Genome-Wide Identification of the PAL Gene Family in Idesia polycarpa and Transcriptomic Responses to Botryosphaeria dothidea Infection.

Idesia polycarpa is a woody oil tree threatened by stem canker caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea, yet the organization and infection-responsive behavior of its phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) gene family remain poorly understood. Here, we identified five IpPAL genes and characterized their phylogenetic relationships, conserved features, duplication patterns, promoter cis-elements, and infection-associated expression profiles. Segmental and tandem duplication contributed to IpPAL family evolution, and all duplicated pairs showed Ka/Ks ratios below 1, consistent with purifying selection. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of contrasting Chengdu and Zhangjiajie provenances revealed distinct temporal responses. In Chengdu, IpPAL2-IpPAL4 were significantly upregulated at 24 h after inoculation, whereas all five genes were upregulated at 96 h. In Zhangjiajie, all five IpPAL genes were significantly upregulated at 24 h, while IpPAL2-IpPAL5 remained upregulated at 96 h. No IpPAL gene met the differential-expression criteria between provenances under mock conditions or at 24 h; at 96 h, IpPAL1 and IpPAL3 were lower and IpPAL5 was higher in Zhangjiajie than in Chengdu. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided complementary qualitative evidence of provenance-associated tissue responses. These findings demonstrate time- and gene-specific IpPAL responses to B. dothidea and identify candidate genes for further functional analysis.

Electron shuttles facilitate methane-dependent arsenate reduction in paddy soils.

Methane-dependent arsenate reduction (M-AsR) occurs widely in paddy soils and can substantially enhance arsenic mobilization, posing potential ecological risks. However, the role of electron shuttles in this process remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the influence of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on M-AsR in paddy soils. Fourteen-day incubation showed that 1 mmol/L AQDS facilitated 50.88 % of arsenate reduction and 31.31 % of methane oxidation. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that AQDS significantly increased the abundance of functional genes associated with arsenate reduction (arrA, arsC) and anaerobic methane oxidation (mcrA) (P < 0.05). Microbial community analysis revealed that AQDS addition enriched Cloacibacterium, Sphingorhabdus, and Methylocystis, while decreasing the relative abundance of Methylobacter and Methylomonas. These findings indicate that electron shuttles facilitate M-AsR by modulating functional microbial populations, providing valuable insights into arsenic biogeochemistry and the coupled cycling of methane and arsenic in paddy soils.

Strategic expression of ion transport peptide gene products in central and peripheral neurons of insects.

Structurally related ion transport peptides (ITP) and crustacean hyperglycemic hormones (CHH) are increasingly implicated in diverse metabolic and developmental functions in arthropods. We identified a conserved ITP gene encoding two peptides by alternative splicing in Manduca sexta, Bombyx mori, and Aedes aegypti: A C-terminally amidated ITP and a C-terminally unblocked ITP-like peptide (ITPL), which share common N-terminal sequences but have divergent C-termini. In the moth M. sexta, these peptides are expressed in two, regionally distinct neuronal populations in the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS, PNS). MasITP expression is confined to the brain in five pairs of lateral neurosecretory cells (type Ia(2)) projecting ipsilateral axons into the retrocerebral complex and three to five pairs of adjacent small neurons that arborize extensively within the brain. Expression of MasITPL is comparatively weak in the brain but strong in the ventral ganglia and the PNS, where MasITP is absent. MasITPL occurs in bilaterally paired neurons of all thoracic and abdominal ganglia. In the PNS, MasITPL is coexpressed with crustacean cardioactive peptide in type II link nerve neurons (L1) of abdominal segments 2-7, which project axons into neurohemal transverse nerves. During metamorphosis, additional expression of MasITPL is observed in two pairs of small lateral neurons in the brain and one pair of ventromedial neurons in each of AG2-6. A similar pattern of differential ITP and ITPL expression was observed in the CNS and PNS of B. mori and Schistocerca americana. These distinctive cellular expression patterns suggest that ITP and ITPL have evolved specialized physiological functions in arthropods.

[Study on the interaction of lomefloxacin terbium complex and bovine serum albumin by fluorescence spectra].

