Synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of luminescent platinum(II) complexes containing cyclometalated 4-styryl-functionalized 2-phenylpyridine ligands.

A series of new luminescent cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes functionalized with various substituted styryl groups on the cyclometallating ligand [Pt(C/\N-ppy-4-styryl-R)(O/\O-(O)CCR'CHCR'C(O))] (ppy-4-styryl-R = E-4(4-(R)styryl-2-phenylpyridine) (3, R' = Me (acac); 4, R' = (t)Bu (dpm); R = H, OMe, NEt2, NO2) have been prepared. All complexes undergo an E-Z photoisomerization process in CH2Cl2 solution under sunlight, as monitored by 1H NMR. The solid-state structures of 3-OMe, 3-NEt2, 3-NO2, and 4-OMe have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies and compare well with optimized geometries obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The orbital pictures of 3-H, 3-OMe, and 3-NO 2 are very similar, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) being highly Pt(5d) metal-based. For 3-NMe2, an additional contribution from the amino-styryl fragment leads to a decreased metal parentage of the HOMO, suggesting a predominantly ILCT character transition. Complexes 3-H, 3-OMe, and 3-NO2 show a low-energy band (350-400 nm) assigned to predominantly charge-transfer transitions. The amino derivative 3-NEt2 displays a very strong absorption band at 432 nm, tentatively assigned to a mixture of ILCT (Et2N --> CH=CH) and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) (dpi(Pt) --> pi) transitions. Complexes 3 are weakly luminescent in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature; the low intensity may be due to a competitive quenching through the E-Z photoisomerization process. All complexes exhibit similar structured emission bands under these conditions (around 520 nm), independent of the nature of the styryl-R group. In a frozen EPA glass (77 K), the spectrum of the representative complex 3-H exhibits two sets of vibronically structured bands (460-560, 570-800 nm; lambda(max) = 596 nm), due to the presence of two emitting species, the E and Z isomers, which have significantly different triplet excited-state energies. The other three complexes show similar behavior to 3-H at 77 K, but the lower-energy emission bands are progressively red-shifted in the order H < OMe < NO2 < NEt2 (e.g., for 3-NEt2, lambda(max)(em) = 658 nm; tau = 26 micros). The very large red-shift compared to related unsubstituted complexes (e.g., to [Pt(C/\N-ppy)(O/\O-acac)]) is the result of the extension of the pi-conjugated system and the electronic effects of substituent R.

The domino chemistry approach to molecular complexity: competing domino processes modulated by the substitution pattern.

Oxidative cleavage with lead tetraacetate results in the synthesis of different oxygen heterocycles starting from the same unsaturated 1,2-diol of type I by tuning of the substitution pattern at the angular position. When this compound bears a functional substituent, such as an alkoxy, ester, alkenyl, or simply a hydrogen, more than one reaction pathway are in competition. The process allows for the selective formation of three different complex ring systems, by the appropriate choice of the angular substituent, leading to either a ring-expanded type 1, ring-retained type 2, or domino products 3.

Synthesis, structural studies, theoretical calculations, and linear and nonlinear optical properties of terpyridyl lanthanide complexes: new evidence for the contribution of f electrons to the NLO activity.

The synthesis and structural, photophysical, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a novel lanthanide terpyridyl-like complex family LLn(NO(3))(3) (Ln = La, Gd, Dy, Yb, and Y) are reported. The isostructural character of this series in solution and in the solid state has been established on the basis of X-ray diffraction analysis in the cases of yttrium and gadolinium complexes, theoretical optimization of geometry (DFT), and NMR spectroscopy. The absorption, emission, and solvatochromic properties of the free terpyridyl-like ligand L were thoroughly investigated, and the twist intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) character of the lowest energy transition was confirmed by theoretical calculation (TDDFT and CIS). The similar ionochromic effect of the different lanthanide ions was evidenced by the similar UV-visible spectra of the complete family of complexes. On the other hand, the quadratic hyperpolarizability coefficient beta, measured by the harmonic light scattering (HLS) technique, is clearly dependent on the nature of the metal, and a careful examination of the particular case of yttrium unambiguously confirms the contribution of metal f electrons to the NLO activity.

Novel tert-butyl-tris(3-hydrocarbylpyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands: synthesis, spectroscopic studies, and coordination chemistry.

