[Characteristics of the course of chronic bronchitis in patients in the sanatorium-health resort stage of treatment].

Use of the new laboratory diagnostic methods for examining 1352 chronic bronchitis patients made it possible to establish specific features and changes that resulted from a sanatorium-spa treatment of tissue inflammatory reactions, their intensity, the degree of manifestation in the bronchovascular and alveolar-vascular pulmonary barriers, the state of resistance to recurrences, the interconnection between bronchus obstruction and inflammatory and allergic processes, and adreno- and cholinopathy. A mutual connection was found to exist between the above characteristics of chronic bronchitis.

[Characteristics of the course of bronchitis in allergy].

The course of bronchitis with clinical manifestations of allergy is characterized by certain cytochemical features which (as compared with bronchitis without allergy) show an increase of deoxyribonucleic acid, increased permeability of the intracellular membranes of polynuclear leucocytes and lymphocytes, reduction of the content of cationic proteins and activity of acid phosphatase in the polynuclear leucocytes of the blood.

[Diagnostic potentials of studying the ESR].

Specific (tuberculin, adrenalin) and nonspecific (ultrasound, phenol) in vitro exposures of the blood improve the diagnostic informativeness of the red cell sedimentation rate measurements. Similarity of the results of measurements, carried out by the suggested and the reference techniques in more than 550 patients, gives grounds to employ the suggested modifications of tuberculin diagnosis, of detecting a beta-adrenodependent bronchospasm, of assessing the pattern and the activity of an inflammation in pneumonias. Practical and statistical rationale for the suggested methods is given.

Blood Sedimentation↗

[Improving the informativeness of studying the content of cationic proteins in blood leukocytes in inflammatory diseases of the lungs].

In vitro exposure of the blood to UV irradiation and ultrasound changes the content of cationic proteins in polynuclear leukocytes. The difference (vs. the intact blood) is diagnostically valuable, for it helps locate the inflammation in the lungs, determine the origin of the bronchial spasm, and predict resistance to relapses of pulmonary inflammations.

Blood Proteins↗

[The best ways of the control of inflammatory diseases of the lung].

Three approaches to optimal control of inflammatory diseases of the lungs are described. The first approach includes improvement of the diagnostic procedure. The second approach is based on development of new complexes of drug therapy and organization of nondrug therapy. The third approach is prophylactic. The main goals of the approaches are formulated.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

[Evaluation of the efficacy of the treatment of patients with chronic bronchitis].

The authors emphasize informative inadequacy of traditional laboratory diagnosis and anti-inflammatory efficacy of treatment of chronic bronchitis. It is proposed to use a new method (Sigma-ESR) reflecting the activity and specificity of tissue processes in the lungs during inflammation that substantiates objectification of diagnosis. The technique is described.

Bronchitis↗

[Relation between immune and inflammatory reactions].

Lung inflammation in Wistar rats was induced by transthoracic inoculation of live and inactivated cultures of Staphylococcus aureus P209. In the former case the rats received phitohemagglutinin and cyclophosphane. A specific nature of inflammatory processes in these conditions was confirmed by histological, histo-cytochemical and bacterioscopic indexes; humoral and cellular immune responses being similar. The data show no direct correlation between inflammatory and immune reactions.

[Histochemical characteristics of the neural apparatus of the bronchi in different states of tonus].

Composite histoenzymochemical characteristics of the nervous apparatus of bronchi in vagotomy, desympathetization, histamine shock, and development of pneumonia experimentally and clinically were obtained. The development of bronchospasm under the above effects and in pneumonia was found to be accompanied by decreases in the activity of acetylcholinesterase, the content of noradrenaline, a high content of nucleoproteins, polysaccharides, a high activity of oxidoreductases in different structures of the nervous apparatus of the bronchi. Bronchodilatation was accompanied by a decrease of all the above-mentioned indicators of the status of the nervous apparatus as well as destructive changes in its elements. The condition of production and utilization of the cholinergic and adrenergic mediators is discussed on the basis of the data obtained.

[Local and general changes in inflammatory lung diseases].

Composite histo-cytoenzymochemical characteristics of local (pulmonary tissue) and general (polymorphonuclear leukocytes, PMNL, blood lymphocytes) changes in inflammatory lung diseases were obtained. Local and general changes were found to be interrelated and to reflect morphological and clinical features of inflammatory lung diseases. Differential diagnosis between acute and protracted bronchopneumonia, chronic pneumonia, bronchoectases is possible on the basis of the condition of PMNL and blood lymphocytes.

Bronchiectasis↗

[Phagocytic and lymphoid elements in tissue reactions during aseptic inflammation].

A foreign body was introduced into the rabbit abdominal cavity. Macrophages, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL), lymphocytes of the abdomino-cavitary exudate, blood, trachea were examined cytochemically, whilst the tissue being formed around the foreign body and lungs were subjected to histological study. It was shown that three levels of structural and functional reconstitution of macrophages, PMNL and lymphocytes accompanied the development of aseptic inflammation. The system level determines the likeness of alterations of macrophages, PMNL and lymphocytes of different sites. The regional and cellular levels are responsible for the difference between the cells of different sites and types. A relationship was disclosed between the system reconstitution and the local (capsule) and distant (lung) tissue inflammation. The alterative and exudative tissue processes depend on the damage to macrophages, PMNL and lymphocytes. Meanwhile the proliferative processes depend on the changes in the biosynthesis of these cells.

[Cyto-histochemical study of morphogenesis of experimental nonspecific pneumonia].

Examination of macrophages, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) and lymphocytes of the trachea, PMNL and blood lymphocytes, of the condition of pulmonary tissue in the time course of the process (1st day--l months) revealed an association between the developing cellular and tissue changes. The development of alterations in the lungs with predominant anabolic changes and moderate exudation are characterized by a decrease in the content of nucleoproteins (deoxyribonucleoproteins, ribonucleoproteins), and activity of NAD-diaphorase and alkaline phosphatase, an increase in the activity of acid phosphatase in the above-mentioned cells of the trachea and blood as well as by increased permeability of lysosomal membranes and degeneration of macrophages, PMNL and lymphocytes of the trachea. The above cellular changes in combination with increased permeability of PMNL and blood lymphocyte lysosomal membranes correspond to the development in the lungs of catabolic alterative lesions, marked exudation, and suppurative-necrotic processes. The increase in the content of nucleoproteins and NAD-diaphorase and alkaline phosphatase activity and the decrease in the acid phosphatase activity are accompanied by activation of proliferation in the lungs.