Using lomefloxacin-terbium as a fluorescent probe, the interaction of LFLX-Tb3+ and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by fluorescence spectra. The interaction of LFLX and BSA is quite strong. LFLX can affect the conformation of BSA to some degree. Meanwhile, the electrostatic binding of the BSA with Tb3+ in LFLX-Tb3+ complex could decease the nonradiative energy loss through O-H vibration of H2O molecule in Tb3+ complex. Under the optimum conditions, BSA can enhance the fluorescence intensity of the lomefloxacin-terbium complex at 545 nm, and the enhanced fluorescence intensity of Tb3+ is proportional to the concentration of BSA. Based on that, a new method is constructed for the determination of BSA. The linear ranges for BSA are 16.5-148.5 microg x mL(-1) with a detection limit of 68.8 ng x mL(-1) and relative standard deviations of 1.4%. This method is simple, practical and relatively free of interference from coexistent substances.

[Prevalence analysis on congenital hydrocephalus in Chinese perinatal from 1996 to 2004].

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological characteristics of congenital hydrocephalus in Chinese perinatal. METHODS: From 1996 to 2004, data gained from Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring Network were used to depict the epidemiology of congenital hydrocephalus in China. All perinatal born in hospitals had an access within 7 days after delivery. The affected cases were divided into two groups-isolated and syndromic hydrocephalus. And prevalence rates were calculated by year, by sex, by birth area (urban versus rural), by maternal age group and by geographic area (north versus south). Of the affected, fetal age at birth, birth weight, perinatal outcome and prenatal diagnosis were analysed. RESULTS: All 3012 perinatal with congenital hydrocephalus were identified among 4,282,536 births, then an overall prevalence rate was 7.03/10,000, rates of isolated and syndromic hydrocephalus were 5.67/10,000 and 1.36/10,000 respectively. Furthermore, the annual prevalence rates of hydrocephalus presented an increasing trend during that period. The rates in male and female births, in urban and rural area, were 7.09/10,000 and 6.76/10,000, 5.49/10,000 and 10.10/10,000 respectively. There were significant differences among maternal-age-specific prevalence rates, the highest (11.42/10,000) was in an age < 20 years group. For total and isolated hydrocephalus, higher rates were found in north part of China. On the contrary, a higher rate of syndromic hydrocephalus was observed in south part of China. Among the infants with hydrocephalus, the ratio of preterm delivery and of low birth weight were 57.97% and 50.92% respectively. The ratio of congenital hydrocephalus diagnosed antenatally, which could be an indicator representing the capability of detecting the malformation both prenatally and postnatally, showed an upward trend similar to the prevalence rates. The perinatal fatality rates of the total, isolated and syndromic hydrocephalus were 87.75%, 88.66% and 83.91% correspondingly. CONCLUSION: Based on comparison between prevalence rates in China and those reported in foreign countries, our country might be listed into a higher epidemic region of the congenital hydrocephalus. Significant differences were identified between rural and urban areas, between north and south parts of China. The improvement ability in prenatal and postnatal diagnosis should be partly accounted for the increasing prevalence rates of hydrocephalus in Chinese perinatal. The poor birth quality of the affected predicts poor prognosis.

Anti-SARS-CoV immunity induced by a novel CpG oligodeoxynucleotide.

To develop CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs) based therapy for prevention and treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), we selected a novel CpG ODN (BW001), which displays B-type CpG ODN structure feature at the 5' and A-type CpG ODN structure feature at the 3', and tested for its anti-SARS-CoV activity. We found that the supernatants of human PBMCs stimulated by BW001 significantly protected Vero cells from SARS-CoV infection. BW001 could stimulate human PBMCs and pDCs to secrete high level of IFN-alpha and promote human PBMCs and B cells to proliferate. Furthermore, we demonstrated that BW001 could activate CD19+ B cells and CD56+ NK cells in human PBMCs. In addition, BW001 could enhance NK cytotoxicity and IFN-gamma secretion in human PBMCs. Together, BW001 represents a novel type of CpG ODN and may have potential for the development of treatment and prevention for SARS as well as other viral associated diseases.

An unusual fold for potassium channel blockers: NMR structure of three toxins from the scorpion Opisthacanthus madagascariensis.

