects of acupuncture on mood, behavior, learning, and memory.

Ancient and contemporary papers report that acupuncture and its variations have a considerable effect on psychological state and behavior. Evidence from experimental and clinical studies suggests that acupuncture and its variations exert a strong influence on endogenous opioids in the brain, and that the endogenous opioid system is involved in various mental functions. The author suggests that the endogenous opioid system can play the key role in the mediation of the effects of acupuncture and its variations on mood, behavior, learning, and memory. Clinical implications of this suggestion are discussed.

Autistic disorder and the endogenous opioid system.

The elevated activity of brain opioids has been implicated in the pathogenesis of autistic disorder. Research on plasma and cerebrospinal fluid levels of endogenous opioids in subjects with autistic disorder has produced conflicting results. The author suggests that the level of brain opioid activity is a contributing but not the determining factor in the pathogenesis of autistic disorder. The author further suggests that the development of autistic disorder is related to the interaction between the endogenous opioid system and various neurotransmitter systems in the brain.

The placebo effect on mood and behavior: the role of the endogenous opioid system.

Evidence from clinical and experimental studies has shown that placebos influence mood and behavior, that endogenous opioids are involved in the placebo effect, and that the endogenous opioid system is related to psychological events. Recent studies have also demonstrated that the endogenous opioid system is closely connected with other neurotransmitter systems in the brain. The author suggests that the interaction between the endogenous opioid system and different neurotransmitter systems in the brain mediates the placebo effect on mood and behavior of both healthy and sick people.

Effects of natural and man-made electric/electromagnetic fields on human health: a possible mechanism.

Studies and observations have shown that natural and artificial electric/electromagnetic fields affect human health. The author suggests that these fields can alter the state of acupuncture points, and produce an acupuncture-like effect. The author further suggests that the influence of natural and man-made electric/electromagnetic fields on human health is mediated by electrical processes in acupuncture points.
