Catalytic enantioselective domino oxa-michael/aldol condensations: asymmetric synthesis of benzopyran derivatives.

The first direct organocatalytic asymmetric domino oxa-Michael/aldol condensation reaction is presented. The unprecedentedly simple, chiral, pyrrolidine-catalyzed asymmetric domino reactions between salicylic aldehyde derivatives and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes proceed with high chemo- and enantioselectivities to give the corresponding chromene-3-carbaldehyde derivatives in high yields and with ee values of 83-98%.

Mechanistic study of hydrogen transfer to imines from a hydroxycyclopentadienyl ruthenium hydride. Experimental support for a mechanism involving coordination of imine to ruthenium prior to hydrogen transfer.

Reaction of [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(5)-C(4)COH)Ru(CO)(2)H] (2) with different imines afforded ruthenium amine complexes at low temperatures. At higher temperatures in the presence of 2, the complexes decomposed to give [Ru(2)(CO)(4)(mu-H)(C(4)Ph(4)COHOCC(4)Ph(4))] (1) and free amine. Electron-rich imines gave ruthenium amine complexes with 2 at a lower temperature than did electron-deficient imines. The negligible deuterium isotope effect (k(RuHOH)/k(RuDOD) = 1.05) observed in the reaction of 2 with N-phenyl[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylidene]amine (12) shows that neither hydride (RuH) nor proton (OH) is transferred to the imine in the rate-determining step. In the dehydrogenation of N-phenyl-1-phenylethylamine (4) to the corresponding imine 8 by [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(4)-C(4)CO)Ru(CO)(2)] (A), the kinetic isotope effects observed support a stepwise hydrogen transfer where the isotope effect for C-H cleavage (k(CHNH)/k(CDNH) = 3.24) is equal to the combined (C-H, N-H) isotope effect (k(CHNH)/k(CDND) = 3.26). Hydrogenation of N-methyl(1-phenylethylidene)amine (14) by 2 in the presence of the external amine trap N-methyl-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylamine (16) afforded 90-100% of complex [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(4)-C(4)CO)]Ru(CO)(2)NH(CH(3))(CHPhCH(3)) (15), which is the complex between ruthenium and the amine newly generated from the imine. At -80 degrees C the reaction of hydride 2 with 4-BnNH-C(6)H(9)=NPh (18), with an internal amine trap, only afforded [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(4)-C(4)CO)](CO)(2)RuNH(Ph)(C(6)H(10)-4-NHBn) (19), where the ruthenium binds to the amine originating from the imine, showing that neither complex A nor the diamine is formed. Above -8 degrees C complex 19 rearranged to the thermodynamically more stable [Ph(4)(eta(4)-C(4)CO)](CO)(2)RuNH(Bn)(C(6)H(10)-4-NHPh) (20). These results are consistent with an inner sphere mechanism in which the substrate coordinates to ruthenium prior to hydrogen transfer and are difficult to explain with the outer sphere pathway previously proposed.

A 3.0 micros room temperature excited state lifetime of a bistridentate RuII-polypyridine complex for rod-like molecular arrays.

A bistridentate RuII-polypyridine complex [Ru(bqp)2]2+ (bqp = 2,6-bis(8'-quinolinyl)pyridine) has been prepared, which has a coordination geometry much closer to a perfect octahedron than the typical Ru(terpyridine)2-type complex. Thus, the complex displays a 3.0 mus lifetime of the lowest excited metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) state at room temperature. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the longest MLCT state lifetime reported for a RuII-polypyridyl complex at room temperature. The structure allows for the future construction of rod-like, isomer-free molecular arrays by substitution of donor and acceptor moieties on the central pyridine units. This makes it a promising photosensitizer for applications in molecular devices for artificial photosynthesis and molecular electronics.

Sodium trichloromethanesulfonate monohydrate.

