Improved analysis of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in water by purge-and-trap with gas chromatography and mass spectrometric detection.

An analytical system composed of a purge-and-trap injection system coupled to gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (PTI-GC-MS) specific for the analysis of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs) (chloroform; 1,1,1-trichloroethane; tetrachloromethane; 1,1,2-trichloroethylene; tetrachloroethylene) and trihalomethanes (THMs) (chloroform; bromodichloromethane; dibromochloromethane; bromoform) in water was optimised. Samples were purged and trapped in a cold trap (-100 degrees C) fed with liquid nitrogen (cryo-concentration). In order to make this method suitable also for only slightly contaminated waters, some modifications were made to PTI sample introduction, in order to avoid any air intake into the system. PTI, GC and MS conditions were optimised for halogenated compound analysis and limits of detection (LOD) were evaluated. The proposed method allows analysis of samples whose concentrations range from microg/L to ng/L. It is, therefore, applicable to drinking waters, in analyses required by law, and to slightly contaminated aqueous matrices, such as those found in remote areas, in environmental monitoring. Moreover, by changing cold trap temperature, even sparkling mineral waters can be analysed, thus avoiding CO2 interference during the cryo-concentration phase. Our method has been successfully used on real samples: tap water, mineral water and Antarctic snow.

Effects of a decaying cosmological fluctuation.

We present the initial conditions for a decaying cosmological perturbation and study its signatures in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and matter power spectra. An adiabatic decaying mode in the presence of components that are not described as perfect fluids (such as collisionless matter) decays slower than in a perfect-fluid dominated Universe and displays super-Hubble oscillations. Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe first year data constrain the decaying to growing ratio of scale invariant adiabatic fluctuations at the matter-radiation equality to less than 10%.

Phantom energy mediates a long-range repulsive force.

Scalar field models with nonstandard kinetic terms have been proposed in the context of k inflation, of Born-Infeld Lagrangians, of phantom energy and, more in general, of low-energy string theory. In general, scalar fields are expected to couple to matter inducing a new interaction. In this Letter I derive the cosmological perturbation equations and the Yukawa correction to gravity for such general models. I find three interesting results: first, when the field behaves as phantom energy (equation of state less than -1), then the coupling strength is negative, inducing a long-range repulsive force; second, the dark-energy field might cluster on astrophysical scales; third, applying the formalism to a Brans-Dicke theory with a general kinetic term it is shown that its Newtonian effects depend on a single parameter that generalizes the Brans-Dicke constant.

Skewness as a test of the equivalence principle.

The skewness of the large-scale distribution of matter has long been known to be a probe of gravitational clustering. Here we show that the skewness is also a probe of violation of the equivalence principle between dark matter and baryons. The predicted level of violation can be tested with the forthcoming data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Determination of clenbuterol in human urine by GC-MS-MS-MS: confirmation analysis in antidoping control.

This work presents a GC-MS-MS-MS method for the direct determination of clenbuterol in human urine. The method comprises a pretreatment procedure and the instrumental analysis of the derivatives performed by GC-MS(3) (ion trap) with electron impact ionization. The GC-MS(3) analysis allows isolation and characterization of specific fragments from the original (MS(1)) molecular structure, and in particular, those fragments originating from the precursor ion cluster (m/z=335-337) characteristic of clenbuterol. The MS(2) product fragment m/z=300 is in turn used as a further precursor fragment giving rise to a MS(3) spectrum specific for clenbuterol. MS(4) fragmentation spectra were also investigated. However, further fragmentation of MS(3) product ions does not lead to functional MS(4) spectra nor to any significant increase in the signal-to-noise ratio. The sensitivity limit of the MS(3) technique is lower than 0.2 microg/l, with a linear range between 0.5 and 5 microg/l, thus matching the basic requirements for antidoping analysis according to the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee. Due to its overall analytical performance, the method is presently being evaluated as a confirmation protocol to be followed to detect illicit clenbuterol administration to the athletes, and compared with reference GC-MS and GC-MS-MS techniques.

Correlated perturbations from inflation and the cosmic microwave background.

We compare the latest cosmic microwave background data with theoretical predictions including correlated adiabatic and cold dark matter (CDM) isocurvature perturbations with a simple power-law dependence. We find that there is a degeneracy between the amplitude of correlated isocurvature perturbations and the spectral tilt. A negative (red) tilt is found to be compatible with a larger isocurvature contribution. Estimates of the baryon and CDM densities are found to be almost independent of the isocurvature amplitude. The main result is that current microwave background data do not exclude a dominant contribution from CDM isocurvature fluctuations on large scales.
