Dynamic compressibility and aging in Wigner crystals and quantum glasses.

We study the nonequilibrium linear response of quantum elastic systems pinned by quenched disorder with Schwinger-Keldysh real-time techniques complemented by a mean-field variational approach. We find (i) a quasiequilibrium regime in which the analytic continuation from the imaginary-time replica results holds provided the marginality condition is enforced, and (ii) an aging regime. The conductivity and compressibility are computed. The latter is found to cross over from its dynamic to static value on a scale set by the waiting time after a quench, an effect which can be probed in experiments in, e.g., Wigner glasses.

Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the vortex glass in superconductors.

We study the relaxational dynamics of flux lines in high-temperature superconductors with random pinning using Langevin dynamics. At high temperatures the dynamics is stationary and the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) holds. At low temperatures the system does not equilibrate with its thermal bath: a simple multiplicative aging is found, the FDT is violated, and we find that an effective temperature characterizes the slow modes of the system. The generic features of the evolution--scaling laws--are dictated by those of the single elastic line in a random environment.

Effective temperature in driven vortex lattices with random pinning.

We study numerically correlation and response functions in nonequilibrium driven vortex lattices with random pinning. From a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation, we calculate an effective transverse temperature in the fluid moving phase. We find that the effective temperature decreases with increasing driving force and becomes equal to the equilibrium melting temperature when the dynamic transverse freezing occurs. We also discuss how the effective temperature can be measured experimentally from a generalized Kubo formula.

Separation of time scales and reparametrization invariance for aging systems.

We show that the generating functional describing the slow dynamics of spin-glass systems is invariant under reparametrizations of the time. This result is general and applies for both infinite and short-range models. It follows simply from the assumption that a separation between short time scales and long time scales exists in the system, and from the constraints of causality and unitarity. Global-time reparametrization invariance suggests that the low action excitations in a spin-glass may be smoothly spatially varying time reparametrizations. These Goldstone modes may provide the basis for an analytic dynamical theory of short-range spin glasses.

Heterogeneous aging in spin glasses.

We introduce a set of theoretical ideas that form the basis for an analytical framework capable of describing nonequilibrium dynamics in glassy systems. We test the resulting scenario by comparing its predictions with numerical simulations of short-range spin glasses. Local fluctuations and responses are shown to be connected by a generalized local out-of-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation. Scaling relationships are uncovered for the slow evolution of heterogeneities at all time scales.
