Energy balance and physical activity in obese children attending day-care centres.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate energy balance and physical activity in obese preschool children attending day-care centres. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: Twenty-four 3-5 years old obese children selected at random from four different day-care centres in Santiago City, Chile. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was measured by doubly labelled water and physical activity as recorded by TRITRAC R3D motion sensor. Energy intake was assessed by measuring food intake while at the centre, along with the recording of additional food intake in the home. RESULTS: Obese children had a 5.4% higher weighed energy intake than their energy requirements 2001. Energy intake during the week was 7716+/-1092 kJ/day and 7401+/-1023 kJ/day in boys and girls, respectively. Minimal activity was higher in the day-care centres (62%) compared to 52% during the weekend at home. Light activity was higher during the weekend at home than during the week (25 versus 20%), but moderate-intense activity was similar (3-5%). CONCLUSIONS: Reduction in dietary energy provided at the day-care centres helps to balance energy requirements during the week. Obese children had marked sedentary characteristics with regards to physical activity, although children are more active at home in weekends. This situation suggests that educators and parents need to improve children's physical activity levels and nutrition habits.

Variation of the antimicrobial activity of Pseudognaphalium vira vira (Asteraceae): isolation and X-ray structure of ent-3beta-hydroxy-16-kauren-19-oic acid.

The antimicrobial properties of the resinous exudate from twigs and leaves of a population of Pseudognaphalium vira vira were re-examined against five Gram positive bacteria. The observed decrease in the antimicrobial activity might reflect a change in the diterpenoid composition of the exudate. The title compound 2 was isolated in substantial amount, together with ent-16-kauren-19-oic acid (1), and its structure determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

[Central obesity: relationship between conicity index and lipoprotein risk factors for coronary atherosclerosis].

In middle age men the relationship between biochemical and anthropometric parameters was studied associated with central obesity in order to evaluate the risk of coronary atherosclerosis. In 31 males of 30 to 65 years of age, "apparently healthy", we determined the percentile 50 (P50) for body fat percentage (PG), 26.8% (utilizing the skinfold thicknesses) and P75 of Conicity Index (IC), 1.26. Were selected 63 subjects with different values of PG and IC. IC, adjusted for BMI and PG, correlated with Cholesterol (CT), Triglycerides (TG), CT/C-HDL, C-LDL/C-HDL, Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apo B/C-HDL, (P < 0.01) in all cases), and cholesterol LDL (C-LDL) (P < 0.05). This population was divided in three groups: Group I, Control, N = 19, PG < = 27% and IC < 1.26; Group II, obese without Central Obesity Predominance (POC), N = 15, PG < or = 27% and IC < or = 1.26; Group III, N = 23, obese with POC, PG > 27% and IC < or = 1.26. We found that Group III vs Group II had: CT 242 +/- 35 vs 205 +/- 40 mg/dl (P < 0.01), C-LDL 165 +/- 41 vs 138 +/- 36 mg/dl (P < 0.05) and CT/C-HDL 6.0 +/- 1.2 VS 5.1 +/- 1.2 (p < 0.05) respectively. Group III vs I showed significant differences for all biochemical parameters and index studied with exception of C-HDL. In subjects with IC > 1.26 vs IC < = 1.26 increased the frequency of coronary risk factors and indicators: CT > or = 240 mg/dl, 59% vs 12% (P < 0.001); C-LDL > or = 160 mg/dl, 55% vs 18% (P < 0.001); Apo B > 120 mg/dl, 72% vs 26% (P < 0.001); CT/C-HDL > 4.5, 86% vs 53% (P < 0.01); C-LDL/C-HDL > 3.0, 86% vs 47% (P < 0.001); Apo B/C-HDL > 2.6, 72% vs 47% (P < 0.05). Our results suggest that the use of IC combined with lipoproteic factors and index will contribute to the detection of males at risk of coronary heart disease.

First documented outbreak of dengue in the Peruvian Amazon region.

This article describes a classical dengue outbreak caused by dengue serotypes 1 and 4 that occurred from March to July 1990 in the city of Iquitos and surrounding areas of Loreto Department in the Peruvian Amazon. Epidemiologic data indicate that more than 150,000 persons may have been affected in Iquitos alone. Another dengue outbreak occurred in Tarapoto, a city in the neighboring department of San Martín. Laboratory data indicate that the same dengue serotypes were involved in both outbreaks. No cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever/shock syndrome appear to have occurred. Prior to this outbreak, no indigenous dengue cases had been documented in Peru.

[P. Metastasis of prostatic carcinoma to the epididymis].

When reviewing the bibliography of this rare metastatic location of cancer of the prostate gland, we have only been able to compile the observations published by HUMPHREY (1), BROTHERUS (2) and SMITH (3) wo describe cases with the same location and characteristics. All the observations of metastasis in the epididymis of cancer of the prostate gland constitute unexpected findings during the course of surgical castration operations. The morphology is always the same, small indurated nodules respecting the rest of the epididymis. On the other hand, metastases in the epididymis of extraurinary adenocarcinomas most of which were digestive, were not discovered until the increased size and pain in the testicle attracted the patient's attention and the exploration led to the identification of the tumour in the epidiymis (2, 4, 5). However, primitive malignant tumours of the epididymis constitute an infrequent lesion. In the literature there were found to be more primitive tumours in relation to the metastatic ones and it was difficult to establish the diagnosis of a primitive tumour of the epididymis without having previously ruled out the possibility of other distant neoplasias which are sometimes even asymptomatic.
