The temporal relation between cigarette smoking and pancreatic cancer.

Temporal trends in US cigarette smoking prevalence rates 1920 to 1978, were related to temporal trends in US pancreatic cancer mortality rates in both sexes. In males, the rise and fall in smoking prevalence was followed by a rise and recent fall in cancer rates. In females, the later rise in smoking prevalence has been accompanied by a rise in cancer rate, and a recent slight decline in smoking rate has been associated with a slowing of the rise in cancer rate.

Coffee consumption and pancreatic cancer: temporal and spatial correlation.

An examination of available data on per caput consumption of coffee and pancreatic cancer mortality in the United States since 1950 shows a temporal association. A rise and fall in coffee consumption was followed by a rise and fall in the incidence of pancreatic cancer with roughly a 10-year lag. Nevertheless, there were inconsistencies in this relationship was also found between the consumption of coffee and pancreatic cancer mortality in 13 countries. While this relationship suggests an association, major inconsistencies case doubt on the possibility that it is one of cause and effect. This may be due to confounding, particularly by cigarette smoking and cancer of the pancreas is much more consistent with a causal relationship.

Patient-physician negotiation.

The low level of patient compliance with physician management regimens is widely recognized. Although numerous studies either have measured levels of noncompliance or have attempted to fathom the essential elements of patient-physician interaction, they do not indicate how complicance may be increased. Negotiation is a process by which two active and equal participants negotiate to obtain their respective goals (which are often at odds). Without appropriate negotiation, which requires the patient's active participation, the physician cannot hope to motivate the patient. Patients will continue to be noncompliant as long as they are treated as inferiors in the process.

A cohort analysis of pancreatic cancer, 1939--1969.

Pancreatic cancer mortality in the United States was examined by cohort analysis for the period of 1939 to 1969. Birth cohorts at 5-year intervals were studied. White males and non-whites of both sexes showed a shift of the cohort mortality rate curves by age toward younger groups as birth cohorts went from 1870--1874 to 1900--1904. This shift disappeared in white males and diminished in non-whites of both sexes between the cohorts of 1890--1894 and 1900--1904. The shift in non-whites was larger than in white males so that although non-whites had lower rates than whites in earlier birth cohorts, their rates exceeded those of whites in the most recent cohort. In the search for environmental cause(s) of pancreatic cancer, exposure characteristics should be compatible with these observations.

Kinetics and mechanism of bacterial disinfection by chlorine dioxide.

Survival data are presented for a fecal strain of Escherichia coli exposed to three concentrations of chlorine dioxide at four temperatures. Chick's first-order reaction equation is generalized to a pseudo nth-order model. Nonlinear least squares curve-fitting of the survival data to the nth order model was performed on an analogue computer. The data were observed to follow fractional order kinetics with respect to survival concentration, with an apparent activation energy of 12,000 cal/mole. Initial experiments support the thesis that the mechanism of chlorine dioxide kill occurs via disruption of protein synthesis.

Efficiency of chlorine dioxide as a bactericide.

We found chlorine dioxide to be a more effective disinfectant than chlorine in sewage effluent at pH 8.5. Chlorine dioxide was also found to be a more stable bactericide in relation to pH in the range studied.
