Stereocontrolled synthesis and cycloaddition of 1,2,4-trioxygenated 1,3-dienes.

A new stereocontrolled synthetic pathway to 1,2,4-trioxygenated 1,3-dienes from pyruvic aldehyde dimethyl acetal (14a) is described. Reacting the cyclohexylamine-derived imine of this starting material with chloroalkyl ethers under basic conditions affords ketoacetals 18-20, which were then transformed into eight different enoxysilanes 12. A delta-elimination triggered by tert-butyllithium yields 1,2,4-trioxygenated dienes 13. Increasing the bulkiness of the silyloxy group or that of the acetal moiety leads stereoselectively to the (1E,3E) or (1Z,3E) isomers of 13, respectively. Hyperbaric [4 + 2] cycloadditions between 13 (13c, 13d, 13g) and N-methylmaleimide or methyl- and phenylacrylates give access to the expected cycloadducts with fine stereo- and regiocontrol.

Di-organoiron mixed valent complexes featuring "(eta2-dppe)(eta5-C5Me5)Fe" endgroups: smooth class-III to class-II transition induced by successive insertion of 1,4-phenylene units in a butadiyne-diyl bridge.

The synthesis and study of a new redox family of symmetric dinuclear iron(II/III) complexes featuring "(eta(2)-dppe)(eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Fe(CC)" endgroups connected by a bis(diethynyl)-4,4'-biphenyl spacer are reported. The solid-state structures were determined (X-rays) for the homovalent Fe(II)/Fe(II) and Fe(III)/Fe(III) parents. In contrast, the mixed valent (MV) complex 5[PF(6)] has a low thermodynamic stability (Kc around 10) and cannot be isolated in a pure form, but was studied in solution. According to the Robin and Day classification, it constitutes a remarkable example of well-behaved weakly coupled class-II organometallic MV compound. The photodriven metal-metal electron-transfer process takes place over ca. 16 A and corresponds to an electronic coupling of ca. 150 cm(-1) with a reorganization energy of ca. 6250 cm(-1) in dichloromethane. A similar investigation was also conducted in the near-IR range for the known and much more stable MV analogue 3[PF(6)] featuring the 1,4-phenyl unit instead of the 4,4'-biphenyl one (K(c) = 2.6 10(4)). The latter also exhibits a localized valency, but presents a very intense intervalence charge-transfer band (IVCT) with a cutoff on the low-energy side. A much stronger electronic coupling is derived (ca. 1700 cm(-1)) from the band shape for this MV complex in the frame of the two-level model. Although slowed, the electron exchange is not disrupted by insertion of an additional para-phenylene moiety into a 1,4-diethynylaryl bridge. Thus, starting from a compound with a butadiyne-diyl spacer, stepwise para-phenylene insertions in the bridge produce a smooth Class-III to Class-II transition for the corresponding MV complexes.

A new approach to A,B-difunctionalisation of cyclodextrins using bulky 1,3-bis[bis(aryl)chloromethyl]benzenes as capping reagents.

1,3-Bis[bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)chloromethyl]benzene and 1,3-bis[bis(4-anisyl)chloromethyl]benzene were employed as regioselective capping reagents for the preparation of C-6A,C-6B-bridged, permethylated alpha- and beta-CD derivatives; isolated yields up to 55% of proximally capped, methylated CDs were obtained, thus opening the way to the straightforward preparation of a wide range of A,B-functionalised CDs. As revealed by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study, the benzene-1,3-bis[bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)methyl] spacer is perfectly suited for A,B-capping of beta-cyclodextrin.

Connecting pi-chromophores by sigma-P-P bonds: new type of assemblies exhibiting sigma-pi-conjugation.