The Om-toxins are short peptides (23-27 amino acids) purified from the venom of the scorpion Opisthacanthus madagascariensis. Their pharmacological targets are thought to be potassium channels. Like Csalpha/beta (cystine-stabilized alpha/beta) toxins, the Om-toxins alter the electrophysiological properties of these channels; however, they do not share any sequence similarity with other scorpion toxins. We herein demonstrate by electrophysiological experiments that Om-toxins decrease the amplitude of the K+ current of the rat channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, as well as human Kv1.3. We also determine the solution structure of three of the toxins by use of two-dimensional proton NMR techniques followed by distance geometry and molecular dynamics. The structures of these three peptides display an uncommon fold for ion-channel blockers, Csalpha/alpha (cystine-stabilized alpha-helix-loop-helix), i.e. two alpha-helices connected by a loop and stabilized by two disulphide bridges. We compare the structures obtained and the dipole moments resulting from the electrostatic anisotropy of these peptides with those of the only other toxin known to share the same fold, namely kappa-hefutoxin1.

Effect of endogenous catecholamines in lymphocytes on lymphocyte function.

Our previous work has showed that lymphocytes can synthesize catecholamines (CAs). However, role and mechanism of the endogenous CAs in lymphocytes in modulation of immune function are less known. In the present study, we used alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (alpha-MT), an inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and pargyline, an inhibitor of monoamine oxydase, to block the synthesis and degradation of CAs in lymphocytes and then observed changes of lymphocyte proliferation induced by concanavalin A (Con A). Phentolamine and propranolol, antagonists respectively to alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptors, were employed to investigate the receptor mechanism. We found that TH mRNA in the Con A-activated lymphocytes was 2.4 times higher in relative density than that in the resting lymphocytes. Similarly, the intracellular and supernatant CAs, including DA, NE and E, of the Con A-stimulated lymphocytes were significantly raised relative to those of the resting cells. alpha-MT (10(-11), 10(-10) and 10(-9) M) facilitated the Con A-induced lymphocyte proliferation, but pargyline (10(-11), 10(-10) and 10(-9) M) attenuated the cell proliferation. Meanwhile, alpha-MT and pargyline respectively led to decrease and increase in the intracellular and supernatant CAs (DA, NE and E) of the Con A-stimulated lymphocytes. Propranolol completely blocked, but phentolamine partly reversed, the suppressive effect of pargyline on the Con A-induced lymphocyte proliferation. Content of cAMP was remarkably increased in the lymphocytes treated with pargyline alone, but it dropped to control level after these cells were treated with propranolol plus pargyline. These results on the one hand further demonstrate the ability of lymphocytes to synthesize CAs and the enhancive ability of the activated lymphocytes to synthesize CAs, and on the other hand reveal an important role of the endogenous CAs in regulation of function of lymphocytes themselves. Besides, our present findings suggest that CAs synthesized by lymphocytes can secrete out of the lymphocytes via paracrine or autocrine pathway and affect lymphocyte function by beta-adrenoreceptor and cAMP mediating mechanism. Thus, it can be implied that CAs in lymphocytes are also involved in the cross-talk in the neuro-endocrine-immune networks.

[Secular trends of hypospadias in Chinese perinatals].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the secular trends in the prevalence rate of hypospadias in Chinese perinatals and explore its possible influencing factors. METHODS: Data were taken from Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring Network, a hospital-based congenital anomalies registry system. All live or still births at or beyond 28 weeks of gestation were assessed within 7 days after delivery in the period from 1987 to 2001. RESULTS: 1999 cases of hypospadias were identified among 3,769,464 male births, the crude prevalence rate being 5.30 per 10,000 births. And an increasing secular trend was observed both in urban and rural areas. In recent years, an increase in rate of hypospadias was found in coastal provinces and inland provinces, but not in remote border provinces. Faster increase was seen in urban areas and coastal areas, compared with that in rural areas and inland areas respectively. CONCLUSION: The prevalence rates of hypospadias in Chinese perinatals from 1987 to 2001 showed an upward tendency.

