Schemes of a fiber-optic multiplexing sensor array based on a 3 X 3 star coupler.

A Michelson-based fiber-optic low-coherence interferometric quasi-distributed sensing system permitting absolute length measurement in a sensor array is proposed. The main part of the sensing system is a fiberoptic 3 x 3 star coupler. The architecture of fiber-optic sensors can be easily realized as a linear sensor array, twin sensor arrays, or a loop sensor array. The proposed sensing scheme will be useful for the measurement of strain distribution. An important application could be deformation sensing in smart structures. A six-sensor array is demonstrated experimentally.

Two-loop-based low-coherence multiplexing fiber-optic sensor network with a Michelson optical path demodulator.

A two-loop-based low-coherence multiplexing fiber-optic sensor network is proposed and demonstrated. It greatly extends the multiplexing capacity of this kind of sensor. A practical implementation of this scheme uses a popular amplified spontaneous emission light source and standard single-mode fiber, which are commonly used in the communications industry. The sensor's two-loop topology is completely passive. Absolute length measurements can be obtained for each sensing fiber segment for use in measuring the quasi-distribution strain or temperature. For large-scale smart structures this technique not only extends the multiplexing potential but also provides a redundancy for the sensing system. This means that the two-loop sensor network can break down at several points and the sensing system will still work even if some of the embedded two-loop sensors have been destroyed. The robustness of the nine-sensor two-loop sensing network is investigated and discussed.

Low-coherence Michelson interferometric fiber-optic multiplexed strain sensor array: a minimum configuration.

A minimum configuration Michelson fiber-optic low-coherence interferometric quasi-distributed sensing system is proposed that permits absolute length measurement in remote reflective sensor arrays. The sensor's reflective signal characteristics have been analyzed, and the relationship between intensities of light and number of sensors is given for evaluation of multiplexing potential. The proposed sensing scheme will be useful for the measurement of strain distribution. An important application may be strain monitoring in smart structures. Experimentally, four-sensor array has been demonstrated.

Design of a fiber-optic quasi-distributed strain sensors ring network based on a white-light interferometric multiplexing technique.

A fiber-optic quasi-distributed strain sensors ring network has been designed based on a Mach-Zehnder optical paths interrogator. The optical paths matching for each sensor are discussed, and the optical power budgetary analysis is performed. The relation between the number of sensors and the intensity of the signals of the ring network is given for evaluation of the multiplexing capacity. Experimentally, a seven-sensor array ring network was realized under the condition of light source power 35 microW at 1310 nm, and the distribution strain test was also demonstrated.