Sodium trichloromethanesulfonate monohydrate, Na+.CCl3SO3-.H2O, crystallizes in P2(1)/a with all the atoms located in general positions. The trichloromethanesulfonate (trichlate) anion consists of pyramidal SO3 and CCl3 groups connected via an S-C bond in a staggered conformation with approximate C3v symmetry. The water molecule is hydrogen bonded to the sulfonate O atoms, with one water H atom forming weak bifurcated O-H...O hydrogen bonds to two different trichlate ions. Two water O atoms and three O atoms from different SO3 groups form a square-pyramidal arrangement around the sodium ion.

Bio-inspired, side-on attachment of a ruthenium photosensitizer to an iron hydrogenase active site model.

The first ruthenium-diiron complex [(mu-pdt)Fe2(CO)5{PPh2(C6H4CCbpy)}Ru(bpy)2]2+ 1 (pdt = propyldithiolate, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) is described in which the photoactive ruthenium trisbipyridyl unit is linked to a model of the iron hydrogenase active site by a ligand directly attached to one of the iron centers. Electrochemical and photophysical studies show that the light-induced MLCT excited state of the title complex is localized towards the potential diiron acceptor unit. However, the relatively mild potential required for the reduction of the acetylenic bipyridine together with the easily oxidized diiron portion leads to a reductive quenching of the excited state, instead. This process results in a transiently oxidized diiron unit which may explain the surprisingly high light sensitivity of complex 1.

Comparison of ultrasound and autopsy findings in pregnancies terminated due to fetal anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To compare antenatal diagnoses with autopsy findings in pregnancies terminated after ultrasound detection of fetal anomalies. A second aim was to study the quality of antenatal fetal diagnosis over time. DESIGN: Retrospective, multicenter study over two consecutive six-year periods in Uppsala and Stockholm. SETTING: Cases were identified through fetal autopsy reports. SUBJECTS: Three hundred and twenty-eight fetuses from pregnancies terminated between 1992 and 2003 because of ultrasonographically diagnosed anomalies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The findings at the last ultrasound examination were compared with the autopsy reports. RESULTS: In 299 cases (91.2%) ultrasound findings either exactly matched or were essentially similar to the autopsy findings. In 23 cases (7%) ultrasound findings were not confirmed at autopsy, but the postnatal findings were at least as severe as the antenatal ones. In six cases (1.8%) termination was performed for an anomaly which proved to be less severe than was predicted by ultrasound. The number of such cases was the same in both six-year periods, while the total number of cases increased from 113 in the first to 215 in the second period. Fetal examination provided further diagnostic information in 47% of the cases. In 10% a syndrome was disclosed. CONCLUSION: Termination of pregnancy was not always based on a correct antenatal diagnosis. All fetuses but one from terminated pregnancies had evident anomalies. In six cases (1.8%) the decision to terminate was based on suboptimal prognostic and diagnostic information. Fetal autopsy by an experienced perinatal pathologist is essential to provide a definitive diagnosis.

Highly hydrated cations: deficiency, mobility, and coordination of water in crystalline nonahydrated scandium(III), yttrium(III), and lanthanoid(III) trifluoromethanesulfonates.

Trivalent lanthanide-like metal ions coordinate nine water oxygen atoms, which form a tricapped trigonal prism in a large number of crystalline hydrates. Water deficiency, randomly distributed over the capping positions, was found for the smallest metal ions in the isomorphous nonahydrated trifluoromethanesulfonates, [M(H2O)n](CF3SO3)3, in which M = Sc(III), Lu(III), Yb(III), Tm(III) or Er(III). The hydration number n increases (n = 8.0(1), 8.4(1), 8.7(1), 8.8(1) and 8.96(5), respectively) with increasing ionic size. Deuterium (2H) solid-state NMR spectroscopy revealed fast positional exchange between the coordinated capping and prism water molecules; this exchange started at temperatures higher than about 280 K for lutetium(III) and below 268 K for scandium(III). Similar positional exchange for the fully nonahydrated yttrium(III) and lanthanum(III) compounds started at higher temperatures, over about 330 and 360 K, respectively. An exchange mechanism is proposed that can exchange equatorial and capping water molecules within the restrictions of the crystal lattice, even for fully hydrated lanthanoid(III) ions. Phase transitions occurred for all the water-deficient compounds at approximately 185 K. The hydrated scandium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate transforms reversibly (DeltaH degrees = -0.80(1) kJ mol(-1) on cooling) to a trigonal unit cell that is almost nine times larger, with the scandium ion surrounded by seven fully occupied and two partly occupied oxygen atom positions in a distorted capped trigonal prism. The hydrogen bonding to the trifluoromethanesulfonate anions stabilises the trigonal prism of water ligands, even for the crowded hydration sphere of the smallest metal ions in the series. Implications for the Lewis acid catalytic activity of the hydrated scandium(III) and lanthanoid(III) trifluoromethanesulfonates for organic syntheses performed in aqueous media are discussed.

