Characterizing the gut microbiome of diarrheal mink under farmed conditions: A metagenomic analysis.

This study aimed to comprehensively characterize the gut microbiota in diarrheal mink. We conducted Shotgun metagenomic sequencing on samples from five groups of diarrheal mink and five groups of healthy mink. The microbiota α-diversity and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) orthology did not show significant differences between the groups. However, significant differences were observed in microbiota β-diversity and the function of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) between diarrheal and healthy mink. Specifically, The relative abundance of Firmicutes was lower, whereas that of Bacteroidetes was higher in diarrheal mink. Fusobacteria were enriched as invasive bacteria in the gut of diarrheal mink compared with healthy mink. In addition, Escherichia albertii was identified as a new bacterium in diarrheal mink. Regarding functions, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism and glycoside hydrolases 2 (GH2) family were the enhanced KEGG orthology and CAZymes in diarrheal mink. Furthermore, the diversity and number of antibiotic-resistant genes were significantly higher in the diarrheal mink group than in the healthy group. These findings enhance our understanding of the gut microbiota of adult mink and may lead to new approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of mink diarrhea.

[Use of calcium sulfate as internal matrix to repair furcal perforations].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of internal matrix on sealing ability and furcal appearance of perforations repair with amalgam and resin. METHODS: Perforations created in the pulpal floor of human extracted molars were repaired as follows: Amalgam, amalgam plus calcium sulfate, light-cured resin, and resin plus calcium sulfate (15 teeth/group). The furcal appearance of samples was evaluated under an operating microscope after repair. With the leakage test device, coronal 1 mol/L glucose solution was forced toward the pulpal floor. Leakage was measured by the concentration of leaked glucose in bottom reservoir at 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 15 and 20 days with enzymatic glucose oxidase method. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between group 1 and group 2 (P > 0.05). Leakage in group 4 was obviously lower than group 3 (P < 0.05) after the 7th day. CONCLUSION: Calcium sulfate significantly improved the sealing effect of resin and provided successful barriers against its overextension.

[Bilateral wedge-shaped cordectomy for treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: A clinical evaluation of CO2 laser endoscopic bilateral posterior wedge-shaped cordectomy (EBPC) in patients with severely compromised airway due to bilateral paralysis of the vocal fold. METHOD: The CO2 laser EBPC was performed in four cases of bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Follow-up has ranged from five months to 36 months. RESULT: Three patients achieved satisfactory airway after one laser procedure and one patient received second laser operation to manage her posterior webbing. Final voice quality was subjectively good in all patients. CONCLUSION: The authors' data confirm the safety, ease of performance, and efficiency of the CO2 laser EBPC in patients with bilateral vocal fold paralysis. The advantages of the procedure are simplicity in concept, reliability of outcome, no need for prophylactic tracheotomy, low risk of complications, adequate airway and good voice preservation. CO2 laser endoscopic bilateral posterior wedge-shaped cordotomy is an alternative management option for relief of upper airway obstruction due to bilateral vocal cord paralysis in abduction. The procedure is worthy to apply in clinical use.

[Multiple dipole source localization from spatio-temporal EEG data by Quasi-Newton-ICA method].

We have investigated spatio-temporal source modeling (STSM) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) by using a Quasi-Newton method based on Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for localization of multiple dipole sources from the scalp EEG. The problem of multiple dipole localization was transformed into several single dipole localization problems. Another benefit of the present method is that the number of independent sources can be estimated. Computer simulation studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of this approach. The present simulation results indicate that the ICA-based method is superior to the conventional nonlinear methods in localization accuracy, computation time and anti-noise performance, for multiple dipole localization when the sources are stationary over the period of interest.

[Models and computation methods of EEG forward problem].

The research of EEG is of grat significance and clinical importance in studying the cognitive function and neural activity of the brain. There are two key problems in the field of EEG, EEG forward problem and EEG inverse problem. EEG forward problem which aims to get the distribution of the scalp potential due to the known current distribution in the brain is the basis of the EEG inverse problem. Generally, EEG inverse problem depends on the accuracy and efficiency of the computational method of EEG forward problem. This paper gives a review of the head model and corresponding computational method about EEG forward problem studied in recent years.

Interruption of HBV intrauterine transmission: a clinical study.

