Proposal for detection of QED vacuum nonlinearities in Maxwell's equations by the use of waveguides.

We present a novel method for detecting nonlinearities, due to quantum electrodynamics through photon-photon scattering, in Maxwell's equation. The photon-photon scattering gives rise to self-interaction terms which are similar to the nonlinearities due to the polarization in nonlinear optics. These self-interaction terms vanish in the limit of parallel propagating waves, but if, instead of parallel propagating waves, the modes generated in waveguides are used, there will be a nonzero total effect. Based on this idea, we calculate the nonlinear excitation of new modes and estimate the strength of this effect. Furthermore, we suggest a principal experimental setup.

Mechanical model for the plasma maser effect.

A Fermi-like pinball model is proposed for the nonlinear plasma maser effect, or turbulent bremsstrahlung, in the nonlinear interaction of plasma particles and waves. The model consists of a system of many noninteracting particles bouncing elastically between two oscillating walls. The walls act as energy and momentum sources and sinks for the particles, analogous to the wave fields in a weakly turbulent plasma. The oscillation amplitudes and frequencies of the walls determine the dynamics and distribution of the particles. The resulting asymptotic velocity distributions agree qualitatively with existing weak turbulence theories. It is also found that the second wall, which simulates the effect of the nonresonant wave-particle interaction, can destroy correlations in the particle dynamics and lead to the formation of a high-energy tail in the velocity distribution.

Comment on "Electromagnetic convective cells in a nonuniform dusty plasma".

Recently, Saleem and Haque [Phys. Rev. E 60, 7612 (1999)] concluded that in the presence of a perturbed electron current parallel to an external magnetic field, the dispersion relation of the electrostatic convective cell and the magnetostatic modes is not modified. In the present Comment, the properties of electromagnetic as well as electrostatic waves in a nonuniform dusty magnetoplasma are reexamined, to demonstrate that Eq. (13) of the paper by Saleem and Haque as well as their conclusions are erroneous.

Surface waves in strongly irradiated dusty plasmas

High-frequency surface waves at the interface between two dusty plasmas subject to radiation are considered. Ultraviolet radiation with energy flux larger than the photoelectric work function of the dust surface causes photoemission of electrons. The dust charge and the overall charge balance of the plasma are thus modified. The dispersion properties of the surface waves are investigated for three parameter regimes distinguished by the charging mechanisms in the two plasmas. It is shown that photoemission can significantly affect the plasma and the surface waves.
