Search for orthodontic assistant personality profile.

A study of 124 orthodontists and 476 auxiliaries was undertaken to learn whether successful chairside assistants had a special personality as shown by the Cattell 16 PF test. The successful and unsuccessful orthodontic assistants differed significantly in only one respect. The successful assistants generally displayed more conscientiousness than the nonsuccessful assistants. This study suggests that most orthodontic assistants come from a group of women that differs little from the mean of the general population.

Accurate arch-discrepancy measurements.

A new technique for accurately measuring tooth-to-arch-length discrepancies according to the ideal arch form is discussed. The armamentarium for making these measurements is explained, and the technique is demonstrated. Clearly, this is an important part of orthodontic diagnosis, and there is a need for greater accuracy than that which techniques of the past have made possible.

Clothing adaptations: the occupational therapist and the clothing designer collaborate.

An occupational therapist and a clothing designer collaborated in solving the dressing problem of a child with multiple amputations. The dressing problems were identified and solutions for clothing adaptations relating to sleeves, closures, fasteners, fit, and design were incorporated into two test garments. Evaluation of the garments was based on ease in dressing and undressing, the effect on movement and mobility, the construction techniques, and their appearance. A description is given of the pattern adjustments, and considerations for clothing adaptations or selection or both are discussed. These clothing adaptations can be generalized to a wider population of handicapped persons.

Rate factors in development of the high-pressure neurological syndrome.

The effect of varying the pressure/time profile upon development of tremors and convulsions of the high-pressure neurological syndrome was studied in adult mice and squirrel monkeys and in baby mice. Two distinct response patterns were observed. In the adults rapid compression produces early onset of convulsions; convulsions subside rapidly when animals are held at constant pressure just above the convulsion point; and interrupted compression schedules show that total compression time rather than instantaneous compression rate at the moment seizures develop is the controlling parameter. Baby mice up to 12 days of age, by contrast, fail to show any perceptible relation between compression rate and convulsion threshold pressure (Pc); their seizures continue for a considerable period of time after a constant pressure level just above the convulsion threshold has been reached; and interrupted compressions of type a fail to change their convulsion threshold. Together with supplementary data regarding tremor thresholds and the transient increase of convulsion thresholds by prior seizures these results lead to a proposed schema describing these phenomena in terms of a pressure-dependent primary event predisposing to tremors and convulsions; a time-dependent event counteracting the convulsions (absent in baby mice); and a transient effect of prior convulsions, raising subsequent Pc.