Mutation analysis of HOXD13 gene in a Chinese pedigree with synpolydactyly.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features and to identify homeobox D13 (HOXD13) gene mutation of the affected individuals in a Chinese synpolydactyly (SPD) kindred. METHODS: Clinical data and peripheral blood samples of SPD family members were obtained through field investigation. For every member of this pedigreeìthe fragment containing mutational hot spots of HOXD13 was amplified by PCR for mutation screening. To examine whether there is any other mutation within coding sequence of HOXD13, exon 1 and exon 2 of HOXD13 were also amplified by PCR. All the amplified fragments were electrophoresed on 2% agarose gels and then the mutant fragments were electrophoresed on 5% polyacrylamide gels to be separated. Purified PCR products of normal and selected mutant alleles were directly sequenced. RESULTS: Comparing the HOXD13 coding sequence of the affected individuals with HOXD13 sequence in the GenBank and with that of the unaffected, an inserted segment coding 8 alanine residues within HOXD13 was found segregating with the disorder. This mutation is also termed polyalanine expansion. The 8-alanine expansion can be interpreted as a reduplication of normal alanines 5-12. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that synpolydactyly in this kindred may be caused by polyalanine expansion in HOXD13.

[An epidemiological investigation on gastroschisis in China during 1996 to 2000].

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological characteristics of gastroschisis in China from 1996 to 2000. METHODS: The birth defects monitoring program was undertaken in 450-466 hospitals from 31 provinces, cities and autonomous regions of China. Data about births including intrauterine death and stillbirth of 28 weeks of gestation was collected to report through the medical records over the time period 1996 to 2000. The maximal diagnosis time was up to 1 week after the delivery. The international Classification of Diseases of Ninth Revision with some modifications was used to code the birth defects. RESULTS: A total of 569 cases with gastroschisis was found in 2,218,616 births monitored. The overall birth incidence of gastroschisis was 2.56 per 10,000 births during the monitored period. The increasing trend of incidence of gastroschisis hadn't been found (P > 0.05). The birth incidence of gastroschisis in rural areas was significant higher than that in urban areas (3.93 vs.1.98 per 10,000, P < 0.01). There was also significantly difference on birth incidence between female and male (2.64 vs. 2.15 per 10,000 births, P < 0.05). The birth incidence of gastroschisis in the mothers less than 20 years old was the highest among all mothers age, which were at 5.4 times increased risk relative to that of mother age of 25-29 years old. The overall perinatal mortality rate of gastroschisis was 74.69 percent, and 41.46 percent of gastroschisis were diagnosed before birth. 27.44 percent of cases were accompanied with other major defects. CONCLUSIONS: There was no increasing trend on the incidence of gastroschisis to be found in China during 1996 to 2000. The mother age less than 20 years old was at an increasing risk of fetal gastroschisis. The cases with gastroschisis had a high perinatal mortality rate.

[Analysis of under 5 years old children mortality and the leading death cause in China from 1996 to 2000].

OBJECTIVE: To study the trend of under 5 years old children mortality and the leading cause of the deaths in China from 1996 to 2000. METHODS: The data presented in this report were obtained from the national child mortality surveillance network, including 116 counties (cities) throughout China. The target population was all children under 5 years old in the monitored areas whose mothers or fathers had resided in the area for at least one year. The data were collected and reported by health workers at the three-level network. RESULTS: The neonatal mortality rate (NMR), infant mortality rate (IMR) and under 5 years old mortality rate (U(5)MR) in China dropped to 22.8, 32.2, 39.7 per 1,000 live births in 2000, respectively (they were 24.0, 36.0, 45.0 respectively in 1996), which declined 5.0%, 10.6%, 11.8% from 1996 to 2000, respectively. In urban areas, NMR, IMR and U(5)MR dropped to 9.5, 11.8, 13.8 per 1,000 live births in 2000, respectively (they were 12.2, 14.8, 16.9 respectively in 1996), which declined 22.1%, 20.3%, 18.3% from 1996 to 2000, respectively. In rural areas, NMR, IMR and U(5)MR dropped to 25.8, 37.0, 45.7 per 1,000 live births in 2000, respectively (they were 26.7, 40.9, 51.4 respectively in 1996), which declined 3.4%, 9.5%, 11.1% from 1996 to 2000, respectively. There was a steady decline in the U(5)MR due to diarrhea, pneumonia, neural tube defects and drowning in China. CONCLUSION: In urban/rural areas, the overall decline in NMR, IMR and U(5)MR from 1996 to 2000 was spectacular. Especially the U(5)MR due to avoidable deaths such as pneumonia and diarrhea was dropped markedly in rural areas.