A new strategy for the improvement of photophysical properties in ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes. Synthesis and photophysical and electrochemical characterization of six mononuclear ruthenium(II) bisterpyridine-type complexes.

The synthesis and characterization of six ruthenium(II) bistridentate polypyridyl complexes is described. These were designed on the basis of a new approach to increase the excited-state lifetime of ruthenium(II) bisterpyridine-type complexes. By the use of a bipyridylpyridyl methane ligand in place of terpyridine, the coordination environment of the metal ion becomes nearly octahedral and the rate of deactivation via ligand-field (i.e., metal-centered) states was reduced as shown by temperature-dependent emission lifetime studies. Still, the possibility to make quasi-linear donor-ruthenium-acceptor triads is maintained in the complexes. The most promising complex shows an excited-state lifetime of tau = 15 ns in alcohol solutions at room temperature, which should be compared to a lifetime of tau = 0.25 ns for [Ru(tpy)2]2+. The X-ray structure of the new complex indeed shows a more octahedral geometry than that of [Ru(tpy)2]2+. Most importantly, the high excited-state energy was retained, and thus, so was the potential high reactivity of the excited complex, which has not been the case with previously published strategies based on bistridentate complexes.

Molecular orbital studies on brominated diphenyl ethers. Part I--conformational properties.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as additive flame retardants and quantities in the environment are on the rise. Because they are structurally related to polychlorinated biphenyls and also to thyroid hormones, there is serious concern that PBDEs may pose a danger to human health. Knowledge of their conformational properties is key to assessing their environmental fate and risk. The conformational properties of PBDEs were investigated by quantum chemical methods including semiempirical self-consistent field molecular orbital (SCF-MO), ab initio SCF-MO and density functional theory (DFT). Conformational analyses of model congeners 2,2',4,6'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether and 2,3,4,4',5,6-hexabromodiphenyl ether, based on energy maps calculated by semiempirical AM1 method, may indicate that all PBDE congeners except those with the tetra-ortho-bromination are conformationally flexible (or soft) due to low energy barriers for interconversion of stable conformers. The results of the conformational analyses are in conformity with recently published X-ray crystallographic data. For comparison with the results of the semiempirical method, higher level ab initio and DFT models were applied as well. The optimized geometries all lie well inside low energy regions on the maps and thus also ascertain the semiempirical calculations. According to computed geometric parameters and net atomic charges, the model B3LYP/3-21G* seemed to give better results than B3LYP/6-31G* and HF/6-31G*.

Molecular orbital studies on brominated diphenyl ethers. Part II--reactivity and quantitative structure-activity (property) relationships.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants and are increasingly turning up in the environment. Their structural similarities to polychlorinated biphenyls and thyroid hormones suggest they may be a risk to human health. The present study examines the reactivity of brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) on the basis of the electronic structures as calculated by semiempirical AM1 self-consistent field molecular orbital (SCF-MO) method. Frontier orbital energies were used to elucidate the reactivity of BDEs in electrophilic, nucleophilic and photolytic reactions. From an examination of the frontier electron densities, the regioselectivity, or orientation, of metabolic reactions of BDEs was predicted. Furthermore, satisfactory quantitative structure-activity (property) relationship (QSAR and QSPR) models were derived to calculate gas chromatographic and ultraviolet spectral properties and luciferase induction activities from the AM1-computed electronic parameters.

