A preliminary study on sorption, diffusion and degradation of mustard (HD) in cement.

A preliminary study has been done to examine the sorption, diffusion and degradation of mustard (HD) in cement. The sample of dried cement paste is a meso-porous adsorbant with a BET surface area around 40.8 m2/g, which is able to adsorb vapor of HD at room temperature and to result in a multiple-layer isotherm of II type. The molecule of HD seemed to chemically adsorb onto cement surface. Droplet of HD contaminating cement was able to be degraded into less toxic products, but in a very low rate of k = 4.8 x 10(-5) min(-1) and t(1/2) = 16 x 10(4) min at room temperature. Droplet of HD is able to penetrate through the layer of cement, but a cement plate of 8mm can protect against HD droplets over 48 h. A decrease of thickness for cement layer or addition of sand in cement would lead to lower the protection time against HD droplets. The diffusion coefficient of HD molecule in cement was determined, about 1.3 x 10(-4) cm2/min and of a typical diffusion in solid.

[A study of coordinates transform iterative fitting method to extract bio-impedance model parameters bio-impedance model parameters].

A new algorithm, the coordinates transform iterative optimizing method based on the least square curve fitting model, is presented. This arithmetic is used for extracting the bio-impedance model parameters. It is superior to other methods, for example, its speed of the convergence is quicker, and its calculating precision is higher. The objective to extract the model parameters, such as Ri, Re, Cm and alpha, has been realized rapidly and accurately. With the aim at lowering the power consumption, decreasing the price and improving the price-to-performance ratio, a practical bio-impedance measure system with double CPUs has been built. It can be drawn from the preliminary results that the intracellular resistance Ri increased largely with an increase in working load during sitting, which reflects the ischemic change of lower limbs.

Reconciling trajectory ensemble receptor model results with emissions.

Several approaches have been developed that use ensembles of air parcel back trajectories to identify likely source regions for contaminants observed at a downwind receptor site. Although the results of these models have appeared to provide results that agree with known sources, there have not been efforts to make direct comparisons between the results of such analyses with emissions inventories. In this paper, the results of residence time analysis (RTA) of data from Underhill, VT and from Brigantine, NJ are compared to the average estimated emissions of coal- and oil-fired power plants. Excellent correspondence was found between the areas of highest probability identified in the trajectory ensemble analyses and the averaged emission intensities.

Evidence for a significant urbanization effect on climate in China.

China has experienced rapid urbanization and dramatic economic growth since its reform process started in late 1978. In this article, we present evidence for a significant urbanization effect on climate based on analysis of impacts of land-use changes on surface temperature in southeast China, where rapid urbanization has occurred. Our estimated warming of mean surface temperature of 0.05 degrees C per decade attributable to urbanization is much larger than previous estimates for other periods and locations. The spatial pattern and magnitude of our estimate are consistent with those of urbanization characterized by changes in the percentage of urban population and in satellite-measured greenness.

Dysregulation of protein modification by ISG15 results in brain cell injury.

UBP43 (USP18) is a protease that removes the ubiquitin-like modifier ISG15 from conjugated proteins. Here we present the first report of dysregulation of protein ISG15 modification by the generation of UBP43 knockout mice. In the absence of UBP43, brain tissue showed an elevated level of ISG15 conjugates, and cellular necrosis was evident in the ependyma. Such disruption of the blood-brain barrier resulted in severe neurologic disorders. These results demonstrate that UBP43 plays a critical role in maintaining the homeostatic balance of ISG15-conjugated protein, and that regulation of cellular levels of ISG15 protein modification is essential for brain cell function.

Reinforcing efficacy of food on performance during pre- and postmeal sessions.

Assessments were conducted to identify preferred foods for 9 adults with severe to profound mental retardation. Subsequently, the reinforcing effects of each participant's most highly preferred food were evaluated during sessions conducted before and after lunch. Results showed that 4 participants' response rates were higher during premeal sessions than during postmeal sessions. By contrast, pre- and postmeal response rates were indistinguishable for the other 5 participants. These results indicate that the reinforcing efficacy of food may (but does not necessarily) diminish following meals and suggest that the influence of meal schedules should be examined on an individual basis when food is used as reinforcement during training sessions.