Solution structure of IsTX. A male scorpion toxin from Opisthacanthus madagascariensis (Ischnuridae).

The novel sex-specific potassium channel inhibitor IsTX, a 41-residue peptide, was isolated from the venom of male Opisthacanthus madagascariensis. Two-dimensional NMR techniques revealed that the structure of IsTX contains a cysteine-stabilized alpha/beta-fold. IsTX is classified, based on its sequential and structural similarity, in the scorpion short toxin family alpha-KTx6. The alpha-KTx6 family contains a single alpha-helix and two beta-strands connected by four disulfide bridges and binds to voltage-gated K(+) channels and apamin-sensitive Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channels. The three-dimensional structure of IsTX is similar to that of Heterometrus spinifer toxin (HsTX1). HsTX1 blocks the Kv1.3 channel at picomolar concentrations, whereas IsTX has much lower affinities (10 000-fold). To investigate the structure-activity relationship, the geometry of sidechains and electrostatic surface potential maps were compared with HsTX1. As a result of the comparison of the primary structures, Lys27 of IsTX was conserved at the same position in HsTX1. The analogous Lys23 of HsTX1, the most critical residue for binding to potassium channels, binds to the channel pore. However, IsTX has fewer basic residues to interact with acidic channel surfaces than HsTX1. MALDI-TOF MS analysis clearly indicated that IsTX was found in male scorpion venom, but not in female. This is the first report that scorpion venom contains sex-specific compounds.

[The prevalence analysis of cleft palate in Chinese perinatals: 1996-2000].

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological features of cleft palate (CP) in Chinese perinatals. METHODS: Data from 1996 to 2000 were collected through Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring Network a hospital based congenital malformation registry system. During that period all live or still births with 28 weeks of gestation or more were assessed within 7 days after delivery. RESULTS: 499 perinatals with CP were identified among 2,218,616 births, then the overall prevalence rates of CP were 2.25/10,000, rates in isolated and syndromic CP were 1.75/10,000, 0.50/10,000 respectively. The rates in urban and rural area, in male and female births were 2.27/10,000 and 2.19/10,000, 1.93/10,000 and 2.57/10,000 respectively. The highest but nonsignificant rate (2.84/10,000) was found in maternal age group of more than 35 years. An increased trend was found both in overall CP and syndromic CP during that period. Geographic variation was found among provinces. The perinatal mortality rate of CP was 14.9%, and the rate of isolated forms was 7.3%, while the rate of syndromic CP was as high as 41.4%. CONCLUSION: The increasing prevalence rate of syndromic CP can account for the secular trend of overall CP. Female predominance was only observed in isolated forms of CP among Chinese perinatals. Geographic variation was identified too. Due to poor birth quality, perinatals suffering from syndromic CP had poor prognosis.

[Maternal mortality in rural areas of China].

OBJECTIVE: To understand with clearness the trend and epidemiological characteristics of maternal mortality, as well as the leading causes of maternal deaths in rural areas of China from 1996 to 2001. METHODS: The data analyzed were those from the population-based epidemiological survey conducted by the national maternal mortality surveillance network which covered a total population of about 35,000,000 in China. RESULTS: The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in rural areas of China dropped by 28.4% from 86.4 per 100,000 live births in 1996 to 61.9 in 2001. The leading causes of maternal deaths were obstetric hemorrhage, preeclampsia and embolism of amniotic fluid. The MMR for obstetric hemorrhage decreased from 48.3 per 100,000 live births in 1996 to 33.0 in 2001. The pregnant women mainly gave childbirths and died in their home, accounting for 44.6% and 30.1% respectively in 2001. CONCLUSION: The MMR showed a downward trend in rural areas of China during the period from 1996 to 2000, and so also did the MMR for obstetric hemorrhage. Reducing obstetric hemorrhage and increasing the rate of hospitalized delivery are the most important methods for reducing the MMR in rural areas in China.

