[Recent advances on the study between steroids and brain function].

It is vital for steroid hormones synthesized in the gonad gland, adrenal gland and placenta to the development and physiological metabolism of the body. In particular, its regulatory effect on brain functions has attracted more and more attention, as nearly all the steroid hormones can be synthesized de novo in the brain. This means steroids derived from brain and peripheral gland can modulate the physiology and pathology of the brain reciprocally and importantly on many aspects such as learning and memory, synaptic transmission, neuroprotection, neurodegenerative diseases (especially Alzheimer's disease), emotion, stress, and menstrual-cycle-linked disorders. In the present review, some new advances are summarized.

Occupational health management and service for small-scale industries in Shanghai.

Because occupational hazards of small-scale industries were severe and the occupational health management lagged behind in Shanghai, we selected some districts as experimental units to explore a model of community management and service for the occupational health in small-scale industries for controlling occupational hazards. The results indicated that the model is useful. The features of occupational health in these small-scale industries have been improved markedly. For example, the monitoring rate of occupational hazards increased, the rate for occupational health recording and training also increased, and the knowledge of the occupational health among managers and employees has been also enhanced after implementing the new management model. The practice has shown that it is a low-cost and wide-covered, effective model. The communities may offer the standard, agreeable and low-price occupational health management and service to the small-scale industries which are able to pay the service fee although their economic base is comparatively weak. A solution for protecting the occupational population with relatively high mobility and keeping small-scale industries sustainable development has been reported.

Training in environmental health research for action: the Shanghai-California Environmental Health Training Program.

The Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention (SCDC) was created in 1998; in 2001, with support from Fogarty International Center, the intergovernmental Shanghai-California Environmental Health Training Program was formed. Providing U.S.-based training to SCDC managers allows them to return to Shanghai and share their knowledge. Indexing Chinese journals will enable more exchange of information and will support improvements in Chinese scholarship. Increased international contact will result in greater trust and more rapid warnings to international colleagues, with resultant faster responses to emerging public health threats. Building research capacity in SCDC will allow for more rapid translation of results to policy. The progress of the Program toward establishing a regional (Shanghai) biological specimen bank is an example of building institutional capacity to enhance research that can serve as a lasting foundation for public health research and policy decisions in both Shanghai and China.
