Attenuation of diabetic retinopathy by the molecular chaperone-inducer amino acid analogue canavanine in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

The effect of canavanine treatment on the electroretinograms of healthy and streptozotocin-diabetic rats was studied. The characteristic amplitudes of the a-wave, W2 and W3 oscillatory potentials were markedly diminished in the 2-week streptozotocin-diabetic rats compared with those of the control rats. In contrast, the amplitudes of all the responses of the canavanine-pretreated streptozotocin-diabetic rats were practically indistinguishable from those of the control animals. Our results prompt further investigations for the use of amino acid analogues and other inducers of molecular chaperones in easing the chronic consequences of diabetes such as retinopathy.

The importance of incision-planning and operation technique during organ-preserving and radical operations in the case of patients with mammary cancer.

The authors place a great deal of emphasis on the application of plastic surgery principles in the course of all their operations, especially mammary operations: the incision planning respecting the lines of strength, the atraumatic operation technique (sharp preparation, high-frequency electrocoagulation, tensionless wound closure, and suction drainage from a separate opening). In their organ-preserving operations the radial incision recommended by Veronese is avoided, and the axilla is exposed separately. They do not perform their radical mammary operations according to the customary method (Auchincloss, Patey) either. If necessary they accomplish the tensionless closure of the wound by means of individual incision planning and the preservation (rotation and sliding) of the intact skin of the breast, which is the precondition of the reconstruction that might be performed subsequently. In the course of the follow-up of 295 operations carried out in this manner excellent or good results were obtained in 83% as far as aesthetics and functionality were concerned. Lymphedema did not develop in a single case on account of operation technique.

Peritoneal benign cystic mesothelioma.

A case of a benign cystic peritoneal mesothelioma is reported. A 25-year-old woman presented a 8-year history of recurrent tumor and five operations because of that. On the basis of this case and of 18 cases proved by electron microscopy reported by others, the clinicopathological features and the problems of differential diagnosis are discussed. The ultrastructural examination is essential for the diagnosis of cystic mesothelioma.

Advantages and drawbacks of some ERG stimulation and data-processing methods.

In each group of diseases, electroretinographic (ERG) diagnosis requires optimal stimulation parameters and detection techniques that clearly evidence any deviations from normal values. Television tube light stimulator assemblies and stimulation techniques applying methods of the control theory are very suitable for the dynamic separation of gross ERG components. The advantages and drawbacks of flicker ERG, frequency-characteristic methods and the frequency ranges that provide useful information in data processing are discussed.
