Progressive inhibition by water deficit of cell wall extensibility and growth along the elongation zone of maize roots is related to increased lignin metabolism and progressive stelar accumulation of wall phenolics.

Water deficit caused by addition of polyethylene glycol 6000 at -0.5 MPa water potential to well-aerated nutrient solution for 48 h inhibited the elongation of maize (Zea mays) seedling primary roots. Segmental growth rates in the root elongation zone were maintained 0 to 3 mm behind the tip, but in comparison with well-watered control roots, progressive growth inhibition was initiated by water deficit as expanding cells crossed the region 3 to 9 mm behind the tip. The mechanical extensibility of the cell walls was also progressively inhibited. We investigated the possible involvement in root growth inhibition by water deficit of alterations in metabolism and accumulation of wall-linked phenolic substances. Water deficit increased expression in the root elongation zone of transcripts of two genes involved in lignin biosynthesis, cinnamoyl-CoA reductase 1 and 2, after only 1 h, i.e. before decreases in wall extensibility. Further increases in transcript expression and increased lignin staining were detected after 48 h. Progressive stress-induced increases in wall-linked phenolics at 3 to 6 and 6 to 9 mm behind the root tip were detected by comparing Fourier transform infrared spectra and UV-fluorescence images of isolated cell walls from water deficit and control roots. Increased UV fluorescence and lignin staining colocated to vascular tissues in the stele. Longitudinal bisection of the elongation zone resulted in inward curvature, suggesting that inner, stelar tissues were also rate limiting for root growth. We suggest that spatially localized changes in wall-phenolic metabolism are involved in the progressive inhibition of wall extensibility and root growth and may facilitate root acclimation to drying environments.

The spatially variable inhibition by water deficit of maize root growth correlates with altered profiles of proton flux and cell wall pH.

Growth of elongating primary roots of maize (Zea mays) seedlings was approximately 50% inhibited after 48 h in aerated nutrient solution under water deficit induced by polyethylene glycol 6000 at -0.5 MPa water potential. Proton flux along the root elongation zone was assayed by high resolution analyses of images of acid diffusion around roots contacted for 5 min with pH indicator gel. Profiles of root segmental elongation correlated qualitatively and quantitatively (r(2) = 0.74) with proton flux along the surface of the elongation zone from water-deficit and control treatments. Proton flux and segmental elongation in roots under water deficit were remarkably well maintained in the region 0 to 3 mm behind the root tip and were inhibited from 3 to 10 mm behind the tip. Associated changes in apoplastic pH inside epidermal cell walls were measured in three defined regions along the root elongation zone by confocal laser scanning microscopy using a ratiometric method. Finally, external acidification of roots was shown to specifically induce a partial reversal of growth inhibition by water deficit in the central region of the elongation zone. These new findings, plus evidence in the literature concerning increases induced by acid pH in wall-extensibility parameters, lead us to propose that the apparently adaptive maintenance of growth 0 to 3 mm behind the tip in maize primary roots under water deficit and the associated inhibition of growth further behind the tip are related to spatially variable changes in proton pumping into expanding cell walls.

[Application of complexity sequence in sleep staging based on sleep EEG data].

In this paper an approach of time-window complexity sequence is applied to sleep EEG analysis. This approach can reduce the loss of state information due to the nonstationarity of EEG signal and the unevenness of state space, and can overcome certain limitations of the complexity itself to some extent. It will help to extract the state features of EEG in different sleep stages. In addition, we preprocess EEG by adopting ICA and wavelet transform (WT). The results show that some physiological artifact in EEG can be eliminated effectively by these methods, and the sleep staging based on sleep EEG data will be more exact.

[Study on intrapartum service model during normal labor].

OBJECTIVE: To study the availability of humanized service and healthy birth and it's effect on maternal and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: A multicenteral prospective randomized control study was carried out in 9 maternity hospitals from Nov. 2000 to June 2001. 6,758 laboring women were randomly divided into study group and control group. In study group (n = 3,437), midwives accompany laboring women in whole course of birth until two hours after delivery. According WHO "Monitoring rules for normal birth" medical staff support the mothers in physiological, psychological and physical aspects. In control group (n = 3,321) mothers receive traditional management. Midwives visit and check the mothers discoutinually. In two groups husbands can company laboring women according women's requirement. A questionnaire will be filled on the second day after birth. RESULTS: In study group the spontaneous delivery rate was significant higher than that of control group (85.5% vs 66.0%, P < 0.01). The cesarean section rate, postpartum hemorrhage rate, neonatal asphyxia rate and neonatal morbidity were marked lower in study group than those of control group (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Appropriate mode of intrapartum care can decrease the cesarean section rate and promote the vaginal delivery, also it can improve the maternal and neonatal outcomes.

[Eliminating artifacts of EEG data based on independent component analysis].

As a new array processing technique, independent component analysis(ICA) is an effective means to resolve the blind source separation(BSS) problem. Based on the brief introductions of ICA theory and algorithm, we apply ICA to the removal of ocular artifacts from EEG recordings. The EEG data collected from the human scalp is actually the mixtures of some independent components. It is coincident with the basic assumptions of ICA. Compared with the traditional methods of artifacts elimination, ICA, a kind of spatial filter, is not restricted by the case of spectrum overlapping, and it has a good reservation of useful detail signals. In addition, the inverse weight matrix of ICA can be used to reflect the topographic structure of different independent sources of EEG.

[Clinical observation on treatment of postpartum hemorrhage by xuesaitong soft capsule].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Xuesaitong (XST) soft capsule in treating postpartum hemorrhage. METHODS: Sixty pregnant women were randomly divided into the treated group (A) and the control group (B), 30 cases in each, they were treated with XST and placebo respectively for 7 days to observe the changes of hemorrhagic conditions. RESULTS: After delivery, the hemoglobin, RBC count, hematocrit and cardiac index were lower at 3rd day than those before delivery in both groups (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), reticulocyte count lowered insignificantly as compared with that before delivery in group A but significantly in control group B; the bleeding time shortened significantly in group A (P < 0.05) but unchanged in group B; significant change of blood viscosity only found in group B (P < 0.05). The amount of bleeding 30 min, 1 hr, 2 hrs and 24 hrs after delivery in group A was all lower than that in group B respectively (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). Involution of uterus in group A at 2nd, 4th and 7th day after delivery was all better than that in group B respectively (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: XST has definite effect in decreasing postpartum hemorrhage, it also shows effects in promoting involution of uterus, reducing lochia and accelerating recovery of parturients.