[Impacts of birth defects on perinatal deaths in Chinese population].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the time trends of perinatal mortality and the frequency of birth defects occurring in perinatal deaths, and to provide a national perspective on the impacts of congenital anomalies on perinatal mortality from 1990 through 2001. METHODS: Data were from Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring network-a hospital-based congenital anomalies registry system. During 1990 - 2001, all live or still births with 28 weeks of gestation or more, born in monitoring units, were studied within 7 days after delivery. The proportion of perinatal deaths due to birth defects, which was defined as the number of perinatal deaths associated with congenital anomalies per 100 perinatal deaths, was calculated by birth area (urban versus rural), geographic-economic status (coast areas, inner land areas and remote areas), to evaluate the impacts of birth defects on perinatal mortality. RESULTS: Perinatal mortality declined from 22.85 per 1000 in 1990 to 13.26 per 1000 in 2001, which showed a significant downward trend. Similar trend was also observed in the rate of stillbirth and the ratio of early neonatal death. However, the proportion of perinatal deaths due to birth defects had an increasing trend although the perinatal birth defects-specific death rate was declining, especially during 1996 - 2001. This result was also seen in urban and rural area, in coast regions, in inner land regions and in remote regions of China. Higher rate of birth defects occurring in perinatal deaths was observed in urban area than in rural area. Significant difference of this rate was also found among different geographic-economic regions, with the highest one in inland regions. CONCLUSION: Birth defects were accounted for an increasing proportion of perinatal deaths in China, and had become one of the major causes of perinatal deaths.

[Epidemiological analysis of syndactyly in Chinese perinatals].

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological features of syndactyly (SD) in Chinese perinatals. METHODS: Data were collected through Chinese Birth Defects Monitoring Network, a hospital-based congenital malformation registry system. From 1987 through 2001 (except 1994, 1995), all live or still births with 28 weeks of gestation or more born in participating hospitals were assessed within 7 days after delivery. RESULTS: Totally 2311 perinatals with SD were identified among 7 478 746 births, and 57.2% of them were in association with other anomalies. The overall prevalence rate of SD was 3.09/10 000, the rate of isolated SD and associated SD was 1.32/10 000, and 1.77/10 000 respectively. The prevalence rates in urban and rural areas, in male and female births were 3.22/10 000 and 2.79/10 000, 3.42/10 000 and 2.59/10 000 respectively. An increasing trend was found during that period. The perinatal fatality rate of SD was 20.7%, that of isolated form was 5.7%, while that of associated form was 31.9%. The proportion of SD occurring in right side was the same as that in left side, and the proportion of SD in upper limbs equaled to that in lower limbs. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence rate of SD in Chinese perinatals was similar to that reported in foreign literatures. Associated form of SD was more frequently seen. The prevalence of SD in urban areas was higher than in rural areas. Male excess was identified in both isolated and associated forms of SD. No selective predominance was observed either by affected side or by affected limbs.

[An epidemiological study on omphalocele in China during 1996 to 2000].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the trend of incidence of omphalocele and its epidemiological characteristics in China during 1996 to 2000. METHODS: Surveillance data of omphalocele were collected from 460 hospitals at county level or above county level, involving all births with 28-week gestation to 7 days after delivery, including live births, fetal deaths and stillbirths in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities all over the country during 1996 to 2000. RESULTS: Overall incidence of omphalocele in China was 1.52 per 10 000 live births, with an increasing trend during 1996 to 2000. Incidence of omphalocele was 1.40 per 10 000 and 1.83 per 10 000 in the rural and urban areas, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05), and 1.54 per 10 000 and 1.41 per 10 000 in boys and girls, respectively. Babies of omphalocele associated with other malformation accounted for 30.77% of the total cases. Perinatal fatality rate of omphalocele was 51.18%, with prenatal diagnostic rate of 31.07%. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of omphalocele appeared an increasing trend in China during the period from 1996 to 2000. Occurrence of omphalocele was more frequent in rural areas than that in urban areas. Perinatal fatality rate in babies with omphalocele was higher and fatality of associated omphalocele was higher than that of simple one. It is suggested that management of perinatal care and level of prenatal diagnosis for omphalocele should be improved.