The lithium (1) and thallium (2) salts of five new tert-butyl-tris(3-hydrocarbylpyrazol-1-yl)borate ligands [t-BuTp(R)]- (R = H, a; Me, b; i-Pr, c; t-Bu, d; Ph, e) have been synthesized and characterized. Because of steric congestion at B, the reaction between t-BuBH3Li x 0.5 Et2O and excess 2,5-dimethylpyrazole Hpz(Me2) afforded the bis-pz(Me2) derivative, Tl[t-BuBH(3,5-Me2pz)2] (3) after metathesis with TlNO3. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The Li salts 1a and 1c exhibit fluxional behavior on the NMR time scale in solution at room temperature. The solid-state 7Li and 11B NMR spectra of 1c suggest that this salt exists as a mixture of axial and equatorial isomers. The partial hydrolysis of 1d afforded the dimeric Li complex {Li[t-BuB(pz(t-Bu))2(mu-OH)]}2 (4). The crystal structure of 4 shows two Li cations encapsulated by the heteroscorpionate [t-BuB(OH)(3-t-Bupz)2]- ligands. A salt elimination reaction between FeCl2(THF)1.5 and 2 equiv of Li[t-BuTp(R)] (R = H, Me) followed by an in situ one-electron oxidation produced good yields of the homoleptic, paramagnetic low-spin iron(III) complexes [Fe(t-BuTp)2]PF6 (5) and [Fe(t-BuTp(Me))2]PF6 (6) that were characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility measurements in solution and the solid phase, 1H NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are composed of discrete molecular units with the central Fe(III) ion in an almost perfectly octahedral coordination to six nitrogen atoms. Compound 5 has the shortest Fe-N bond lengths ever reported for [Fe(RTp(R)')2]+-type compounds.

Molecular rotors: design, synthesis, structural analysis, and silver complex of new [7.7]cyclophanes.

New molecular rotors, [7.7](2,6)pyridinocyclophanes (monomers and dimers) embedding 1,3-dioxanes in the bridges, were investigated by variable-temperature NMR, molecular modeling, and single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. The nitrogen-inside rotation of the pyridine ring is more hindered in the derivatives with longer distance between the bridges (i.e., para > meta and 2,6-pyridylene > ortho) and can be chemically stopped by complexation with CF(3)SO(3)Ag. Photoisomerizable bipyridine ligands and macroligands: absorption, photoisomerization properties and theoretical study.

Two 2,2'-bipyridines, substituted at the 4,4'-positions by p-dialkylaminophenylazostyryl moieties p-R2N-C6H4-N=N-C6H4-CH=CH-[6 a, R2N=nBu2N; 6 b, R2N=(nBu)(C4H8OTHP)N; 6 c, R2N=(nBu)(C4H8OH)N], were successfully synthesized by using Wadworth-Emmons reactions. The X-ray structure of 6 a has been determined. Esterification of 6 c with 2-bromoisobutyroylbromide afforded 6 d. This ligand was used as an initiator for the living radical polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) and gave rise to macroligand 6 e. Thin films of good optical quality were obtained by the spin-coating technique. Photoisomerization experiments were carried out on 6 a in solution and on 6 e in both solution and film, and the kinetics of photochemical (E/Z) and thermal (Z/E) isomerization were investigated. They were found to show Z-E back isomerization typical of aminoazobenzene-type rather than of push-pull-type molecules. Density functional theoretical (TD-DFT) calculations were performed on model compound 6 a' (R2N=Me2N) to understand the structural and electronic transitions of the corresponding E-E, E-Z and Z-Z isomers. It was found that the E-E isomer is almost planar as observed experimentally by X-ray diffraction, whereas the Z-Z isomer, which is 35.4 kcal mol(-1) less stable than the E-E isomer, is nonplanar. The theoretical studies also reveal that several transitions of pi-pi*, n-pi* and charge-transfer (CT) types, are involved in the long-wavelength transition of 6 a (E-E). The same observations can be made for the (Z-Z) isomer, and the TD-DFT simulated spectrum fits quite nicely to the experimental, reproducing and explaining the apparition of a blue-shifted charge-transfer band at 390 nm.

Lanthanide complexes for second order nonlinear optics: evidence for the direct contribution of f electrons to the quadratic hyperpolarizability.

This study descibes for the first time the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of multipolar lanthanide complexes, Na3[Ln(dipic)3]. The "metal-induced" NLO activity enhancement is confirmed as a general property of f-block elements, and the direct participation of f electrons to the hyperpolarizability beta is strongly supported by experimental data.

An opened route to 1,3-dimethylenecyclobutanes via sequential ruthenium-catalyzed [2 + 2] cycloaddition of allenyl boronate and palladium Suzuki coupling.

The regioselective head-to-head [2 + 2] cyclodimerization of allenyl boronate catalyzed by the ruthenium catalyst [Cp*RuCl(COD)] leads to a novel diboronated 1,3-dimethylenecyclobutane. Consecutive palladium-catalyzed C-C couplings open a route to novel disubstituted 1,3-dimethylenecyclobutane species. The X-ray crystalline structure of the phenyl-substituted 1,3-dimethylenecyclobutane is provided.

