The Pathways in Practice programme: an investigation into its potential use by general dental practitioners.

During a series of four meetings to distribute and introduce the 'Pathways in Practice' distance learning programme to general dental practitioners (GDPs) in the Trent region, an investigation was undertaken to determine the postgraduate support needs which the participating GDPs perceived as being appropriate. Small-group (peer review type) meetings were favoured by the majority, supported by additional teaching material and by tutorial sessions. There was a clear need for feedback for those proposing to present for the DGDPRCS Eng. These participants expressed the need for mock examinations and marking of example written questions. During discussions, the use of the programme with in-practice tutorials by vocational training scheme trainers was highlighted, as was the possibility of using modules as core material for peer review meetings. The investigation pinpointed key areas which should be addressed by the Divisional Diploma Tutors when organising post-graduate support for the 'Pathways in Practice' programme. It also highlighted the demands on time which will be encountered by the Tutors.

Putting the BDJ to bed.

Twenty-two times a year, usually once every 2 weeks, the British Dental Journal drops through letter-boxes around the world. Some recipients read the Journal cover to cover, others concentrate on specific sections ('Letters to the Editor' are avidly scrutinised), some turn straight to the 'Classified' section and some put it away for 'later on'. Considering the amount of effort put into producing each issue of the BDJ, it would be deflating to think that some recipients skim quickly through it; realistically this must be the case. How many readers, however, stop for a moment to consider how the BDJ came into being? While the actual production of the BDJ is carried out in exactly the same way as any other glossy, colour magazine, whether it be Country Life or Woman's Own, there is a great deal of extra work besides, as it is a scientific journal (see p453). This article looks at who and what are involved in producing an issue, from the perspective of the team in the editorial office.

Viorica Bergman.

Middle class, middle aged, female: I can hear the yawns already. This is not a description to conjure up the image of a forward-thinking, hard-working dentist with a wide portfolio outside her chosen profession. However, both descriptions apply to Viorica Bergman.

Ki aikido: a solution to stress.

It is common knowledge that the life of the general dental practitioner is extremely stressful. Different dentists resort to various ways of unwinding--perhaps a game of golf, a sailing trip, or mending the odd clock as occupational therapy. These are all ways of getting away from the stress of day-to-day work--but perhaps the time has come to look for a more fundamental solution. How many dentists have considered taking up a martial art to alleviate the problem of stress? Here, we outline the background of ki aikido and its practical applications in daily life.