Comparative efficacy and safety of long-acting risperidone and risperidone oral tablets.

A double-blind study of long-acting injectable risperidone and oral risperidone tablets was conducted in 640 patients with schizophrenia. All patients received flexible doses of 1-6 mg of oral risperidone for 8 weeks. Doses were stable during weeks 5-8. At the end of week 8, symptomatically stable patients were randomly assigned to receive long-acting risperidone (active injections, dummy oral) or continued oral risperidone (dummy injections, active oral) for 12 weeks. Significant improvements were demonstrated from baseline to endpoint in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total (P<0.001) and factor scores (P<0.05) in both groups. According to a noninferiority analysis, the two treatments showed comparable efficacy in total PANSS scores over the short-term. No unexpected adverse events were recorded. The findings indicate that symptomatically stable patients can be safely switched from oral risperidone to long-acting injectable risperidone without compromising efficacy.

Effects of visual flow display of flight maneuvers on perceived spatial orientation.

Postural responses were utilized as measures of the effectiveness of a wide-angle visual flow display in determining perceived spatial orientation (SO). The general experimental setup included a 150 degrees x 34 degrees wide-field display showing flight over computer-generated ground with horizon. Simulated roll maneuvers on this display induced postural sway in the observer that was registered by a head-tracker system. Two experiments with 16 participants in each investigated the effects of visual flow, display exclusions in the central visual field, and display extensions into the visual periphery. Clear vestibular and proprioceptive suppression effects were demonstrated on postural sway with the inclusion of visual flow of forward ego motion in roll maneuvers. Compared with the full view, up to 20 degrees x 20 degrees central field omission either did not reduce the effect or reduced the effect but, frequently, only moderately. Limiting the display area to 45 degrees in the horizontal dimension reduced display effectiveness significantly, whereas a 105 degrees area did not, compared with the full view. Utilizing postural responses as indications of visual display resonance with our SO mechanism, actual or potential applications of this research include the design of an interface integrating flight-adapted visual flow to counteract or reduce pilot spatial disorientation.

Di-p-bromophenyl ether, a redetermined crystal structure derived from low-quality diffraction data.

We show that the lack of good quality data, normally essential to successful crystal structure analysis, can in part be compensated for by measuring data from several crystals and merging the resulting data sets. The crystal structure of the flame retardant di-p-bromophenyl ether, C12H8Br2O, a twofold axially symmetric molecule, has been redetermined and refined from such a merged multi-crystal diffraction data set to an acceptable conventional R factor (R1 = 0.06), a result which could not have been obtained from any one of our single-crystal diffraction data sets used alone in the normal manner.

Titanium screw implants in optimization of radiographic evaluation of facial growth in longitudinal animal studies.

The aim of this study was to develop a method that optimizes the reliability of longitudinal radiographic evaluation of small and fast-growing animals, such as the rabbit. Because the use of conventional cephalometric methods, including superimposition of serial radiographs, is more problematic in small animals than in humans, two titanium-alloy screws were placed 10 mm apart in the sagittal crest of the parietal bone in 10 growing New Zealand white rabbits. The anterior screw served as holder for a steel pin that, in turn, secured the fixation of the rabbit's head to a specially designed cephalostat. A lateral cephalogram of each animal was exposed on four occasions at one-month intervals. Computer-aided superimpositions were made of all four cephalograms from each animal using the screws in the calvarium as reference structures. To evaluate the method, the superimpositions were repeated after three to eight weeks, and the superimposition reproducibility was calculated. From the results, it can be concluded that the method allows congruent positioning of the animal skull relative to the film-focus assembly at repeated radiographic examinations. Furthermore, it introduces readily identified reference structures in the animal skull that can be used at high-precision superimposition of serial radiographs.