Tandem catalytic carbene addition/bicyclization of enynes. One-step synthesis of fluorinated bicyclic amino esters by ruthenium catalysis.

The reaction of diazo compounds with enynes, containing a fluorinated amino acid moiety, in the presence of the precatalyst Cp(Cl)Ru(COD) leads to fluorinated alkenyl bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane and [4.1.0]heptane amino acid derivatives. It is remarkable that the catalyst, in situ generated from ruthenium complex and diazo compound, completely inhibits the ring closing metathesis of enyne to the profit of tandem alkenylation/cyclopropanation with high stereoselectivity. The study shows that the Cp(Cl)Ru moiety in ruthenacyclobutane favors reductive elimination versus expected alkene metathesis. [reaction: see text]

1,5-Diphenyl-4,8-bis(3-phenylpyrazol-1-yl)pyrazabole.

The six-membered B2H4 ring of the title compound, C36H30B2N8, adopts a slightly distorted boat conformation, with the terminal B substituents in a trans orientation. One 3-phenylpyrazolyl group is in an equatorial position, whereas the second is in an axial position with respect to the plane defined by the B atoms.

Ruthenium-catalyzed synthesis of alkylidenecyclobutenes via head-to-head dimerization of propargylic alcohols and cyclobutadiene-ruthenium intermediates.

The reaction of propargylic alcohols with carboxylic acid, or phenol derivatives, in the presence of the precatalyst [RuCl(cod)(C5Me5)] leads selectively to a variety of alkylidenecyclobutenes through head-to-head dimerization of propargylic alcohol. The first step is the formation of a cyclobutadiene-ruthenium intermediate resulting from the head-to-head coupling of two molecules of propargylic alcohol. On protonation with strong acids (HPF6, HBF4) dehydration of the cyclobutadiene complex leads to formation of an alkylidenecyclobutenyl-ruthenium complex. The X-ray structure of one such complex, [RuCl(C5Me5)(eta4-R'CCH--CH--C=CR2)] (R'=cyclohexen-1-yl, CR2 = cyclohexylidene) has been determined. Carboxylate is added at the less substituted carbon of the cyclic allylic ligand. DFT/B3 LYP calculations confirm that the intermediate arising from head-to-head coupling of alkyne to the RuClCp* species yields the cyclobutadiene-ruthenium complex more easily with propargylic alcohol than with acetylene.

Generation of cationic [Zr-[tert-butyl enolate]] reactive species: methyl abstraction versus hydride abstraction.

Treatment of the neutral methyl-Zr-enolate [Cp(2)Zr(Me)[O(tBuO)C=CMe(2)]] (1) with one equivalent of B(C(6)F(5))(3) or [HNMe(2)Ph][B(C(6)F(5))(4)] as a methyl abstractor in THF at 0 degrees C leads to the selective formation of the free ion pair complex [Cp(2)Zr(THF)[O(tBuO)C=CMe(2)]](+) [anion](-) (2) (anion=MeB(C(6)F(5))(3) (-), B(C(6)F(5))(4) (-)), which is relevant to the controlled polymerization of methacrylates. Cation 2 rapidly decomposes at 20 degrees C in THF with release of one equivalent of isobutene to form the cationic Zr-carboxylate species [Cp(2)Zr(THF)(O(2)CiPr)](+) (3), through a proposed intramolecular proton transfer process from the tert-butoxy group to the enolate. The reaction of 1 with one equivalent of B(C(6)F(5))(3) or [HNMe(2)Ph][B(C(6)F(5))(4)] in CH(2)Cl(2) leads to the direct, rapid formation of the dimeric micro-isobutyrato-Zr dicationic species [[Cp(2)Zr[micro-(O(2)CiPr)]](2)](2+) (4), which gives 3 upon dissolution in THF. Contrastingly, when [Ph(3)C][B(C(6)F(5))(4)] is used to generate the cationic Zr-enolate species from 1 in CD(2)Cl(2), a 15:85 mixture of dicationic complexes 4 and [[Cp(2)Zr[micro-(O(2)C-C(Me)=CH(2))]](2)](2+)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)]]2-(5-[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](2)) is obtained quantitatively. The formation of 5 is proposed to arise from initial hydride abstraction from a methyl enolate group by Ph(3)C(+), as supported by the parallel production of Ph(3)CH, and subsequent elimination of methane and isobutene. In addition to standard spectroscopic and analytical characterizations for the isolated complexes 2-5, complexes 4 and 5 have also been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction studies.

Structural characterisation of the first mononuclear bismuth porphyrin.

A single carboxylate picket bismuth porphyrin has been characterised in the solid state as the first instance of a non-dimeric structure; the carboxylate picket, bent over the macrocycle, is coordinated to the bismuth, inducing a significant distortion of the porphyrin core.