AIM: To investigate the effect of hepatitis B virus (HBV) specific immunoglobin (HBIG) and lamivudine on HBV intrauterine transmission in HBsAg positive pregnant women. METHODS: Each subject in the HBIG group (56 cases) was given 200 IU HBIG intramuscularly (im.) every 4 weeks from 28-week (wk) of gestation, while each subject in the lamivudine group (43 cases) received 100 mg lamivudine orally (po.) every day from 28-wk of gestation until the 30(th) day after labor. Subjects in the control group (52 cases) received no specific treatment. Blood specimens were tested for HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBV-DNA in all maternities at 28-wk of gestation, before delivery, and in their newborns 24 hours before the administration of immune prophylaxis. RESULTS: Reductions of HBV DNA in both treatments were significant (P<0.05). The rate of neonatal intrauterine HBV infection was significantly lower in HBIG group (16.1 %) and lamivudine group (16.3 %) compared with control group (32.7 %) (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between HBIG group and lamivudine group (P>0.05). No side effects were found in all the pregnant women or their newborns. CONCLUSION: The risk of HBV intrauterine infection can be effectively reduced by administration of HBIG or Lamivudine in the 3(rd) trimester of HBsAg positive pregnant women.

[Hippocampal formations, amygdala and anterior temporal lobes: normative volumetric measurements from MR imaging in normal adults of China].

OBJECTIVE: To define the normal range of volumetric values of hippocampal formations (HPF), amygdala (AM) and anterior temporal lobes (ATL). METHODS: One hundred and two Chinese normal adults underwent MRI scan on oblique coronal section. Volumes of the anterior temporal lobes, hippocampal formations and amygdala were obtained on T1WI. The mean values and the range of 95% normal values were obtained by statistical data processing and analysis. RESULTS: The mean values of standardized volumes of anterior temporal lobes in the subjects aged 20 yr.-, 40 yr.- and > or = 60 yr. were: 59.07 +/- 2.02 cm3, 55.55 +/- 2.23 cm3, 52.88 +/- 2.07 cm3 (Right); 57.25 +/- 2.15 cm3, 53.23 +/- 1.72 cm3, 51.63 +/- 2.18 cm3 (Left); and of amygdala in those aged 20 yr.-, 40 yr.- and > or = 60 yr. were: 1.54 +/- 0.09 cm3, 1.38 +/- 0.08 cm3, 1.29 +/- 0.09 cm3 (R); 1.37 +/- 0.09 cm3, 1.29 +/- 0.08 cm3, 1.23 +/- 0.09 cm3(L). The 95% normal values of HPF in the subjects aged 20 yr.- ranged from 2.52 to 3.11 cm3(R), and from 2.40 to 2.98 cm3(L); in those aged > or = 60 yr. ranged from 2.33 to 2.65 cm3 (R) and from 1.98 to 2.64 cm3(L). There was no significant difference in the volumes of hippocampal formations between two groups under 60 yr.. And a decrease of the volumes of hippocampal formations could been seen in the > or = 60 yr. group. No significant difference in the volumes of hippocampal formations, amygdala and anterior temporal lobes was seen in the sex groups and handedness groups. CONCLUSION: The data on standardized volumes of HPF, AM, ATL in this study can serve as a foundation on which to provide normal index and useful guidelines for reference in early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and temporal lobe epilepsy.

Structural Characterizations of Organo-Capped Barium Titanate Nanoparticles Prepared by the Wet Chemical Route.

In the present study, nanoscale barium titanate particles were chemically prepared with organic shells on their surfaces. Their chemical and physical structures were characterized by FT-IR, FT-Raman, XRD, and XPS. Based on the results of characterizations, it can be concluded that the presence of organic ligands greatly influences the nucleation and surface chemistry of BaTiO(3) nanoparticles. Surface Ti(4+) tends to bond to stearate ions instead of the previous Ba(2+) in the starting materials. The usual preferable orientation growths of lattice, i.e., (101), (111), and (200), were significantly restrained due to surface coordination. Although poor crystallinity was observed, a tetragonal phase of BaTiO(3) nuclei could be inferred from both XRD and Raman patterns. Finally, the formation mechanism and structural model of organo-capped nanoparticles are discussed. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.