To study the ability of sigma-P-P skeleton to mediate interaction between pi-chromophores, 1,1'-biphospholes bearing phenyl or thienyl substituents at the 2,2' and 5,5'-position have been prepared and studied. These air-stable derivatives are readily available via a "one-pot" synthesis starting from diynes. Theoretical studies and UV-vis data clearly establish that the two pi-systems interact via the sigma-P-P bridge. This through-bond interaction results in a lowering of the optical HOMO-LUMO gap of the assemblies. The nucleophilic sigma(3)-P centers of these 1,1'-biphospholes allow chemical modifications of the sigma-bridge. These modifications offer further tuning of the optical properties of the assembly. Electrooxidation of the thienyl-substituted 1,1'-biphosphole results in electroactive materials characterized by low optical band gap and reversible p-doping.

Preparation, structures and some reactions of novel diynyl complexes of iron and ruthenium.

Reactions between HC triple bond CC triple bond CSiMe3 and several ruthenium halide precursors have given the complexes Ru(C triple bond CC triple bond CSiMe3)(L2)Cp'[Cp'= Cp, L = CO (1), PPh3 (2); Cp' = Cp*, L2= dppe (3)]. Proto-desilylation of 2 and 3 have given unsubstituted buta-1,3-diyn-1-yl complexes Ru(C triple bond CC triple bond CH)(L2)Cp'[Cp'= Cp, L = PPh3 (5); Cp'= Cp*, L2 = dppe (6)]. Replacement of H in 5 or 6 with Au(PR3) groups was achieved in reactions with AuCl(PR3) in the presence of KN(SiMe3)2 to give Ru(C triple bond CC triple bond CAu(PR3)](L2)Cp'[Cp' = Cp, L = PPh3, R = Ph (7); Cp' = Cp*, L2= dppe, R = Ph (8), tol (9)]. The asymmetrically end-capped [Cp(Ph3P)2Ru]C triple bond CC triple bond C[Ru(dppe)Cp*] (10) was obtained from Ru(C triple bond CC triple bond CH)(dppe)Cp* and RuCl(PPh3)2Cp. Single-crystal X-ray structural determinations of and are reported, with a comparative determination of the structure of Fe(C triple bond CC triple bond CSiMe3)(dppe)Cp* (4), and those of a fifth polymorph of [Ru(PPh3)2Cp]2(mu-C triple bond CC triple bond C) (12), and [Ru(dppe)Cp]2(mu-C triple bond CC triple bond C) (13).

Bonding and electronic structure in consanguineous and conjugal iron and rhenium sp carbon chain complexes [MC4M'](n)+: computational analyses of the effect of the metal.

Density functional theory has been used to probe the bonding and electronic properties of the homo- and heterobimetallic sp carbon chain complexes (ML(m), = (eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(eta(2)-R(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PR(2))Fe, (eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(NO)(PR(3))Re; z = 0-4). All neutral complexes are best described by MCtbd1;CCtbd1;CM electronic structures, in accord with much experimental data. The singlet dications are best described by cumulenic (+)M=C=C=C=C=M(+) valence formulations. However, the diiron and rhenium/iron dications are found to possess triplet states of nearly identical energy, clarifying experimental magnetic data. Their electronic structures have dominant *(+)MCtbd1;CCtbd1;CM(+)* character, with some spin delocalization onto the carbon chain. The mixed valence monocation radicals exhibit delocalized unpaired electrons, in accord with class III (strongly coupled) and II (weakly coupled) assignments made from experimental data earlier, with some spin density on the carbon chain. An isolable diiron trication has a doublet ground state, but some computational data suggest a close-lying quartet. For the unknown diiron tetracation, a bis(carbyne) or (2+)Fetbd1;CCtbd1;CCtbd1;Fe(2+) electronic structure is predicted. Calculated adiabatic ionization potentials show the iron endgroup to be more electron-releasing than rhenium, in accord with electrochemical data. This polarizes the electronic structures of the rhenium/iron complexes. To help validate the computed model structures, crystal structures of ((eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Fe(eta(2)-dppe))(2)(mu-C(4)) and [((eta(5)-C(5)Me(5))Fe(eta(2)-dippe))(2)(mu-C(4))](3+) 3PF(6)(-) are determined. Data are analyzed with respect to related diruthenium and dimanganese complexes.

