Blood magnesium findings in osteoporosis.

Serum and erythrocyte Mg and Ca were examined in 60 patients with osteoporosis; 33 patients suffered from senile osteoporosis, 18 patients from postmenopausal and 9 from medicamentous osteoporosis. The biochemical signs of chronic magnesium deficiency were present in the first two groups due to lowering erythrocyte magnesium. The tendency to blood calcium disturbance was demonstrated in the third group.

Blood zinc findings in osteoporosis.

Blood Zn was examined in 33 patients with senile osteoporosis, 18 patients with postmenopausal and 9 patients with medicamentous osteoporosis. The findings differ in the first two groups compared with the third one. There are also various relations between blood Zn and blood Mg in these groups.

[The importance of magnesium in orthopedics. VI. The importance of magnesium in the treatment of ectopic calcification and ossification].

In a five-year investigation the authors demonstrate their results with Mg treatment in 54 patients with ectopic calcifications and ossifications. Based on the results of experimental work, where the inhibiting action of Mg ions on calcium phosphate precipitation was proved in vitro as well as in vivo, the authors treated by means of local MgSO4 injections and oral administration of Mg lactate 17 patients with ossifying myositis, 16 with calcareal bursitis, 4 patients with paraosteoarthropathy of the elbow after craniocerebral injuries, 6 calcifications of the hip joint after operations and 5 calcifications in the insertions of tendons and ligaments. In all instances diminution to complete disappearance of the calcificates and ossificates was observed. The authors achieved also very favourable functional results. In the majority of patients the mobility in adjacent joints was restored. Clinical experience indicates that Mg prevents the development or suppresses further growth of ectopic calcifications and ossifications. During the formation of the ossificate, which is still immature, Mg causes diminution and sometimes complete absorption of the immature bone.

Ischemic and hyperventilation tests in 28 twins.

We examined ischemic and hyperventilation tests in 14 pairs of healthy twins. In 3 of them we found different results of positivity or negativity of these tests. Women had signs of higher irritability of the wave M than men as concerned latency, amplitude, duration; the strength of stimulus was significantly lower in females than in males.

Parameters of the wave M in 554 patients suspected of tetanic syndrome but with negative ischemic and hyperventilation tests.

We examined 554 patients with clinical suspicion of tetanic syndrome whose ischemic and hyperventilation tests were negative. We analysed the wave M before carrying out the tests with the following parameters: latency, amplitude, duration, shape and strength of stimulus. We could register higher irritability in women, in young persons, in course of years. We cannot register conspicuous changes during year seasons; the amplitude and the strength of stimulus were in middle correlation. We try to explain the significance of the polyphasic shape of the wave M where the desynchronization and repetitive activity are supposed to be the main causes. The relation between men and women was 1:2.2. Most patients were in the middle age group.

Parameters of the wave M in 398 patients with tetanic syndrome proved with positive ischemic or hyperventilation tests.

398 patients with clinical signs of tetanic syndrome were examined. Their ischemic and/or hyperventilation tests were positive. The parameters of the wave M were analysed i.e. latency, amplitude, duration, shape and strength of stimulus. The signs of higher irritability of the peripheral nervous system were found out in women; they diminished during age. The ratio between men and women was 1:3.6. The significant differences were determined between the groups of negative and positive tests. In the group of positive tests we noticed the dependence of the wave M on the positivity of ischemic, hyperventilation tests, on amount of multiplets during the ischemic test, on the seasons of year and on the course of the period of years (1970-1974 and 1975 to 1978). The highest irritability was determined in the subgroup of hyperventilation tetany and in the subgroup with cramps provoked during ischemic tests.

[The significance of magnesium in orthopedics. V. Magnesium in osteoporosis].

The authors submit an investigation of 60 patients with senile, post-menopausal and drug-induced osteoporosis. Using the method of absorption spectrophotometry, they found a reduced level of Mg in red blood cells in 63.6% of senile, 66.7% postmenopausal and only in 22.2% drug-induced osteoporoses. Also the mean level of red cell magnesium was significantly lower in the group of senile (1.94 mmol) and postmenopausal (1.85 mmol) osteoporosis as compared with drug-induced osteoporosis (2.25 mmol). The authors revealed moreover that the level of red cell magnesium in the former two groups declines in proportion to the severity of osteoporosis and correlates thus with the clinical and X-ray finding. For treatment of osteoporisis the authors used magnesium lactate alone (in 37 patients) and combined with sodium fluoride (in 23 patients). In the majority of patients they had very favourable results. Based on laboratory and therapeutic results, consistent with data in the experimental literature, the authors assume that magnesium as a catalyst of bone metabolism and as one of the most important factors controlling the formation of bone matrix and its mineralization plays a significant role in the aetiopathogenesis of senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis. The authors assume that Mg deficiency which is increasing in recent years in soil as well as in foodstuffs and water may be the main cause of the increasing number of patients with osteoporosis in civilized countries. Magnesium should have its firm place not only in therapy but also in prevention of the majority of osteoporosis.

Metabolism of magnesium and zinc in patients treated with antiepileptic drugs and with magnesium lactate.

Fourty-nine patients were examined with epileptic seizures and values of serum and erythrocyte magnesium (sMg, RBC Mg) and serum zinc (sZn) were determined. Chronic deficiency in RBC Mg and sZn were confirmed. The percentage of patients with decreased RBC Mg increased with the time of antiepileptic treatment; significant lowering occurs after 5 years of treatment for RBC Mg and within 5 years for sZn. Various antiepileptics and their combinations have different effects on the degree of the lowering. The therapy of magnesium lactate produces significantly higher RBC Mg and sZn. The clinical, electroencephalographical and biochemical findings are improved.
