[Thermoregulatory effect of beta-adrenoreceptor block in the cold-adapted rat at rest and during exertion].

Inderal does not affect the thermoregulatory system in thermoneutral conditions. Blockade of beta-adrenoreceptors at 6 degrees C decreases the oxygen consumption in cold-acclimated rats and reduces it down to the level of control animals. Cold-acclimated rats have the same level of work hyperthermia at different ambient temperatures (26 degrees C, 6 degrees C) and under inderal injection. Control animals can only the same in warm environment.

Adaptation, Physiological

[Effect of adaptation to hypoxia on the working capacity and energy of skeletal muscles].

The authors studied the working capacity and heat formation of the skeletal muscles during contraction in rats--control and those adapted to hypoxia. The force of contraction, the work and fatigueability of the muscles, as well as elevation of the muscle temperature as a result of contraction were determined under conditions of indirect muscle electrostimulation. Hypoxia adaptation failed to influence the force of muscle contraction and the work performed. However, hypoxia led to reduction of the temperature effect of the muscle contraction per unit of the work performed. This pointed to increase of the efficiency of the muscle work in hypoxia adaptation. Fatigueability of the muscles in "hypoxic" rats was elevated. Changes in the energy of the muscle contraction in hypoxia and cold adaptation were different.

Adaptation, Physiological

[Work capacity of skeletal muscles and energetics of muscular work during adaptation to cold].

After the cold adaptation muscle contraction and the working capacity decreased. However, the muscles of the adapted to cold rats are able to save the initial power for a longer time. The muscular work of adapted to cold rats involves a greater expenditure of energy as compared with the control rats. Changes of the working capacity of skeletal muscles in control rats after noradrenalin administration are similar to those occurring in adapted to cold rats.

Adaptation, Physiological

[The effect of 5-hydroxytryptophan on shivering thermogenesis].

Studies carried out on ground squirrels showed active warming of these animals during arousal from hibernation to be closely connected with intensification of the shivering thermogenesis. The intraabdominal administration of 5-oxytryptophane, a precursor of serotonin clearly suppressed the shivering thermogenesis in arising ground squirrels and slowed down their warming.