A difluorosulfide as a Freon-free source of phosphonodifluoromethyl carbanion.

The synthesis of difluoromethylphosphonates is becoming difficult due to environmental protective laws restricting the use of HCFCs and CFCs as starting chemicals. To circumvent this limitation, we report the preparation of a thioether as a new source of the lithiodifluoromethylphosphonate. This methodology avoiding the use of HCFCs involves a selective fluorination of sulfide followed by a thiaphilic addition of an organometallic reagent, which offers an alternative route to obtain phosphonodifluoromethyl carbanion. A contrasted reactivity, due to a medium effect, was also noted which allows addition of a wide range of electrophiles including nitroalkenes and DMF to thioethers.

Laser-induced ferroelectric structural order in an organic charge-transfer crystal.

We report the direct observation by x-ray diffraction of a photoinduced paraelectric-to-ferroelectric structural phase transition using monochromatic 100-picosecond synchrotron pulses. It occurs in tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil, a charge-transfer molecular material in which electronic and structural changes are strongly coupled. An optical 300-femtosecond laser pulse switches the material from a neutral to an ionic state on a 500-picosecond time scale and, by virtue of intrinsic cooperativity, generates self-organized long-range structural order. The x-ray data indicate a macroscopic ferroelectric reorganization after the laser irradiation. Refinement of the structures before and after laser irradiation indicates structural changes at the molecular level.

Diastereoselective preparation of 2,4,6-trisubstituted-2'-cyanopiperidines: application to the construction of the carbon framework of perhydrohistrionicotoxin.

The anodic cyanation of methanolic solutions of the 2-alkyl-N-phenylpiperidines 6b-d was performed in a flow cell equipped with a graphite felt anode. The reaction led to the formation of the 2-cyano-6-alkyl-N-phenylpiperidines 2b-d and proceeded with a high degree of regioselectivity. The 1H NMR spectra of the aminonitriles 2b-d showed an epimeric mixture at C-6. The major isomer has a trans configuration in which the cyano group is axial and the alkyl substituent is equatorial. Conversely, electrochemical oxidation of the 4-methyl-6-pentyl-N-phenylpiperidine 6e afforded the trisubstituted aminonitrile 2e as a single diastereomer (> 98% de). The 4-cyanobutyl side chain was incorporated in a two-step procedure to yield dinitrile 4e. This latter compound was directly converted into spiropiperidine 5e by using the Thorpe-Ziegler annulation procedure. The overall sequence (4 steps, 43%) allows the construction of the basic carbon framework of perhydrohistrionicotoxin.

(5,10,15,20-Tetraphenylporphyrinato-kappa4N)bis(L-valine-kappaN methyl ester)iron(III) trifluoromethylsulfonate dichloromethane solvate.

The title compound, [Fe(C(44)H(28)N(4))(C(6)H(13)NO(2))(2)](CF(3)O(3)S).CH(2)Cl(2), is the first amino ester complex of iron porphyrins to be investigated using X-ray diffraction and it can be considered as a model complex of cytochrome f. The Fe atom is six-coordinate to four N atoms of the porphyrin ring and to two N atoms of the axial amino ester ligands.

Liquid-phase synthesis of polyhydroquinoline using task-specific ionic liquid technology.

A new strategy for the synthesis of polyhydroquinolines from task-specific ionic liquids (TSIL) as a soluble support was developed. The preparation of the polyhydroquinolines by a three-component reaction was achieved by using ionic liquid-phase bound beta-oxo esters. These starting functionalized esters were synthesized by a solventless transesterification without catalyst under microwave irradiation. The structure of the intermediates in each step was verified routinely by spectroscopic analysis, and after oxidation of the polyhydroquinolines grafted on the TSIL with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone or after cleavage (transesterification, saponification-acidification), the target compounds were obtained in good yields and high purities.
